Your reassurance to people in the US about using metric measures resonates very strongly with me. I am from the UK and I grew up using measurements in feet and inches etc - though I always struggled with arithmetic operations and fractional values of such quantities. Then at about age 60 I decided that - as an awful lot of things in the UK are moving toward the metric system - it was time that I really started using it. SOoooooo glad I did. Once you have the basics into your head, designing and making stuff gets so much easier cos you have no more dealing with all those irregular quantities and crazy fractions - makes all that side of things a piece of cake. I would encourage any maker who has been delaying their move to metric to take the plunge - you won't regret it.

Thanks so much for watching! I really love this display case. I'm making a second one to go underneath the first one and I'm making one that's even bigger than those and several smaller ones to hang around in spaces that normally wouldn't be able to hold a display case. One of those little ones I'm calling a Grail case because it's meant to feature one or two six scale figures but you could put a half shelf in there and if you collect 7-in figures, you could have a couple of rows for 7-in figures. The case in the link below is the Grail case and it's going to be my next tutorial. It would have been released sooner but thinking about including a couple of different sizes in the tutorial. I'm working on it feverishly right now. instagram.com/p/Cj26xxNOQUS/?igshid=OGQ2MjdiOTE=

As this started I was thinking "Exactly like my Moducases and now I don't have to donate a kidney to get more imported to the UK". You're an absolute hero as I have been looking for somewhere like Ooznest in the UK to do this for ages! Only thing I would change is for the acrylic sheets you can do what Moducase do and use the plastic inserts that slot in the 5mm channels to hold them in place.
@PopCultureLivingRoom
@PopCultureLivingRoom 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Scott! I'm happy I was able to help out. People from the UK definitely have an advantage on cost for the aluminum. I look everyday for cheaper alternatives for the value and Ooznest is hands down the best for no matter where you live. I did try to use the slot covers in the channels for the acrylic but they were still too wide. I don't own any Moducases so I am not sure what theirs looks like. I have been looking for something that could go in the channel and hold the acrylic. What do the moducase ones look like? Are they thinner than the channel? I'd love to figure that out. If you know or have pics, could you send them to my instagram. I'm always trying to improve the cases so any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks for your support.
@scotteh85

@@PopCultureLivingRoom Let me grab you some pics, I'll fire them over shortly. I have no idea what they're actually called so I can't find them online... yet. I priced up a build from the UK and it works out to about £300 for the size of a Moducase DF120 (minus tools) as I own 3 DF120 from Moducase already so know the cost to import them. If I was to buy a single DF120 unit from them and the shipping was minimal and there was no import tax I wouldn't think the effort for this was worth the difference. The problem is with shipping and import tax it added on about £350 to the overall cost. That makes this build worthwhile in my eyes as I can do a direct comparison between this custom build and Moducase for the same dimensions.

Thank you so much! If you do stack them you will need a Quad T-Nut to lock the cases together. It will slide in the back between the 2 joints and screw in. Here is a link to Quad T-Nuts: openbuildspartstore.com/quad-tee-nut-makerlink-10-pack/?ref=BvQnmjqj7p98MT For adding feet, You can go one of 2 ways. 1. Using rubber feet with T-nuts and screw. This one does not require anything but buying the rubber feet. They come with everything you need. Here is the link. amzn.to/3TrnMYa 2. This way requires to get the you to have the bottom end of the posts threaded. These can screw in or out to level the case. @PopCultureLivingRoom

Thanks so much for watching! I definitely think the French cleat could support the DeLorean. I recently made one that is 53 in wide x 23 in deep display and it's been on my wall for months without any issues. The key is to make sure that all of your screws are tight and there shouldn't be a problem. Also make sure that you put the other side of the French cleat into a stud or 2. Have you bought all the materials yet for the build? If not, you can go with a 3 mm thick PVC sheet instead of the 6 mm thick. It's cheaper and it does the same job. @PopCultureLivingRoom
@PopCultureLivingRoom 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching! And thank you for your support. Initially I didn't mention anything for the bottom because I was making another display case to put underneath it and I didn't think about it. With the size of this video, I was bound miss something sadly. When I did start thinking about what to add to the bottom, I started having a bunch of ideas and then I thought I should make an update video with all the ideas which I plan on doing. One thing you can do for the bottom so that the wood isn't showing is you can cut another piece of PVC foam sheet to the same measurements and notches of the top panel and then slide it into the channel at the bottom. This will give you a nice black panel to look at instead of the wood. There should be plenty PVC sheet leftover to make this. Another thing I was thinking was to wire LED lights under there and slide a translucent white acrylic panel in the channel at the bottom so that you can have light shooting down. Or you can make kind of a light box and add LED lights and have an acrylic panel with the logo of your figures in the bottom channel. Hope this makes sense.

great looking display case but i have a few things you might need to think about. first, its great you looked for studs but those plastic anchors won't go into the stud. they're only designed for drywall. you'd be better off getting some type of lag screw or something ment to hold weight that will penetrate into the stud for best strength. second would be to consider using a second french cleat on the bottom. you might have used a ton of anchors in the wall and to hold the other half onto the extrusion, but the entire weight of everything hanging there is being put on just two small screws that hold that piece of extrusion to the rest of the frame. hate to see this fall off and hurt someone. just things to consider.

Hi Jesse. Thank you so much for watching! I totally agree with you about using plastic anchors with studs. It just won't work. I don't believe I told people to use the anchors on the studs in the video. I'll have to look in to the lag screws. I'm always looking for better ways to do things. Thanks for the tip. How much was the total cost of the materials?
@PopCultureLivingRoom
@PopCultureLivingRoom 2 жыл бұрын
The cost per material used without the lights is $238.60USD and with lights it's $277.78USD. The cost includes shipping. A big factor for the cost is, $50 of that is shipping of the aluminum extrusions from the UK. The Aluminum only cost $60 and it was cut to the size I wanted. If I got the Aluminum extrusions from the couple places I looked at in the US, the price difference of the totals was only a few dollars and the US distributors did not cut them for you. If you live in the UK or EU, this will be a less expensive case due to the shipping. And if you live in California, chances are it will be a bit more expensive. If you want to compare it to something, the closest I could find that was comparable to my case, would be the Sixth98 by Moducase. Which is $320 + Shipping. I am going to add the cost to the video description.

Do you still recommend the Ooznest UK company for the Aluminum Extrusion in the USA?
@PopCultureLivingRoom
@PopCultureLivingRoom 9 ай бұрын
I do still recommend Ooznest. I do have a US seller, Open Builds: openbuildspartstore.com/?ref=BvQnmjqj7p98MT I still recommend Ooznest over Open Builds for most things. Ooznest's website is easy to use and they offer more options, for example Ooznest's minimum length they can cut an extrusion is 40mm and Open Builds is 100mm. The shipping may seem high for Ooznest but for something like the case in this video, the overall price is only a few dollars off of each other. For Open Builds, you have to buy full pieces and then email them to cut the size you need and have them threaded. What I do for a project is go to both sites and figure out which would be the best way to go. Usually Ooznest wins. Thanks for the question. If you have any other questions, I'm here to help.

Is there any reason you don’t put the metal tape on the acrylic rather than the magnet tape, and so put the magnetic tape on the aluminium frame instead. Since it’s already black, it doesn’t need to have black vinyle tape put on it (where the metal tape needs that extra step) ? Thanks for the answer !
@PopCultureLivingRoom
@PopCultureLivingRoom 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. There is nothing that would stop you from doing that. It would work. Though the metal tape seems to have a bit better adhesive and sticks better to things. I also prefer the look of the tape on the case rather than vice versa. It's all a matter of preference. I am always looking for ways to improve the display cases so I am trying to find new and better ways to attach the acrylic to the case. You'll have to send me pics of your case if you make it the way you talk about in your comment. I'd love to check it out. Thanks for watching!

@@PopCultureLivingRoom thanks for your answer man ! For now I have made 2 the same size as you, with the same magnetic tape arrangement. But since I plan to make more, having an extra step less is kinda tempting, that’s why I asked you that :p And sure the vinyle is better looking, the magnet tape is black but more like brownish black so not like the extrusion for sure. But since it’s hidden 99% of the time, I was wondering if this extra step is really necessary. I am gonna try it it the other way around like discussed. I’ll send you pics if you want. I also checked other ways to attach the panel. So far I have another technique with magnet that I can also send you pictures. I wonder how moducase do to punch magnets in their extrusions tho
@PopCultureLivingRoom
@PopCultureLivingRoom 2 жыл бұрын
@@neoxjin I believe moducase drills a hole and places in the circular magnet. From my experience though just having a few circular magnets like the modu case is not as strong as the metal tape method. On the original magic cases you would have to screw in a safety screw to make sure they didn't fall off. The newer moducases have a little ledge around the front of the case so that the acrylic doesn't slide down. With the metal tape method it's so strong it won't slide down at all.
