Thanks for sharing. I'm a bit of a Lego junky and a few years ago I purchased a couple of PAX units and shelves to display some of my collection. Problem I ran into is that this is in my home office space and I have multiple computers and a ceiling fan on 24x7 and now have a dog in the house so dust and hair are a huge problem. I've been trying to figure out a way to close off the units and I think with some modifications I could implement this on the PAX units. Your lighting instructions are certainly something I'm going to have to look into implementing as well. I might even look into swapping a few of the wooden shelves with some acrylic ones too. Thanks again for sharing these videos; you really got the creative juices flowing on how to take my displays to the next level!
@PopCultureLivingRoom2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! You could definitely do this with a PAX. It would be real easy. You could use metal tape and tape the edges of the PAX with it and use the magnets on the acrylic and attach it that way. My hanging display case video talks about metal tape a bit and might give you an idea or two.

Just subscribed. Best custom display on KZbin! I've casually been looking for a display for a few years and seriously been looking for one for 3 weeks and nothing beats this one. In addition, too many collectors go black. Even some of the most popular content creators, but white is the way to go. You can't see much of the detail in black. This even rivals Modu Case. I want to test using clear acrylic corner moldings. 2 even, for each of the front pillars for added support. This way the pillars don't get on the way of the figures. Thanks man!! You did it.

If you don’t double up the magnetic strips will they not stick well on the shelf because the foam is taller than the magnetic strip? Thanks again for all your help!
@PopCultureLivingRoom Жыл бұрын
I double up on the magnetic tape because of the rivets on the display. My display cabinet has rivets. Other style cases do not have rivets. Does your display case have rivets on it? I am not 100% sure if the foam thickness will impede the magnets if you decide to use one layer.

When you apply the magnets to magnets, are they perfectly aligned to each other?

Could you do this with a single large front panel instead of three smaller ones?
@PopCultureLivingRoom7 ай бұрын
Yes. You can definitely use one big panel. The issue with one big panel is that there will be less surface area of magnetic contact to the frame and the acrylic may slide down. If your garage shelf has the rivets like the one in the video, you can use the rivets as a place for the ends magnetic strip to rest so the panel does not slide down. If you go with the one big panel, I would recommend using 1/16" thick acrylic. It will be flimsier but will be lighter. I would also recommend using 1" wide magnetic tape. Thanks for watching and if you have any other questions, I'm here to help.

I think you can save a lot of measuring by putting the magnet strips on the shelf and trimming them in place, then peel the back and press the panel onto it while it's on the rack. Then take it down to put more pressure/cure
@PopCultureLivingRoom Жыл бұрын
I did try that at first. It sounds easy but can be difficult because before you press down on the glass you have to have it perfectly lined up. If you don't they will be in the wrong spot and you'll have to redo it. I'm too much of a perfectionist and they never ended up being in the right spot. It ended up being easier for me to measure things from the top. By no means am I saying you shouldn't try it yourself because it might work for you. Thank you so much for watching and thanks for your suggestion!
@soylencer Жыл бұрын
@@PopCultureLivingRoom my other tip from related projects is to only peel the far ends (like the last ½ inch) of the sticky side, and fold the paper over. This will let it stick but can be removed by pulling from the middle until you're lined up perfectly, then pinch the folded paper and pull back slowly at a shallow angle as you press the strip down and it should keep itself aligned.

Is there any better/more profissional option than vinyl tape to finish the acrylic edges?

The only more professional way I can think of is spray painting the border on. I used vinyl tape because I was trying to mimic moducase which use vinyl for the border on their acrylic. @@PopCultureLivingRoom So I was thinking about this myself today (mind you I haven't done any of this yet) and I was wondering if J-Channel would be a better option then tape. It come in 8' lengths and the J-channel can be bought in both black and white as well as PVC and metal. And it can be nicely mitered on 45's. You could even throw a little super glue into the channel so that the plexi does slide at all in it. One other thing I was thinking about with the J-Channel is that the magnetic tape can rest up against the inside of the J and be neatly tucked away behind it resting directly on the shelf frame.

@@PopCultureLivingRoom Okay just making sure learned if you use normal round magnets you have to use one on panel and one on frame with both being mounted with two sided tape. Out of curiosity, wouldn't the magnetic tape be enough to keep dust out? Or at the very least, wouldn't you only need to add the weather stripping in the areas where a magnetic seal isn't present?
@PopCultureLivingRoom5 ай бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the question. You could definitely only add it to the sections where the magnet isn't. I felt it was easier to add it to the entire sheet instead of figuring out where the gaps would be. The surface is not completely flat for the case I used with the rivets so there are many gaps. I have a second case that has a smooth front and no rivets. With this one I don't use foam since there is a continuous flat surface. There are smaller gaps that you can see when the light is own but at the moment they don't bother me. Though I am thinking about adding foam to the acrylic on that case as it will increase the dust proofness. You don't have to use the foam for either. It's personal preference. I like to think of my videos as a template or starting point where you can customize your case the way you like. Thank you so much for watching!
@Yuri-fv8lv4 ай бұрын
@@PopCultureLivingRoom Quick follow up question...in your video you mention doubling up on the magnetic tape to account for the thickness of the weather stripping. Is that the route you ended up taking and if so, did you end up having to glue both strips to each other before gluing the combined strip to the acrylic? For that matter, did you glue the combined strip to the acrylic directly or did it end up being glued to the vinyl tape? Honestly I'm really just wondering if I should glue the tape to some other cheaper material to make up the missing 1/16". Thanks in advance!

Cool video. Just a question tho, Do you really want to use OPEN cell foam for dust free results? Not closed cell to minimize air flow and minuscule dust particles moving in and out with air pressure?
@PopCultureLivingRoom2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I use the open cell foam for its ability to compress. The foam will come above the magnetic tape so when you put it on the frame it will compress down and conform to any ridge or protrusion created by the brackets and rivets. Closed cell foam is too rigid and does not work. If the frame didn't have these brackets and rivets, you wouldn't need the foam as all you would need to do is put a continuous piece of magnetic tape on each side. Hope this helped.

How can you remove or re arrange your display with acrylic
@PopCultureLivingRoom5 ай бұрын
To be able to rearrange shelves on the garage shelf, you would use one large piece of acrylic on the front and use one piece of fiberboard or PVC sheet attached from the back of the display. I decided to make 3 large sections because I wanted to hide the frame of the garage shelf better. The large sections also gave me options for vehicles or adding shelves or risers within the section (see my riser video or floating shelves video). Nothing sucks as bad as starting to work on a project and one must pause to wait for correct items to be delivered. Thanks again for everything.

Good morning! The open cell foam is 1/4" thick. It's this thick to rise above the magnetic tape and then when you attach it to the frame the foam compresses and will contour over any bump or irregular part of the frame. One thing I would highly recommend is to use the magnetic tape I use on my display. I tested several types of magnetic tape in this by far is the strongest.

I believe my vinyl tape is 1&1/2 inch. Not 2''.. Did i mess up?
@PopCultureLivingRoom5 ай бұрын
I used the 2-in vinyl tape when I'm making a border that's larger than an inch. So if you're going to make the border 1 inch then 1 1/2 inches is fine because you will have enough to fold over. I believe for this case I used 2-in vinyl tape for the top and bottom because the shelves were wider than the side frame. If you don't mind seeing a little bit of the shelf on the top and bottom of the acrylic then you should be good with the 1 1/2 inch vinyl tape. @PopCultureLivingRoom3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Josh! As for the acrylic staying magnetized to the shelf, I have had no issues so far. They have been staying on great. I am in the middle of making an update video and in the video I will be suggesting using acrylic weld which will adhere the magnetic tape to the acrylic better. I have one or 2 strips that, when I remove the panel, the magnetic tape sticks to the shelf and comes off of the acrylic. As for a full sheet holding, I am not sure because you will have less magnetic tape used which would decrease the hold. You may need wider magnetic tape to have more surface area to cling on to. Another option might be going with a thinner front acrylic which will make it a bit lighter.
