Yeah, we had a lot of used materials, leftover screws, leftover hardware cloth, and got quite a bit in the cull bin at Home Depot for 70% off. Without that, probably would have been close to twice that. I described more of how we built it cheaply in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3mQiXyDms56r5o

wow, really nice job on a lovely coop! Lots of great features. I think maybe the chicks' legs are too short to manage the rungs yet on the ladder. Maybe once full grown they'll manage that stride. I also wonder if they'd prefer a flat (no air spaces) plank, with foot rungs spaced at a 'chicken stride' distances. Best of luck!

Could you possibly do a short video about the original chicken door? I didn't understand how the hinged piece works. Otherwise, beautiful coop. 😁🐤🐤🐥🐣
@anonanon7278
@anonanon7278 Жыл бұрын
Some hinges don't fully fold back on themselves, so they have an arc of motion that is between 180 and 270 degrees, as opposed to 360 degrees. By surface mounting the hinge so the free bracket can move between the 180º and 270º positions, and putting a wooden stop above the hinge, the coop door can only be open when the hinge is at 180 degrees, so you need to pull the wire to make the hinge flap flush with the door/wall so it can pass under/behind the stopper. If the hinge is at more than 180-190 degrees, it will hit the stopper. Hopefully that makes sense.

Excellent construction skills! The coop looks great. I also copied Carolina Coops build concepts. My regret is I didn't make my coop and run 6 ft. wide, but I also have a 20x20 pen area I'm able to let them out in so it works out, but that was definitely an after thought as I realized a 4x10 run really wasn't going to be big enough for 4 hens. Well, it would be, but I don't think their quality of life would have been as good. I may have missed it in your video, but did you add a predator apron? I did, but it's been completely unnecessary. I kept thinking the chickens would be under regular assault by animals but there hasn't been a single instance in two years. Better safe than sorry though. Again, excellent build!

I was looking to do something very similar but I have a Question so I’m hoping you can shed some light. I see you have positioned your 2x4s on end for the perimeter of the structure. How did you secure the 2x4s to each other? Did you use a jig to do diagonal screws or what? Very cool design.. you are awesome
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Kiely it would be best to use a “pocket screw” jig to do diagonal screws like you mentioned. But I didn’t have the jig. So here is what I did: I would drill about a 1/4 inch hole 2/3s of the way thru the board, then use a really long screw driver bit to put the screw into that hole and into the next board. Does that make sense? I’ll be making a video if explaining some of this in more detail soon. Thank you for the positive comments!
@sebastiankiely4534
@sebastiankiely4534 4 жыл бұрын
The Quarter Acre Homestead yeah that makes complete sense. We have a jig and I do see this is how Carolina does theirs but I was debating doing a normal wall frame (2x4) on its side for the base and using 2x 2x4s for the structural supports. Do you see any reason other than aesthetics to do it the “Carolina” way? It looks great.. but i feel it might lack the strength of a conventional wall
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
@@sebastiankiely4534 I can think of two reasons the "Carolina" way might be better. One, it is more surface area for attaching the hardware cloth. Two, by putting the siding inside the framing, the 2x4 looks like trim work when you paint it. Really convenient.
@faltio69

Did you use treated wood?
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, we used treated for the boards that touch the ground, regular lumber for everything else.

How do you keep predators from digging in from under?
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
You can add a "predator apron" which is just wire stapled to the bottom of the walls and going outward horizontally on the ground.

Great looking coop and run. What areas of the build did you use spruce vs treated wood. I cannot decide if I want to do all treated or just treated at the bottom where it touches the dirt. Also what was your material cost. Once again, it is a very nice chicken coop and run!!
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
I only used treated for the boards that touch the ground. Material cost was about $450, but I had hardware cloth already and I got a lot of stuff from the discount bin at Home Depot (roofing, plywood, 2xs). Got mis-tint paint for $5 a gallon. I also used some old 2x6s I had laying around. So if I had to buy everything at regular price it would probably be closer to $800 or so.

Man, it is beautiful by the way what was the total foot print of yours? 6X12 or 6x18?
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
Mike Young thank you. It is 6x16. Kind of a weird size, but I started out thinking 6 foot sections, and then realized I had two 10 foot pressure treated boards, so 10 plus 6 made 16.

So we are building your coop and some of the measurements are wrong the door for the nest box is mismeasured....its not right.. We have had to do alot of altering because the measurements aren't right in multiple places ...also this is not an easy build, there was no way to get used materials, so I bought all new..I've spent atleast 800 just on the coop alone!! This is a very big project and very expensive building too!
