For a very long time egalitarians have bleated on and on about how poverty causes crime. Like most things they like to bleat on and on about, they're wrong that poverty causes crime. It is the opposite, crime causes poverty. People cut down or eliminate investments, savings becomes risky, communities don't plan for the future, etc etc. So every time I get a chance I bring up this topic to help right the world out of bad and backwards thinking. Peace

The only thing we ever had stolen off our boat was our spinaker pole, while docked in a very expensive neighborhood in the US. In over a year in the Bahamas, nothing stolen, despite poverty every where we went. It’s not economics, it morality and values. People either have them, or they don’t. Money has nothing to do with it.

When you first started that engine it more or less sounded like a dentist's drill sans the vibration in your mouth. Anyway that was excellent content and it's always good for people have other options such as an electric engine. You both have an excellent way to tell a story in a meaningful way. Keep the good content coming it's so fun to find out there's another video to watch. Anchors aweigh!

Locks, gates, etc are basically time delays, they just buy you time. Unfortunately there are many products and techniques that buy only very little time, so a consumer still has to do their research and not assume that whatever they are buying for security is actually good.

The Torqeedo is a good motor for someone going a mile or two to and from the boat. I have had one for about 10 years. I have two batteries and can take both if I want to go farther than 6 miles or so. I also have a backup one man power propulsion system (oars). In addition, you can charge the Torqeedo directly from solar - no charger needed. Torqeedo sells a charging cable that plugs into a standard 12V outlet. Charging that way is slower than using the charger. Of course, if you have an inverter you can plug the charger into the inverter. Just remember that the 530 watt-hr battery is the equivalent of a 40 amp-hr 12v battery. I keep mine in the lazarette of my boat where I installed a plug for charging. The motor does start every time and I have never gotten a bad batch of electrons. If you had it for the long run I would suggest getting a spare magnetic key. One issue I have noticed is that the motor will go into a fault mode and not run if you go from reverse to forward or vice versa too fast. If you go from forward to stop, wait a second then go to reverse you will have no problems. If it does go into fault mode and won't run, just turn it off and then on again to reset it. I am very pleased with mine although since I built a hard dinghy I don't use it much because I enjoy rowing and my hard dinghy rows like a dream. Here is a link to a tongue in cheek video I made about my Torqeedo last summer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2HVYmSNmN2Lhbs

Sorry for the loss! I bought an expensive device that slides of the outboard adjustment screws and has the lock inside the steel U channel. Keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist for someone trying to sell the stolen motor, and check nearby pawn shops and used marine parts stores. Sorry about your outboard; but I’m really excited about the electric motor! I am really looking forward to your next few videos. I have a little 12ft inflatable boat with motor mount that I use to take my family around rivers in Northern California and want to get an electric motor. I don’t like all the maintenance and mess that goes into gas motors; and I don’t care about speed. I do care a lot about reliability and long run time though.

To increase range of a torqeedo you, can you pair it with a flexible or folding solar panel that would charge the battery while you are diving/spearfishing/surfing/Jettywalking? Also can you pair it with a bigger battery or larger battery giving you a bigger gas tank and yet another reason for a small generator/power source for Air Conditioning (mold reducer).

I had to get new insurance on my boat for going to the Bahamas. The new insurance company required an inspection. One of the useful things the inspector mentioned was a GPS theft tracker. I now have one on the boat (a TRAK-4). If you only have it report its position once a day, they claim its battery will last a year. Now you've got me thinking that I should get one for the dinghy, another to hide inside the cover of the dinghy motor, one for inside the pelican case with my cameras, and anything else that looks stealable. Maybe equip some of your stuff with these as well. If there was one hidden inside your outboard cover, cops would have the thief and you would have your motor back.

That did not look like the 10T model, which is equivalent to the 20hp model, and you can put a external battery in the dinghy.

We've had three outboards stolen in 30 years of boating. Nothing makes me angrier. The second one was lifted over a six foot locked fence from the dockside.

Can I suggest 1 thing, get some really long pair of oars. You'd be surprised as to how fast they can make you go with very little effort. Changed my life.

Florida is crazy with boat thefts! I agree that an electric engine is not for me for the same reasons that you talked about. How will it work with 2 or more people aboard with a bunch of gear fighting a 15 knot headwind and sea for a few miles?? Nevermind the charging part. I want power and the ability to plane my boat. Nice timing though as a temporary fix.
