The author does like to from scratch, kzbin.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.

It is a very good book for beginners as well as for those that are already into kzbin.infoUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt A very good basic ebook to keep as a reference too. I like it and the way the subject matter is presented. It has humor and that helps with the reading.

Stand up. I’m a 30 year master cabinet and furniture maker. Retired now and have a small shop. But if I had opportunity to own a cnc, you darn right I would. your electrician is verry bad at it if he tells you that you don't have 3 phases Y because Y or delta is just a way to use wire with 3 phases. it's just the diffference in tension between 2 phases or between a phase and the neutral.

BOWTIES 👍 When done well, it comes down to using the proper size, grain, color, wood species if the goal is to blend it in and not stand out, and if done for contrast the wood color (species) of the Bowtie should complement the the species it goes into. I hate it 👎 when Bowties becomes a distraction drawing attention away from the main piece leaving you with the thought "what were they thinking that's not creative it terrible" I know I over explained it but they really can make or break a piece. I saw some pics on Pinterest where some have used metal Bowties and some other shapes that were interesting, it worth a look.

There were two way you could have still used the off cut as the top of the monitor stand. You could have filled the messed up rout with epoxy or other wood and recut it. Or you could have milled it down to 1/4" or less and used it as a veneer on the top. It still looks good with those other boards but it isn't quite as nice as it would have been. As far as bow ties go I don't mind them as long as they are not over used. Since that is an epoxy table I would have only used one bow tie on the larger cracks then filled the gap with epoxy so the whole top is solid and free of voids.

If you're using that jig to cut the bowtie inlays, you can always cut the bowtie with the CNC and have it round the corners to match the router bit. It'll avoid the extra chisel work to clean up the corners.

I don't comment on many videos, because I feel like my comment would be irrelevant. As I type this, there are already 477 comments. Will Johnny Builds read 478 comments??? And if he's getting 10 new comments a day on... say... 150 videos on his channel, will he really read 1500 videos a day??? I seriously doubt it... Anyway, Johnny Builds asked, "Do you feel that I use and depend on my larger tools (CNC) too much?" My answer - I don't know. I'm not a Johnny Builds fan nor a subscriber. I do however search KZbin for projects that interest me, and to give me ideas for my own personal projects. I do not have a CNC (or Festool). When I'm watching a "how to" video, and a CNC, Festool, 3D printer or another tool is used that I don't have.... Then why should I continue watching? The video renders itself useless to me. It becomes time to stop watching and search for another video that uses the tools that I have - and can follow along, while making my project. I have a complete woodshop, minus a CNC, Festool, 3D printer and a jointer. I've learned how to square-up my stock with my table saw and planer. I can follow videos that use a jointer - but I cannot follow videos that flatten a large slab and make custom router cuts without a CNC, and although a Festool isn't necessary (it only helps with alignment), is still intimidating to watch a how-to video when I cannot completely follow along.... In short, it's mainly the big CNC videos where I lose interest... Not many of us have a big CNC (or a small one), and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way... I don't know if you depend on your large tools too much, but when you do, you lose me - and probably others... Thanks!

Could you have ripped the pupleheart to the desired width, cut your stitches to the desired length, then rounded the edges on the sander? Hey, the way I see using a CNC Machine in your shop is like 75 - 100 years ago, they didn’t use table saw like we have. They didn’t use Drill Presses like we have. They didn’t use Routers, portable or table routers, like we have today. It’s just another piece of equipment to make the most out of your shop. I forgot to mention the Orbital Sanders… all to make the job easier.

I suppose contextually the bowties would be depending on what you are doing. If you trying to hold to pieces together partially over a huge gap, no. If you are doing it over a small area, sure. I'm kinda in the middle on the subject. So 👍/ 👎. Anyone who says you aren't a woodworker because you use high end equipment can jump off a cliff. How do they think we get mass produced furniture? CNCs are used for that. Still though, amazing work!

I think cnc's are a double edged sword. On one hand, I think you can become _too reliant_ on them... If you're heavily using cnc on _almost all your builds_ you become more of "wood programmer/designer" than a _woodworker._ But on the other hand, having _the ability_ to incorporate cnc into your process makes you a much more _versatile_ woodworker. Also purchasing _your own_ cnc is such a big commitment in $ and shop space; if _you don't_ get a lot use out of the cnc then you wouldn't be able to _justify_ the $ spent and large section of the shop taken up! All in all I think like most things in life, it's about striking a good balance 💯

Handtools or powertools/cnc, no matter what tools you use, you cannot make a great project without the needed skills. When using natural materials, like wood, I prefer the perfect imperfect (unique) project over a "perfect" project, where you can make 100 totally identical projects, and those projects should be cheap, no matter the materials used! Nature is the master of creativity, art, and so much more, that allows different species to live under extremely cold, hot, dry, wet, dark, or light conditions, and each of them often has often has more than one purpose. And never has nature produced 2 identical projects of the billions of different plants, animals, etc. And about the straight lines, we humans often care a lot about: Did you know there are NO straight lines in nature? As long as we don't harm anyone, short or long term, like child labor, slavery or toxic materials, etc. that harms people or our environment, it's nothing by different methods, and as long the maker is honest about how it's made. These changes everything. But wheater we prefer projects made by hand tools or power tools, it's just a personal choice, and it should be all about the end result! Not the process to get there. It's also a no go if the maker lies about the tools used when asked. A beautiful project requires skills! And don't think some skills are better than others. They are just different. It's the end result that counts! Fx. A project where you can see a woodworker has hand carved 100 almost identical flowers on a project, it to me a lot more worth, than if he/she has made one flower on a computer and made a cnc carve out all 100 identical flowers. Because the end result is visibly different!! Not because one is "real woodworking" and the other not. Some people are willing to pay a more for a "perfect" project made by powertools/cnc, and others to pay more for a hand carved project. Because we prefer a different end result. All this is just my personal opinion. You might have other opinions. As long as we can agree on the harming part, it's totally fine to disagree. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜❤

I think of the CNC kind of like this... The CNC is to woodworking as McDonalds is to a gourmet meal. It gets the job done, but sometimes I want to do the work instead of programing a computer to do it for me. You must understand that I was around way before home computers were a thing...so I'm saying I'm old and don't want to change my ways. (I've never owned a cell phone). I watch KZbin woodworking shows, but that's the limit of my ability. I enjoy your videos and think you do a good job.

Like or dislike bow ties. I like bow ties for functionality not for elegance. They appear to have a real function for strength and stability. For the elegance and continuity of the piece, quite the opposite. They disrupt the flow of the grain, appearance of the stain and seem to directly or indirectly needlessly draw attention to a perceived defect in the wood. As far as the use of the CNC, you use it quite well and it seems to expand on the efficiency of what you make. When too many of your pieces are made via CNC it seems like you become little more than the assembler of the pieces. I know that isn't the case it just appears so. With a lot of CNC work it lowers the interest of us woodworkers who haven't invested/learned that tool. When that happens I look for other things in your videos that could bring new insight to my work. CNC makes a lot of sense when it helps create things that conventional woodworking couldn't. When used for "regular" woodworking it's value seems to be more efficiency based than art/skill based. Your increase in maturity of speech permits a younger audience(ie. sons and daughters) to participate without the adult viewer having to explain or avoid unnecessary crudity. Keep up your good work and novel designs.

If you were going for old fashioned builds and old fashioned tools, then a CNC would ruin that. But you seem to have a modern style of woodworking, so modern tools fits. While it can provide a shortcut, you don’t abuse it. You use it to make projects/videos in a timely fashion.

A couple of things I don`t like as a professional woodworker from across the pond, 1`st bow ties are ugly, 2nd that cabinet was assembled without dowels or dominos , 3rd no nails on the cabinet door pieces against the fabric ,only glue is a bad idea for longevity, 4rd again that obsession with the bow ties that I don`t understand , for such a small crack u could`ve mixed wood glue or transparent resin with sanded dust from the same wood filled that up and sanded it over , would have looked million times better or just a small piece of wood instead 10 times of the size bow tie, 5th I think u over sanded the edges and ruined that natural look of the wood , preferred if u kept the original edges shape and lightly burshed them off after removing the bark. All in all it`s still a nice looking table.

The over use of a CNC machine isn't the right phrase. You use the CNC machine predominantly because it allows you to make projects for customers in your area. It's part of your niche. I'm sure there are other wood craftsman in your area that work well without a CNC machine and may not even be an appropriate tool in their shop. We all use the tools we have to make the projects that people enjoy buying. If someone was looking for an item with hand cut joints only, you may not be able to provide that. Just the same way I could produce the projects you do because I don't have a CNC machine. You don't over use it, you produce projects using it.

That is one stand up piece to be proud of. Also, I have the mental age of a 12 year old boy. I laughed a little bit every time you said "crotch".

Great video! Very cool! About a year ago, I was selling some small woodworks (pens, clocks, etc.) at a craft fair and next to me was a guy selling logo signs from Harley Davidson, every NCAA Football team, NASCAR, etc. (all licensed logos that he DID NOT have license to sell.) People were buying his CNC'd pirated logo signs and not my "real" woodworking items! That made me HATE CNC! (I don't have the money or space for one, and wouldn't pirate logos to sell for $20-$30 each like this guy anyway.) Woodworkers like you that USE your CNC as part of "real" woodworking restores my opinion of the tool. I still cannot afford or have room for one, but I hate them a little less! LOL As for bowties, I am not a fan. I understand their usefulness and utility, but I just don't really like the way they look, but you do you!! 👎Semper Fi (USMC 1992-1996 🦅🌎⚓ and certified LE 2008-2021👮‍♂🚔)

Use whatever technology you have. “Power tools isn’t woodworking” always irritated me. You still have to know how/when to use them. Design is more important.

Stand up. I have a standing desk in my office but the top isn’t nearly as nice. Bowties, no 👎🏻 the shape just never looks right to me, too angled.

Bowties 👍🏼 im a professional joiner and CNCs are quicker and safer for curved work, but i do miss doing it all by router and jigs somedays

Is American Walnut considered a "strong", durable wood? In India walnut is considered soft wood, suitable only for things that are going to be (hand) carved, not so good for furniture.

bowties 👍 I like them, but I especially like them *with* epoxy. I feel like they go together really well esthetically, and filling the gap with epoxy keeps the void of the crack from collecting all the Schmutz that would otherwise collect down in there.

Any suggestions for how to cut a tambour channel without a cnc? My operation (my crappy garage) doesn't have room so I'm free handing it lol

You use the tools you have, whether it's only a scrub plane or CNC... and make no apologies. Woodworking is what we make, not the pretension we aspire to.

I hate bowties in wood. My eyes get drawn to that one spot and it just looks out of place. It doesn't ever match the wood and always goes against the grain. It's also never in a spot that looks symmetrical or makes sense. It feels random every time. I just find them eyesores but I understand how having them means the craftsman really put time in effort in their work. Obviously its required for rigidity, so I would like it underneath and not on top of anything I would own.

Time is money and it seems the CNC really saves a lot of time. Beyond that knowing how to program and set up a CNC is a skill in and of itself. That being said it never hurts to challenge yourself and expand your skill set.

The trouble you have about 10 minutes in, were you discard a piece of wood and find one less nice; could you have made the original piece of slab into a veneer on another piece of wood, saving the looks of the original slab???

I agree using less CNC. Plus less overall high-end tools. I've noticed with woodworking videos it's all about what tools people use versus the actual project. We get it you guys can afford the good stuff LOL

If I paid that much for one machine (CNC) I'd use it 24/7 while I worked on things by hand.
