How to build a DIY gfrc concrete table with a tree growing through the middle and removable planters. Check out squarespace.com/jonnybuilds to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code JONNYBUILDS.
My friend owns a local brewery in Oklahoma City (www.livelybeerworks.com/) and he asked me to make a table to be the centerpiece of the taproom. I made this glass fiber reinforced concrete table with a tree growing up through a hole in the middle framed with two removable steel planters that slot into the table top. This concrete tree table matches the plant theme of the taproom, and falls in line with my love of combining plant life and furniture.

Nice. I'm glad you didn't mess around with making a smoother mix for the first coat. That extra step makes it look less like concrete.

I need a table like this. Though adding stones at the bottom of a planter can actually cause root rot problems, not prevent it.
@thatryguy5474
@thatryguy5474 4 жыл бұрын
When customers bring in their rotting plants, there is always rocks at the bottom. I think it reason is mostly psychological, people think with the rocks at the bottom the water has somewhere to go, but it doesn’t. It’s still in the pot and people often water it like a pot that has drainage.
@thatryguy5474
@thatryguy5474 4 жыл бұрын
As well as other reasons like the soil acts like a sponge and hold onto the water before letting it drain through. Causing the wet soil at the bottom it be raised higher in the pot. Which more roots will be in wet soil and cause them to rot. Most houseplants like the soil to somewhat dry out.

Love the design but i thing the pot made in plywood is not a good idea for two reason : - in the long run humidity from the plant and the soil will spoil the plywood, more so since people who will want to replicate it probably count on putting it in the outside environment - the color and the material doesn't really go with the rest of the table (mostly concrete and metal, the plywood give a really amateur look beside the rest of the table looking pro) if i were you i would either made one with the same concrete as the table or the metal use for the legs if i wanted to go for a industrial design kind of look or a terracotta pot that i would put in a real wood pot-cache if i wanted a more brut design which would be of a color that would depend of the color of the concrete i made (here a more light brown tone for example but at least more dark than the plant itself)
@JonnyBuilds
@JonnyBuilds 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. There are two layers of moisture barrier inside the plywood planter plus the tree remained in its plastic planter. It should be fine.

Wondering why you used the hp50 instead of the proprietary mix besides price. I'm looking to make a firepit table top and wondering if the hp50 would be sufficient.

I have learned much from your KZbin.,,. Have one question,,.,. I have a 2” slap of pine that I varnished some years ago, and use for a kitchen table.,. I’m going to inlay some leaves and birds with resin,,. It seems much easier to create pattern and only go part way thru slab? Will I get a lot “nicer” finished project if the pattern shows transparency by having patterned inlay go completely thru slab?? Thank you FRED
@JonnyBuilds
@JonnyBuilds 4 жыл бұрын
I would only inlay about a 1/4” deep and use a pigmented resin.

So I assumed you would want water to drain from the planter, but you sealed it so no water would drain? Just curious for some insight on this.
@JonnyBuilds
@JonnyBuilds 4 жыл бұрын
That’s what the layer of gravel is for. The water drains into the gravel layer, evaporates over time, and is reabsorbed into the soil as it dries.
