If I had a 3D printer I would probably do this because I was looking at this IKEA case for a while. I think you did a fantastic job.

Thank you! The Tyranid version of the case doesn't have any printed parts except for the storage box attached to the back but that could easily be replaced with something else thats similar. Hope this helps :)

The Harvmatta fits perfectly into a Kallax storage unit, making it an excellent storage unit for home as well.

Awesome video and you have done an amazing job building the case, they look awesome. I always think it would be fair to include time spent too, although it's fun to build, I imagine you had to put in a lot of time. Regardless, you have inspired me to give this a go. Thankyou

Thank you! The overall build time was around 6-7 hours total over a few days for the non-3D printed version, but you're certainly right that time can always be a factor when comparing it to something you can buy off the shelf. Would love to know how you get on with yours!

Nice modification to the cases! If you want to avoid the drawers sliding out, you can attach magnets on the front lip and insert the drawers backwards. Then the magnets will stick to the rear panel and keep the drawers in place. About the flex: the dangerous flex is if the side panels buckle outwards and the middle drawer drops out of its rail and on top of the minis below. I'm thinking about reinforcing the side panels with some plywood, but haven't gotten to this part of the project yet.

Depending where you are from you might be able to get your hands on a carrying bag originally designed for transporting and storing overlock sewing machines. The bags by W6 (german or austrian manufacturer) are a perfect fit for Harvmatta and it's predecessor Kivssle and cost around 20€. Can be a bit of a struggle to get them in there, but especially if you remove the plate at the bottom of the carrying bag you should be doing fine. The bag is closable of course, comes with a handle (so no strain on the metal parts while lifting the case) and even has a bag on the inside of the lid in which you can store rulebooks or other stuff. I always add on of the unused trays in there which offers extra protection from the front. I have several of them in use and very pleased with the solution.

The really useful box with a magnetic sticky sheet on the bottom and magnetized minis has been great. All I play is kill team so Im able to store my 3 teams with no fuss and room for more. BUT, make sure you don’t have any extremely tall minis or you may need to buy a taller box. My Necron Technomancer is literally just a couple millimeters too tall for the 4L so he has to lay down for a nap when we travel. But I use other 4L containers to store all my paints and craft supplies. It makes it so that they all stack neatly into a tote or in a neat stack in my closet. I’ve had a really good experience with them.

Looks great! the only stuff i would change is that i would have a light finegrit sandpaper do-over before spraypainting the cases as to avoid chipping down the line. And just a tip, when using stencils either apply a varnish first and let it dry, or apply another layer of the colour that's underneath the stencil and let it dry a couple of mins, and then apply the main colour to avoid paint creeping under the stencil. (if one wants/going for the clean line look, that is) :)

For the glue on the Harvmatta, if you use methlyated spirits it will dissolve and wipe off easily, better than IPA. It's also pretty similar in footprint to the standard foam trays you see in most figure cases - I put them in empty figure case to transport, with a little foam to either side. Gives extra storage pouches and a nice handle, and when swapping armies, can just slot the shelves into a Kallax :) .

I mounted my Harvmatta inside a cheap makeup-suitcase with wheels and a front opening, that solved the weight and sturdiness issues, it also made it so the trays couldn’t fall out.

These look good! Perhaps glue the spare shelf upside down below the top to stiffen it up a bit? And I might 3D print a small handle with the same bolt spacing as the metal catch strip to help open the door.

very cool and helpful video, it is a bit unfortunate I've already decided on using metal discs glued to the bottom of my minis vs magnets because I play aeldari so a lot of my models are a bit more top heavy and I need something a little heavier so they don't just fall over after bumps, also because they are 1mm thick vs 2mm so they can fit on non-gw bases as well.

@CupolaDaze
@CupolaDaze 11 сағат бұрын
I think my only issue is how much the case flexes when you lift it up. I'm already thinking of additional storage on the side and that flex would make me feel uneasy. Also I think a printed frame for the door would help close the gaps and give it a more complete look.
@ForTheRoll
@ForTheRoll 8 сағат бұрын
I certainly felt the same about the flex when I was making the video but if it helps, the case has been moved soooo many times throughout filming and being taken to games over the last couple of weeks and i've had no issues whatsoever. Great suggestion on the printed frame too!

I've actually ordered HARVMATTA. There is one slight detail you forgot to mention... This thing is HEAVY as F! That could never be a transport case, unless all you do is drive and barely walk. Anyone who thinks you can easily carry this think -- you cannot. It's bulky and it's heavy. Stick to plastic containers in IKEA bag.
@ForTheRoll
@ForTheRoll 6 сағат бұрын
I certainly agree that it would be heavy to walk any long distance with it - definitely something to consider. There are some very good backpack transport cases out there that would be ideal for those that walk alot. From car to table though, its perfectly fine, IMO. :)

my only real complaint about your video is when you stated that spending that amount of money really isn't feasible when it cost more than $125 for just a 700 point combat patrol yet you are talking about a 2000 point army how did you afford it did you steal it? so that doesn't support your claim it isn't affordable or feasible! Did you even notice how the top bowed when you picked it up? for the added security of it not just falling apart I would gladly spend an extra $20-40 bucks. just get real its going to cost either way you go, and i still want to see this 2000 point army for that cost that you mentioned!
@ForTheRoll
@ForTheRoll Сағат бұрын
I think there may have been a bit of misunderstanding as to the cost breakdown being for the transport case, not the mini’s themselves. Hope this clarifies.

My dude, some tips to make this way better - Go back to the hardware store and buy a pop rivet gun and some rivets. These are both super cheap. Rivet the cases together, meaning no weird 3D printed corners Rivet your Hinges instead of using nuts and bolts. You glossed over how your nuts block 2 rows of possible tray heights, PER NUT. the rivets will fix that. Ditch the magnetic clasp. We both know it's pointless and adds unnecessary bulk. Just get a 90° latch buckle. Again, stupid cheap, low profile and will actually hold the door closed. Personal preference but I'd have gone with a pivoting handle, again for less bulk. Laslty, if you're going to stencil, don't do it backwards. You cut out the shape and spray into the hole let by the cut out shape. Regardless, if you want to do it the way you did it, spray the symbol in the same colour as the background you've already put down. When dry, go over with the 2nd colour. This will stop colour bleed and give you crisper lines. Also, if you're going to say to go easy when drilling, I'd try and edit the video so you don't look like you're brute forcing the drill bit through every hole. That bit is blunt my dude. Sharpen it or replace it before you damage something or injure yourself. Otherwise, use a smaller bit first and then go up a couple of sizes to the desired size.
@dexamundo8522
@dexamundo8522 6 сағат бұрын
Bonus tip. A nail punch can stop drill wondering on smooth surfaces but so can a bit of Masking tape.

Thank you for the feedback, its appreciated. Some very good suggestions here. Whilst the pop rivet gun is very good (and one I had considered), I wanted to reduce the amount of additional tools average crafters would need to use to make the project without spending more money. Latch buckles also very good and will definitely do a great job. I do appreciate your other feedback though and will definitely keep it in mind for future projects.
