My dad grew up during the 40's and they always had chickens, ducks, rabbits and pigeons in the back yard. In the 70's we were watching Foghorn leg horn and he decided I needed to experience raising chickens. He made a simple pen like yours but he just used old window screens or storm windows with chicken wire, took five of them and nailed them together with the ends being one half of a window frame, one being hinged. He put a rubber tarp or something on top, an open wooden keg with straw and the two hens laid in there. Simple, cheap and fast with no lumber work.

Very cool! I like the idea of having two to rotate around for your meat runs- a little easier to move, some redundancy, and easy to keep consistent production without mixing bird ages

Jason, can I offer a suggestion? I was thinking about this watching Justin Rhodes too and I wondered if maybe you guys put a small hook on the top you could have a place to keep the rope up of the ground. That would save you from bending down to grab the rope and also keep it out of the mud or from getting frozen in ice in the winter, too. 😊 Have a great day! ❤️

I don’t know why you have any dislikes. Great video brother, you truly are an inspiration. I’m actually in the process of moving to Trade Tennessee (North Easternmost part) and am planning to do just as you. I have a 31.4 acre lot but it’s mostly hill (former beef land) , so I’ll have to overcome that obstacle. Thanks. We added a handle to the lid, and chain so the lid doesn't fall all the way back and rip the hinges off. We put a kick stand board on the lid. When it's open, we unhook the chain, and the kick stand comes down to support the lid.

Having the lid flip over for shade is genius! For ease, someone could have two 2x4 boards ripped down the middle (Like you did for the frame) to put on the ground to prop up the lid for more stability or have two legs fashioned/ secured on the lid so they flip off and stand themselves when the lid is opened with a hinge or something (?) That doesn't make sense, does it? lol. It makes sense in my head though lol!! Thank you for the plans!

FYI you should run those 3” screws flush to just set into the wood the deeper you drive it the less wood there is on the head for strength and it will pull apart easier

Nice build, with reasonable a price for someone starting a few chickens in the backyard. I know it’s meant for meat birds, but it could be used to grow out a few egg layers.

Maybe put a 2x2 on each end running across the structure and over hanging hinge side a foot or two to support the top shade door and take the strain off the hinges when open. (wind/gravity)

Man, I get a little jealous of your tools! I might be a girl but I still love to build some stuff. Love the tractor it looks really good. The only thing I think I would do differently is put a bit of a pitch on the roof to keep it from holding water. Even then, it's not really that big of an area so it can't hold too much water after a storm. Other than that it looks lightweight but sturdy enough to keep the critters out. Great idea.

Hello Jason! I have a question for you: why don't you put anything in the bottom/base/flor of the tractor? Here in Europe there are a lot of hens predators (foxes for example) and they are able to lift or dig and go inside to kill our birds during the night. Maybe a net could help from this point of view, even if you should have more problems to move the tractor with the animals and let them eat from the ground. So I would like what do you think about it. Thanks!!!
