That litter box is amazing, Rachel! What an absolutely beautiful and functional design and very convenient! I wish I had one, for sure! You could grow real cat crass on the side to help clean the air and let the cats graze. Sign me up to buy one as soon as you stick a patent on it!! 👏👏👏A few super minor suggestions: attach a top-latch, rectangular dirty kitty litter box with magnets and keep it on the side where the stairs attach. You can fit the stairs around/over them. Lastly, I love the litter (I’ve tried non-treated pine pellets before), but they seem painful to be jumping on. All kitties are unique, though. Nah, cat paws are padded to absorb the shock when jumping/falling. The distance between the steps and the pellets is far too little for them to feel any discomfort.

Adding a sifting tray at the bottom that allows for the sawdust to fall through helps a lot with reducing the dust. The cats just kick around the pellets and it allows for the sawdust to settle. It also separates the used and unused litter better!

That’s a super great idea so their not breathing in so much dust that is continuously accumulating, especially with three cats using it it wouldn’t take long for it to pile up and that can’t be healthy for the kitties. I think your idea would help reduce the amount of dust they stir up significantly. I hope she sees your post. The reason I replied is because when my daughter got her two kitties I was researching kitty litter and came across an article warning about litter that crests a lot of dust can be very harmful for your pets and I think your idea would be a perfect solution. I love when people offer different suggestions for projects, sometimes they can be very useful. Just people helping people!🙂

If you purchase the same wood pellets intended for horses at a farm store a 40 lb bag is about $5.99 plus tax and lasts me for 1 cat an entire year. Smaller bags labeled for cats at pet stores were costing much more as a yearly expense. Spray the pellets with water so the coating allows the sawdust to burst out of the pellets. Have been doing this for 11 (eleven) years. Easy to scoop and flush (if you have city sewar)

Believe it or not, it's actually more common than you might think. See, in most offices, workers don't get illustration software unless they specifically request it to be installed cuz licensing issues and stuff. But they DO all have microsoft office. So many people have relied on the shape drawing tools in powerpoint (and good ol' microsoft paint) as a way to bypass this restriction. But this also seems to be leading to a detriment in other softwarw. My dad works in finance and had to train a new worker and he was appalled that she didn't know how to use Excel and instead did all her calculations by hand and just drew tables in powerpoint. He retired after that. XDDDDD I have a graphics degree, got into aerospace, and the head office heard about it and asked if I could design some graphics for them but they would not give me any adobe software to work with (but they gave it to the QE to design a tshirt with, wtf? Lol) so I too had to get creative and learned about the drawing tools in powerpoint!! LOL OMG THE RENDER TIME WAS A NIGHTMARE, but I made it work! XD Also even the other engineers used it to make crude representations for their quality announcements. How far powerpoint has come! LOL

I'm a woodworker. If you want to use dowels in the future, my preferred alignment method is to place the head of a brad nail between the pieces I want to dowel, align them to be flush, then wack it with a mallet so that the nail head leaves matching marks on both pieces. An alternate method is to use masking tape sticky-side-out across the edge and the sides, use something pointy to pierce the tape where I want my holes through the tape and mark the wood. Then after aligning the joint you can transfer the tape to the other piece and mark through the holes in the tape onto the wood. I also want to mention the glue block, a 2-3in block with 90° corners that you can put glue on two sides of and wiggle into a long 90° edge joint for extra strength. I use this method to attach tapletops, and it would also work well for reinforcing or repairing any long wall joint. Great project, and I hope you try dowels again in the future. They're very strong and stable when they're not more than 1/3rd the thickness of the pieces.

I feel like it seems silly that I am so inspired by a litter box (given that I do not have cats nor do I have any intention to build a litter box) but it is just so cool to see Rachel custom make things for her own needs in their home!! I am so sorry for your loss. I see you and I feel you. All cats are precious friends, brimming with curiosity and love to give. Two months ago, my little one had to be put down to sleep too... Mimi was 14 years old and she was my everything. She was kind, smart and we loved each other company a lot. She was struggling with rhinotracheitis for a few years but she was doing pretty much okay, but then suddenly the infection spread to her whole body and she couldn't take it anymore... May Crackles rest in peace. Hopefully Mimi and her can play along in the flufly clouds together...

For anyone wondering about wood pellet litter. is really popular but not for all cats since some cats hate the bigger pallets. U have special litterboxes for wood pallets. they are supposed to turn into sawdust when the cat pees. wood pallet litterboxes have a second layer at the bottom that works as a sift. u sift the litter on top. all the sawdust falls in the pan below it and u trow that out every week. it reduces the smell so much! and because u remove the pee right away. the other litter does not start to smell so u never have to dump it all out and add a whole new batch of litter. u just keep replacing the litter that turned into sawdust and have been removed. I love the poop house rachel made! its so pretty!

Among the litterboxes in my home, we have one litter box that have the sifter. But the gap between the box and the sifter is shallow😅. Wish it had more depth so that i can remove the sawdust once a week instead of every 3/4 days. And the one i have doesn't have the pull-out tray. I've always thought of DIYing one but never have the chance yet. Most of the time, the cats used that box for peeing rarely a poop is in there so i guess thats something haha (I have more than 5 cats btw)

@@_kalaharii don't really have solid advice for that cuz i also face the same thing 😅. But a tip i saw on tikt0k suggested using dirt trap door mats for wood pellet litter specifically instead of the cat litter mat which works better with the regular clumping clay litter. I haven't try it yet tho. My routine so far is to filter out the sawdust using a scoop with holes that are small enough so that the pellets dont pass through (i do this every 2/3 days but better to do it everytime you clean it). I keep a small broom and a vacuum nearby (if you have handheld/robot vacuum even better). I'm planning on putting up tall barriers around the boxes to deter sawdust tracking. I think if you have a spare room/store room is even more ideal but that's not applicable to everyone.

I want to use alternative litters like that but my one cat is, well ... really dumb and will eat anything remotely like food. So until she eventually passes (hopefully many years from now) I can't. Some suggestions for improvements, a V2 or for viewers that might plan to do such a project: 1) Acrylic might not be the best material for this kind of project. Why? You might want to sometimes clean and disinfect the litter box with alcohol. Alcohol can irreversibly destroy acrylic plastic parts (at first it looks like spider webs forming in the material and then it finally shatters). 2) If you have multiple cats be sure to not just have a single entry/exit, so one cat can never block the only escape route for another cat inside. 3) Use 100 % beeswax (melt it to apply it, for example with a hot air gun or a little iron) to seal the wood, beeswax is safe for cats, makes it easier to clean and acts anti-bacterial as well as anti-fungal. Pure, natural beeswax melts at around 60 °C/140 °F so you can even safely repair damaged areas in the beeswax coating later without having to use very high temperatures that might cause damage to other materials nearby. 4) Use a 120 mm or 140 mm PC fan (a model with high static pressure in its technical specifications*) with a filter on the intake side to create a slightly negative relative air pressure inside the litter box, the filter will collect the dust and when running the fan at 5 V instead of 12 V (for example with an USB Type-A AC power supply from an old phone) it will be basically silent and its power draw is like 1 W. Bonus points: Use activated carbon filters which help neutralize unpleasant smells. The fan will also increase the amount of circulating air inside the litter box drastically which speeds up the drying processes which in turn slows down the growth of bacteria and fungi. *I’m a big fan of the Austrian fan manufacturer Noctua. The fans are expensive but they have a 6-year warranty and their build quality is the best. Due to the dusty environment in a litter box I would get fans from their “Industrial” line-up which are especially protected against the ingress of dust and liquids into their motor hub so they’ll last longer and can even be cleaned with water. 5) Place the litter box elevated on something, this makes emptying and cleaning it significantly more ergonomic for you and prevents back pain.

Was about to say around the sam efor the fan part x) Love the design, if dust is still an issue despite the filter you can add a small computer fan to seclude the wooden dust in a filter after your cat moved it and by stopping the fan, dust will fall in a small plastic bag under the fan. another good idea would be to implement designs from sifting litterboxes so the sawdust drops down to the bottom when the cats urinate (maybe also have a plastic liner so it doesn't stick).

@@autumnhamm9381 If you want something transparent then you can actually order rectangular sheets of thinner tempered glass (the “tempered“ property is very important for safety in case it breaks) online in dimensions you specify when placing the order, no need to cut it yourself which can be very difficult and risky, accidentally damaging it. Getting transparent plastics that are rigid like acrylic and aren’t affected by alcohol for DIY projects can be pretty difficult since unfortunately many manufacturers or suppliers lie about the actual chemical properties/recipes of the plastic materials they sell (it’s very, very frustrating). That’s one of the reasons the recycling of plastics is pretty much an industry lie since there is a vast amount of different variants of the same type of plastic which eventually makes it impossible to economically sort it absolutely correctly which you would have to do to properly recycle it.

Really nice job. I have a couple of hints as an architect who’s built a ton of large building models. Use less glue. One strip down the middle will spread to the right depth once you clamp it. And use tack mats on the steps and path to the door. We use them on construction sites in buildings to prevent debris tracking. It should cut down the sawdust a lot since it’s stuck to those fuzzy paws. I love the Japanese saws! I wish I’d seen those in my school days. Great use of magnets.

From personal experience: Make sure to seal all the wood extremely well against moisture. Accidents happen. Being in close proximity to “smelly stuff” will, over time, tend to deep into any bare wood. Obviously you’ll want any finishes to be nontoxic but impervious to moisture and easily cleaned. Great work! Both the design and execution are amazing.

Rachel, you are so talented! I love the final product. I do have one suggestion. We use pine pellets in our litter box that we modified ourselves. I got the idea from another KZbin video “you’re doing your litter box all wrong” or similar title. She explained that the genius of using pellets is to put them in a box with many holes in the bottom with another box underneath. The secret is to have an air gap of 3-4”. When the wet pellets disintegrate they fall through the holes( some scraping around helps) then you just dump out the saw dust. You never have to dump out the litter to change it you just keep adding some to it. It never gets gross and the urine saw dust is trapped underneath so it doesn’t smell. Maybe you can add a drawer underneath to collect the sawdust?

A sifting pan for pine pellets so the sawdust falls into the bottom away from the pellets. Easy to clean up. Just dump the sawdust.

10:38 book-ends can be crooked. Just get two of the same, aluminium carpenter's squares. You can even clamp them in place with tiny clamps using the holes. I'd get the common size, but there's also large ones used for beam saws, which you're likely to find in Japan on account of the fact that Japan has a lot of wood houses of the more "granular" variety. Big beams, big planks etc. One thing you can do to make sure they're really good is you ask the place where you get them to allow you to do the square test. Basically, you line up the hooking edge of the square to the edge of a table, and put a dot on the far end and close end of the square's 90 degrees edge. Then you flip the square on that axis and line the hook on the table to check if the edge matches with the dots. If that's the case, then you have a decent square.

I didn't think I'd be excited about a litter box in my life, but today I am. But it feels injust, I'd prefer to call it the litter mansion. It fits in the room, it suits the cats... I use wood pellets in our litter boxes, they're the best, especially together with a double-bottom box. Pee turns pellets into saw dust that falls in the bottom. 4 times cheaper than actual litter and you only need to change the whole thing once a month or so. I empty the bottom once a week and give it a good clean.

I switched to a top-entry stainless steel litter box and it’s been great the past few months. Super easy to clean. The only downside right now is when my cat scratches it with his claws and it feels like nails on a chalkboard 🥲😆 great job Rachel! Such a fancy litter box!

I use a utility closet. Shelves for tools. Fan in ceiling to the attic, runs 24/7 low. Cat door in the closet door. Litter pad in front of box(inside the closet) no mess in the hallway. No smell. Change it once a week.:)
