Hey man! Watched this video about a month ago. Wifey wanted a small patio in the front yard for some lawn chairs are a small table. Small 10'x10' but had zero clue what to do. This was the only video i watched and got to work. Perfectly level with the concrete it butted up to, perfect grade, lines etc. Im so happy with the end result. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, much appreciated!!

About 20 years ago, at my first house, I decided to make a simple 10ft x 10ft patio with square 12in x 12 in pavers. I thought it would take 2 days and it took almost a week. Way more work than anticipated especially since it was a town house and I didn't know what to do with the dirt I excavated. I had to put it in the back of my SUV and transport it off site. Then I dug it too deep and used railroad ties along the edges. It turned out to be a step down patio. I found out that I didn't drain it properly. Anyway, this was before youtube and it was one of my first projects. I am going to attempt another patio on my single family home I now own and it helps to have videos like this. I liked how you used the conduit to gauge the depth. I am going to use that process when I lay the sand down. If it's one thing I learned owning my house and doing projects myself is that it's always more work than anticipated, and something always comes up that wasn't planned. You have to be able to adjust your plans on the fly.

Once I found out how cheap concrete pavers are I went to town. Built a 8x5 landing behind my garage, tearing my 10x10 deck down to build a 15x15 concrete paver patio now, a new deck was going to be $6,500. I’ll be into the entire patio for $ 1,500. Concrete is the way to go for a more natural look.

Hey could you explain a little more about the slope for drainage? Like as far as if I’m working from the wall of the house out ( away from it) does that mean i dig deeper to get the slope? I’m in the process of doing this myself but I want to be sure I’m doing the right thing also.
@AndrewThronImprovements2 жыл бұрын
👋 so you just want to make sure that the grade is higher on the “house side”. So that any water that hits the pavers will drain away from the house. The slope doesn’t need to be major! Thanks for watching and hope your patio turns out great 👍

@JVHorvath12 жыл бұрын
should of put a weather strip along that fence line. all that is gonna happen is that little to non-existent gap between the paver and the wood is going to get soil compaction, water, and humidity which is just going to rot out that wood even quicker (treated or not). just food for thought.

What if a person doesn’t have a wet saw or angle grinder? Can it be chiseled in someway?

It's so much simpler with a wet saw, however, you could use a chisel and hammer. I've seen a few videos where people chisel. Even sped up it looks like it takes a while and error could be common.

I want to do this with 24” x 24” concrete pavers but I want to leave 3-4 inch gaps between for St. Augustine grass. Can I put top soil and sod in the gaps, or will it not grow on top of the sand and gravel base?
@AndrewThronImprovements3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I BELIEVE that grass should grow in the top soil. However, I am not positive. You raise a good question though. I have seen grass between pavers many, many times. I am now, like you, wondering what they did for the sub-base. I assume it's just rock, sand, and topsoil, but now you have me wondering. Thanks for watching!

Doing a very similar project, got it all dug out and pavers arriving (a few pavers already installed by the back door by the developer). Once i've put the hardcore down and whacker plated it, can you just use sharp sand? All the other videos seem to suggest 5:1 sand and concrete mix. Hoping to get away with just sand as a lot less hassle and mess.

Hi! Why did you use that recycled concrete gravel? Could you use whatever soil/sand that was already there?
@AndrewThronImprovements2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stacy - The gravel base serves two purposes. 1. It is more durable and compatible that the native soil, which helps to prevent settling. 2. The stone helps with drainage. Generally you want to use stone and sand for a more "professional" result - but plenty of people just put pavers down on "whatever soil/sand was already there". Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

If your not gonna use screed rails, for DIY i wouldnt recommend it, as it may just end up taking longer. But screed it all out with a 4-6 foot level and free hand screed it in both directions all at once then pick somewhere to start and take off from. Leveling 1 at a time is the worst thing u can do Also hit up your local landscape supply store for some real paver options. Stop buying from Home Depot lol
