As a cabinet maker (we bought contact cement in 55 gallon barrels) and a canoeist for 40 years I'll share a tip. Tape off your shape in the floor and then glue. Makes life a lot easier.

Sounds good! Lots of ways to do it and anyone with more experience than me will have some great insight I'm sure! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for a “refresher”! It’s been over a decade since I did this to my canoes. The cement has finally broken down enough to need to re-apply a couple of pads!

Great to hear! The glue is working perfectly now after months of backwoods trips!

How is it holding up by now? Thanks for the update. Was planning on doing this with my canoe but wanted to check in first. @@ruggedoutdoorsguide9904

Good job on the instructional. I've been using garden center knee pads with contact cement for more than 20 yrs. They are still going strong. At first I was shy about using something irreversible, and instead used outdoor double sided carpet tape. One was missing after the first car-top transport. Any heavy duty, waterproof contact cement will work. (Currently using Weldwood brand). Another tip is to clean the boat hull contact area with acetone after sanding to improve adhesion. (don't do this on the pad unless you test it first since it will dissolve some plastics) Some surfaces that are very porous (like leather) might require a second light coat of contact cement, but this should be a minimal problem here.

Really good video and I've been using a old pice of a yoga matt that is not glued to the canoe, and I forgot it a couple of times and of course the wind picked up and I drop to my knees and boy my knees were not happy at all. So I love your tip and it looks like a fun and cheap project. God bless and yes I will keep looking up. Cheers from Colorado.
