In this video, I show you how to make your own soap mold using a recycled cardboard box!
It’s easier than building a mold out of wood, cheaper than buying a wood or silicone mold online, and much faster than both.
This is the best option for an affordable soap mold, especially if you need a soap mold right away for a special project. You might not even have to buy anything if you already have the supplies on hand!
SUPPLIES LIST:
• Sturdy cardboard box (mine is 9.5" x 9.5")
• Extra pieces of cardboard
• Box knife
• Tape
• Ruler - amzn.to/2ZPt3Lo 💗
• Freezer paper (I use the 18" wide, but the 15" wide is cheaper)
15" Freezer Paper - amzn.to/36hWt76 💗
• Cutting mat
(Mine's a quilting one, but you can use a cutting board to save $)
• Scissors (helpful)
For your box, you can use any sturdy box that has the dimensions you are looking for. You can use boxes from your local grocery store or even used shipping boxes from an online order.
I also show you how to line your soap mold using freezer paper so it won’t leak. If you don’t want to use freezer paper, a clean trash can liner will work.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you don't want the hassle of trying make and line your own soap mold, here's an inexpensive silicone mold. I have a couple of these that I use for my goat milk soap and I LOVE them! One of these molds will give you 10, 1-inch bars.
CHEAP SILICONE SOAP MOLD: amzn.to/2tqSmqI 💗
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lining the soap mold starts at: 3:23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to calculate the amount of soap your mold will hold:
1) Find out how many cubic inches your mold is by multiplying the length x width x how high your soap will be in the mold.
2) Multiply your cubic inches by .554113 and that will give you the fluid ounces to adjust your recipe to. (Just make sure to double check it for the correct amount of lye before you start making soap!)
Example:
My mold is 9.5” x 9.5” and I want my soap to be 2” tall. (9.5 x 9.5 x 2 = 180.05 square inches)(Take 180.05 x .554113 = 100.02 fluid ounces) The total volume of your recipe would be 100.02 fluid ounces.

That’s the best freezer paper fold I’ve ever seen. It was slow when slow was needed and fast when fast was needed. I just got a great box and I have anxiety just thinking about folding the freezer paper in it. I usually get frustrated and end up with wrinkles in my soap. But you made it simpler for me to follow. Thanks ever so much. I’d love to get one of those fancy wooden boxes but funds are low. This will be great for me. I wish I could give you more likes. lol 😆 🥰

I'm so glad you found it helpful! It does take a little practice and the tightly curled end of the paper roll can be a pain, but it's totally worth it to have nice smooth soap. More likes... haha! You are the best! :)

This was the smartest paper lining video I've seen yet, to not press the second inner corner fold until your liner is in place and you're sure of the fit. So simple, yet brilliant! Thank you so much--truly helpful!

This would be a great idea to try making a large silicone tray template cast with multiple custom cavities instead of singles. Wooden trays are too expensive, and lord knows I've got plenty of cardboard boxes lying around... Thank you!

@SoapAuthority
@SoapAuthority 3 жыл бұрын
I haven personally tried it myself, but it might work. If you wanted to experiment, the two issues you might have is leaking and/ or the paper sticking to the sides of the soap. As long as you are prepared to deal with those issues, you could try it with a small batch.

What if you need 2 sheets of freezer paper? My box is a bit bigger?
@SoapAuthority
@SoapAuthority 3 ай бұрын
Great question! You could tape the freezer paper together on the backside with some overlap. As long as you don't pour your soap too thin, it should be OK with little to no leakage. Maybe put an old towel underneath to make sure nothing gets on the counter top or table.

Nice video. Would you happen to have an easy cheaper method of cutting soap?
@SoapAuthority
@SoapAuthority 4 жыл бұрын
The cheapest way I have found to cut even bars of soap that isn't a total pain is using a $20 cheese slicer. It's the kind with the swinging arm that's attached to either a wood or marble base. I put a piece of tape on one side and used a marker to draw a line at the one inch mark so my bars are consistent. Any cheaper than that and it gets a lot harder.

@@TheRealZeeNkosi If you use baking paper, it might leak through and will probably stick to the soap and be harder to get off. You may end up having to cut it off of the soap.

It's possible the soap would stick to it or leak, so if you are prepared for those two possibilities you could try it with a small inexpensive batch of soap to see how well it holds up.

@SoapAuthority
@SoapAuthority 4 жыл бұрын
Ythrip Atia I haven't used it, so I don't know if it would peel off the soap or stick bad. Another thing is, it might leak a little if it's not thick enough. I would try it with a small batch with extra towels under it in case it leaks, and be prepared to cut the edges off the finished soap loaf if the paper sticks. You won't waste a batch of soap, and you might find a great alternative way to line your soap mold!

I made mine but am afraid of the soap refusing to come out or the solution to be too hot
@SoapAuthority
@SoapAuthority 4 жыл бұрын
Matina Jazmine As long as you line your cardboard mold properly with the freezer paper you’ll be fine. Shiny side up (that’s the side that touches the soap). The freezer paper will peel off after 18-24 hours. It will even hold up if you hot process you’re soap. Worst case scenario is having to trim the paper off with a knife, but that’s unlikely. My hot process soap is about 180 degrees Fahrenheit when I put it in the mold and the freezer paper does fine with it that hot.
