I've been looking for ultra-lightweight vapor barrier clothing for backpacking. This non-breathing material is perfect for that. Thank you for inspiring me.

Great job. I’m looking to make a CF rain jacket to replace my OR H2. Subbed

Awesome! A little lighter weight cuben fiber will work well but be less noisy than heavier weight.... Have fun!
@josephi69162 жыл бұрын
I like this idea but I'm worried they would be really noisy. Do you find them to be too nosiy when hiking?

Super awesome! Have you made anything else with cuben fiber? Im in the design stages if making my own pack and tent
@LittlebackbreakersBlogspot7 жыл бұрын
+wiseandfunfox , I haven't made a shelter or pack yet. But I have made rain chaps for my husband and I, rain mits, and some stuff sacks. It is great to be able to MYOG so you can accommodate your specific needs. Good luck and thanks for watching!

What kind of size and type needle and thread did you use. Well done on the gear. Kids don’t have stuff like this which makes it hard for us to get them out there. Thanks for posting.

Sorry I actually can't remember... It does not need to be too big... The cuben fiber tape reinforces well. Just remember any holes will allow water through. Definitely try a sample seam before stitching the final product. Happy hiking!

I really love your video. I want to make my own jacket and pants. I have never done anything like this. Do you have a pattern you could send me? I think I'm going to use tape instead of sewing. How much cuben fiber would I need? Any help is appreciated.
@LittlebackbreakersBlogspot6 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness Micheal, sorry I just saw your comment. I don't have a jacket pattern. For my kids pants I just traded around their snowpants so there would be enough room. For an adult that could be a bit bulky. For myself, I made chaps. I basically traced around the pantlegs of some roomier pants. Unfortunately I don't have a pattern to send you. Because cuben fiber is so expensive you might consider making a mock up with an old bedsheet to get you an idea of the pattern. Just be sure to leave extra length since they tend to crinkle up a smidge

I'm looking at making rain pants for my three kids. My son is in a size 8, and my daughters are in sizes 6 and 3. Any clue how much yardage I need of the material? How much did you start with?
@LittlebackbreakersBlogspot6 жыл бұрын
Hey Amanda, thanks for watching....I can't remember how much I ordered. But I bought more than I would need, knowing I would make other things. And I definitely have. I've made pack covers for the whole family as well as a couple of food hanging bags. You might consider using some scrap fabric to make a prototype for one of your kids and then estimate how much you would need from there. Sounds like an exciting project. Good for you!

Cuben fiber is expensive and susceptible to abrasion. I haven't had my boys wear it for that kind of thing.

Is sewing cuben fiber any different than other fabrics? I'm scared to rip it.
@LittlebackbreakersBlogspot7 жыл бұрын
+Michael Smith thanks for watching! So, yes, working with cuben fiber is unlike other fabrics. It is slippery, so you have to be careful that your surfaces match up appropriately. As well, any pinhole in the cuben fiber is a potential way to let water in. But until a few years ago, I never would have thought I'd be sewing great on my own. Take your time. Oh and get a good amount of cuben tape to seal any"mistake" pinholes.

Would you consider starting an ultralight cottage company because I think a lot of hikers would be interested in thes?
@LittlebackbreakersBlogspot7 жыл бұрын
+Michael Molloy thanks for watching! As much as I would love to start an ultralight cottage company, I don't think I'm quite ready to quit my day job. We will see you on the trail!

Sorry...I can't remember... I think I used heavier weight cuben fiber than I really needed to. I would suggest you look at a cottage company that makes other gear with cuben fiber. It will describe the weight of the cuben fiber in the product and you can decide what weight of cuben fiber to use for your rain pants. Thanks for watching!

You're right... The full pants are for my kids. My husband and I use chaps for better ventilation.
