Watched this video months ago & gave it a well-earned thumbs-up back then. Stumbled onto it today & was reaching for the thumbs-up, only to see I'd already done so before - guess I forgot I'd already seen it. That's a testament to its value. What a beautiful build - solid & pure quality. Well done!

Charlie is too cute! Don't be surprised if he starts needing a friend. As our little guy got older he needed another cat even though he had been neutered. That was 15 years and a bunch of friends ago. He's thinking now to be careful what ya wish for. He was our first rescue and none of the others have been alone. Kittens are very entertaining and even entertain each other.

We bought a nice cat tree. When our guys got to adult size it started to wobble, took it apart and the posts were hollow flimsy plastic under the rope and carpet. It wasn't PVC , it was some hollow thin plastic tubes with threaded holes for the bolts that warped easily. I want to make my own. This is a great video thank you.

Wonderful project. I made a homemade tall cat tree by taking an old wicker table that I had that was not too pretty anymore for the living room and attached a short and cheap cat tree to it. For extra stability since the wicker is so light and the cat tree can tend to be heavy, I got a decorative fabric cubby to put on the bottom shelf of the wicker table and put large heavy beach rocks at the bottom and her toys and sunrises on top. And in the bottom cubby in the cat tree that she never really used cuz it’s so tiny (and she doesn’t like those kinds of tight spaces anyway) I filled a burlap bag with heavy rocks and that puppy don’t move now. I put it in front of her favorite window and next to a homemade climbing/nap wall I made from an old twin mattress I was going to toss. I just covered the mattress with a nice grippy upholstery fabric. And since the climbing wall is in the hallway I don’t even need to attach it to the wall if she topples it over cuz it is still easy for her to cling to as it falls to hit the opposing wall and then she has plenty of ways to hop down either to her cat tree or a living room arm chair right by the hallway entrance. Or she cries for me to push it back in place as she rides it back in place. Those two pieces get the most use compared to any other cat furniture I’ve purchased. Except for the perfect cat scratching post I found at a feed store. It’s super tall and has the heavy wide base. It comes with me anytime we travel cuz it takes up little space. I put it in the car last and nudge it between the luggage and the base against the rear seat door behind the driver so no windows get blocked. Thanks for inspiring me with your kitty condo build. I’m sure your baby will love it for years to come

Other than my holding my breath every time I saw you drilling near your bare feet, you did a wonderful job. Another woodworking tip: When using glue for any wood project, don’t just lay down lines of it. You want to spread it like you would with paint. You can use a brush or anything that will allow you to spread it on the surface. The other materials will hold better, dry smoother and be less subject to shifting with change in humidity and house temperature. Also, periodically check that your staples are still in place because wood swells and contracts with changes in humidity which can cause the staples to loosen over time. Trust me when I tell you that you don’t want your kitty to get hold of a loose staple to play with and possibly get it stuck in their mouth or paw.

Whats the name of that yoga position you used while carpeting ? Carpet Spouse? Great narration...Beautifully done! I'm going to copy a lot of your techniques. I'm replacing a "bought" tree and after doing two re-carpets on them my cats are getting a new loft! I will be assembling with the idea of how to disassemble to re-carpet when the time comes. If these goes as smoothly as you show in the video, instead of new carpet, I may rebuild. Amazon has velco sealed carpet pieces that work well for round posts.
@shesmakingsomething5 ай бұрын
That position is called "Hide the Toes from the Drill" :) I have to recarpet this tree as well because he loves to use the sides of the box as a scratching post and has ripped a few holes in it. I suggest not using glue when you add the carpet, only staples, to make replacing the carpet easier for you.

Did you ever attach the teaser toy? I am constructing my own after watching this for inspo and I’m not sure how best to go about it. I thought about doing a small 1/2 pilot hole, feeding some of the sting in and then got glueing but it doesn’t feel like that’s strong enough
@shesmakingsomething Жыл бұрын
I did not end up attaching a toy, but my original plan was to screw in a bracket on the underside of the platform and either tie or glue toys onto that so I can easily replace it when it gets worn out and used up. Since I did not do that though, I cannot speak to how well that plan would have worked.

2:26 You're binding your blade, that's why it's harder at the end of the cut. Instead of cutting between your supports, cut to the side of them.
@MohawkMangopit Жыл бұрын
I was debating commenting about this technique also. It's been known to cause kick back so it can be VERY dangerous. It's happened to me a few times in my life and realize there is NO way to react in time. Great cat tree!!! But please consider - pinching a saw blade is very risky. On small pieces, support one side & let the other fall.

How did you decide the design? I have misc cat tower parts because I took 2 apart, recovered it with crushed velvet and shaggy fabric to match my couch, but now am stuck on how I should put it all together to make 1 big tower. Did you use a CAD program to test different ideas or just sketched it out? It looks great.
@shesmakingsomething Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for watching! I did not use any program, I just sketched it out. I looked at some cat trees on the internet and took my favorite bits from those and sketched out some designs before settling on a final idea. I did recognize a few balance issues as I was putting it together and adjusted the placement of the poles by eye, so a program probably could have helped with that.
