This video demonstrates the best way to safely and easily remove the top of an aluminum beer or soda can without leaving any rough edges behind. Once the tops are removed they can be used for a variety of things like homemade candles, pencil and pen holders, and coin jars.

This is cool! When my dad passed he left me thousands of old beer cans he'd been collecting since before i was born, and I've had no idea what to do with them until now. Looks like I'ma start a "can"dle business

lol we use to do that when we were kids in Brooklyn. we would open the fire hydrant, and take a can and scrape both ends on sidewalk to turn the can into a cylinder and use it on the fire hydrant to increase the distance on the water coming out.

That's pretty awesome. I appreciate you sharing the story. We used to do something similar to create a potato/tennis ball gun. Kids can be resourceful when it comes to having a good time.

you can also use safety can openers to do so. I got a cutter made for cans, cuts them from the outside in a couple seconds.

Worked like a champ. If you want to keep the top, either punch through the top instead of bending the tab, then tape a thin piece of cardboard over the tab before you start sanding so the tab doesn’t get sanded/worn. Once the top is off, you can press the flap back into place and boom, the can looks like it was never opened.

Make sure you use the pliers or something to remove the lid after sanding, nearly lopped my finger off thinking "oh its gonna pop straight out really easily... no need to find them..." then it kinda sprang out as the pressure shifted and sliced the old pointer digit pretty severely! Excellent tutorial otherwise, well done! Side Q what would you edge the top and optionally bottom with? I was thinking car door edging trim? It's a Viking (Faxe) 1ltr beer can.

Awesome! Glad to know a technique that's not rough on my hands! Can this work for the bottom side as well or only the top?
@JScarper
@JScarper 2 жыл бұрын
it won't work on the bottom, unfortunately. the reason this works on the top is because at the factory, the top is actually a separate lid that's placed on top of the can, then the edges are folded over and crimped to seal it.

Does it have to be just aluminium cans, I was thinking of a Sakuma fruit drops tin to make a Canjo with.
@RedClayCandles
@RedClayCandles 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David. I thought I had responded to your question earlier but that appears to not be the case. I looked up a picture of a Sakuma fruit drop can and I do think my method would work although it would take longer since it isn't aluminum. I've also experimented with electric sanders with good results although you have to be careful to not apply too much pressure. Doing so can cause the cans to launch themselves off of the belt or sanding disk. If you have a Sakuma can you are willing to send me I could take a shot at removing the top for you. It would actually make for an interesting video. I would be happy to send the can back to you so you could turn it into a Canjo.
