I used to have cats and dogs. Of course the dogs wanted to not only eat the cats food, but also eat their poop. Someone down the street was remodeling their kitchen , so I salvaged a 3-door base cabinet. I pushed the base cabinet up against a wall, that butted up against a wall in my laundry room. I bought a "cat" door at the pet store. What made it a "cat" door was that it had a magnetic latch on the lower part of the door, activated by a mouse shaped magnet that went on the cats collars like a rabies or name tag. Only the cats, (with the magnets on their collars) could activate the latch on the door. I jigsawed out the panels on the base cabinet doors and stapled screen over the openings. I kept their food at one end, and their litter box at the other end. Cleaning the litter box and feeding them happened from the garage side. I left my garage door open most of the time I was at home except after dark and in the winter. The cats spent most of their time in their "veranda" enjoying being outside. It was a great solution to not have the mess and smell of the litter box inside my house. When the house was sold, the buyers had 2 cats and thought the system was ingenious. I left the magnets for their cat"s collars because I had to buy a new cat door for my next house.

They make the motion activated puck lights, but really just a nightlight in the hallway would be way more than enough. Cats see by movement, and are not as dependent on light, like the inferior (all of us!) boom and. Kitty will be fine if he knows the way, and they have done an excellent job of reinforcing that. Kudos!!

I have done this for years. Had a pantry cabinet made with a hole on the side for the cat to enter the bottom of the cabinet to access the litter box. When I was renting apartments. When I bought my own home I cut a door hole into the basement door, put a rubber flap on it and the cat went down there to use the litter box. Personally, I would not have made a transparent cat door. No one wants or needs to watch the cat go potty. It's fancy but not necessary when you could have just cut a little kitty door at the bottom of the existing doors. Plus cats like enclosed cubby holes. Your workmanship was great though.

Whisperwoman - when cats defecate/urinate they are at their most vulnerable and prefer to do it where they can easily see what’s going on around them. Please don’t quote me any anecdotal evidence, which pales in comparison to the findings of cat therapists. My cat was having behavioural problems, and refused to pee and poop in her closed litter box, and once I changed her litter box to an open one, everything changed for the better. I was willing to learn from cat behaviourists. Playing and hanging out in boxes and paper bags cannot be compared to the time they spend in their litter boxes.

Could possibly work for one cat. But if you find that they’re marking, your cat isn’t liking the hideaway litter box.. some cats will tolerate. Others do not like to set up. Cats don’t need privacy. Cats actually do not need privacy, but if you have more than one cat you should have 2-3 boxes. Litter boxes do best out in the open with no lid

Could I perhaps pay you to make me one of these doors and mail it to me?

Wow, this is a really clever idea!!!! This is how our cats were when we made a kitty door to the back porch, lol. This is so sweet!!!

I love this! My boujie cat has to have 2 litter boxes or she wont use either lol this is something I need to look into! I was thinking of getting a small cabinet or sideboard and cutting a hole in the side but I love what you have done here! And your wife's (assuming) laugh is great btw!

The water should be on the outside of door...bc litter can get in it, cats wont drink water that smells like poop 🤷🏽♀️

Gus is such a cute kitty. Also, I liked how you did a test run with the door on the left, then installed it with the door on the right :P I thought he was going to get so lost!

I usually ignore yt recommendations but this I had to see, it did not disappoint. And to see how patient and caring he was to his cat was a bonus ♥

I took a opening under a set of stairs where the door was in the garage to allow storage and cut in a kitty flap door from inside the house to the storage area. I mounted a motion detector LED light and mounted a bath exhaust fan in there as well. When kitty went in, the motion would turn on the light and fan for 5 min. Fan took the Smell out if the closet and into the garage. No smelly house and one happy kitty. Lol

Nice build! I would use some of the space over the litter box for extra storage, like cat litter and such.

But why use acrylic? I'd rather use a solid piece of wood. It's easier and I don't have to look at the litter box

A flap instead of a door with fan extraction would have been better. Charcoal absorb odor btw

I would just mount a piece of glass to the back of a cabinet with the center cut out. Much more durable and easier. Thank you for the great ideas.

Kind of makes me wish I had a better place for our cat litter box. Right now one is in the shower (or just outside it) and the other one upstairs is in a hallway. Luckily there's no smell! Only when he has just done a number two it's gross. We feed him wet food thrice a day so yeah, the scent of it is not nice.
