DIY Candles | Upcycled, Eco-Friendly, Easy

Hey guys! Here’s a tutorial on how to make these great upcycled candles! We love an eco-friendly craft!

Glitter (optional, but fun)

Pot (seriously, use one you don’t care about
Cookie cutter/metal measuring cup

What temp do you melt your wax at? I’ve seen videos where they burn it at 185 then add the fragrance then pour the wax. And do you add a lid to candles when they rest?

I don't control the temp on my wax, just heat it up until it's all melted. If you're worried about cracking, then I would use the coolest temp you can for the wax. A smaller thermal gradient is always better.

Can u mix crayons with the wax for different colours, where I'm from u can only find liquid food colouring thats why :( ? And also, i used a can opener, but the whole top came off, not only the inside thingy. Idk what I did wrong tbh.

The pigments used in crayons isn't the same as the kind you buy for candles; it isn't soluble in the wax, so it doesn't mix evenly and will eventually clog up the wick. Hmm...Maybe it's the style of the can opener? Mine has the blade on the inside of the can. But I imagine, if the blade is on the outside, it will cut the whole top off.

what temperature do you add the fragrance oil?

I don't use a thermometer. I just wait until all the wax is melted, remove it from the heat, and then mix in the fragrance. So the temp is just above the melting point of the wax, which is about 120F for the soy wax I'm using.

Can you use food dye with the candle wax or do you need special dye

Yes! As long as it's gel or paste food coloring. The liquid food colorings are water based and won't mix with the oils in the wax.

I only have one question, how did you wash the pot you hade the wax in? Did it all go away fast?

Ah yes, that's exceptionally tricky. The short answer is that I don't. The double boiler (the container actually holding the wax) is dedicated to candle making. However, while the wax is melted, you can wipe a significant amount of it out of the pan with something like a paper towel (carefully though, it's hot).

My guess is that a Gasoline(Bensine) based liquids may help. Ie degreaser, carb cleaner, brake cleaner, cerosine, whitespirit(not sure it named same in your country), zippo lighter fluud or bensin itself. They're work pretty well against mold-release waxes, and should work with basic wax as well.

Is the plastic lining of the can bad for your lungs if it burns?

None of these cans have plastic on the inside. I've tried to avoid cans with plastic labels on the outside; the can does get pretty warm and I was afraid that plastic would melt. I can't imagine it's great for you, but at least it's a pretty small amount of plastic.

if i wanted to make around 8 candles, how much wax would I need? I just wanna figure out if I should get 10lbs or 2lbs

It depends on the size, but I would try to find a 5lb bag. I used about 5 pounds to make 10 or so candles.

How many ounces of fragrance oil?

It will depend on what kind you use and how strong you want your candles. It should have instructions on the bottle if the fragrance oil is intended for candles. The kind I used was 1 oz oil/16 oz wax.

Every pour I've done end up with a hole in the wax after it's cooled completely. Not all but the majority. Anyone know why this is? Thanks

It's because the wax shrinks as it cools. Larger amounts of wax will mean that there is more likely hood for holes, but temperature is also a factor (i.e. if the wax cools very quickly, you're more likely to have holes - as I learned the hard way when I impatiently put my candles outside in the winter). There are a couple easy ways I deal with it: You can pour the wax in smaller batches at a time, allowing that amount to fully cool before adding more. Or you can add small amounts of hot wax over the top and holes after the majority of the candle has cooled - this is what I usually do because I'm lazy.
