I really like the floating idea. I grew up in a high clay content area with a 42" frost line and saw those conditions pop any fence or desk post out of the ground unless given yearly attention. You are absolutely correct in that water will flow along until it reaches the post hole and down it will soak and cause all kinds of bad things to happen. Did I mention I hate clay.

He can bolt the beams all he want to but when you rely on the bolts to hold the weight of that deck when the beams are NOT on top of the post....that's the problem. You shouldn't bolt the beams through the post on the sides. The beam needs to be on top of the post for support.

Hey! Loving your videos for all our diy projects so thanks. We need to build a floating deck for our walk out garage loft so it’s raised around 10 feet above the ground BUT we’re on bedrock so can’t get piles in or dig down for concrete foundations for the posts. We’re in Ontario and wondered if we should use these blocks for a deck that high...it’s only an 8’x8’ deck but will have a staircase down to ground level too. We had intended to attach it to the garage wall and dig down as far as we can and fill with gravel but after seeing your comments now not sure 🤔

Hey Jeff, I was was watching your videos on rebuilding old decks. I have a 10 x 14 deck that needs to be dismantled to have brick work done. I was planing on reassembling it but desired after 23 years to change the design above. The framing is all in great shape, no rot. It is a floating deck. I plan to flip over the current deck boards since they have not been covered with anything other than wood preserver. The original top side was last covered in deck paint. The new brown colour of PT wood today is what I plan to have showing. My question is, can these boards be used flipped over even thought the crowns may not always be in the right direction now? After 23 years would they still cup a lot? I have power washed, sanded and added the micro Sienna brown wood preserver on 3 of the flipped sides and they look great. What was the name of the screws you used to attach the joist stringers? Back in the day I used the deck screws so there are newer products out there now. You also used those long 5” black screws that cost $3-$4 a screws, what are those called? Thank you for your help. Lynne Jeffreys

An easy way to put those beams up on your own would be to subtract the thickness of the beam and screw a block of 2x4 that distance lower on one side.. Life the other into place, level it throw in a screw.. Then just make your minor adjustment to the other side!

That beam design relies completely on the shear strength of the bolts and not the axial load of the posts. The beam should be sitting on the posts rather than connected as you have it.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY7 жыл бұрын
Oh Dimitri, let's not get carried away with structural strength. We are not bridging the Mississippi river here just building a deck. The reality is the shear strength of those bolts is almost equal to the axial strength of the wood. Regardless it would be quite impossible to overload this deck with people to the point of failure. perhaps If I stacked dump trucks up past the roof there would be a problem, but alas that is not likely to happen.

Great Videos. Thanks for sharing. i'll be using a design like this for our trailer up north this Summer. One question I have is about the diagonal bracing you used lengthwise on the posts. I understand why they are there. To hold the posts / deck form swaying or tipping lengthwise on the deck blocks.. The lag bolts on the box beams hold it form swaying width wise. Are the lengthwise diagonal braces permanent or do you use another method to stabilize the deck lengthwise that I missed in the video? If those braces are permanent, are they just screwed or do they need to be lagged? If you have any references you could share if need be I'd appreciate it. Thanks again.

The beams are relying on the strength of the screws, if the screws in one beam fail that beam falls, code where I am is that the beam must be over the post to provide actual structure support, if that's code where you are no worries, but you might start putting the beams over the posts as an added strength in the future Good video though!
@HomeRenoVisionDIY7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brandon, We are relying on the 20001b shear strength of each bolt. 2 bolts per post which is 8000 lbs per beam. the load for this deck is 64000 lbs on the top section alone. This is why we are confident.Just a thought. an engineer could approve using this system even if your code does not allow it. It installs much faster and gives you greater flexibility in designing.

I was thinking the same thing. It's just relying on shear strength of the fasteners. With the right fastener, it may be fine. I see it all the time afterall, but most would say that its wrong. And if the right fastener isn't used then its totally wrong, and a collapse liability. Beams should bear wright directly on top of posts. All home inspectors would call that out as a defect. Even ACA says that's wrong. However, I do believe Jeff is a really smart guy and knows what he's doing. I don't think he's just some slug making bogus content. Hi I see that there are no replies and so I thought I would reply. My dad's friend is a professional but not a licensed carpenter. All decks would have risks of uplift and you can attach the canvas awning on your house roof to the railings of your deck
@lyndior89635 жыл бұрын
As a former inspector, 2 bits of concern. Rain water passing through the deck or surface drain water can erode the limestone base below the top footing blocks and relying on a few screws into the joists to hold hundreds of pounds of decking plus hundreds of pounds of furniture plus hundreds of pounds of people is a sure way to create a bunch of future firewood. I didn't see any triangular bracing to any solid point of any degree, so when it comes tumbling down, it will all collapse in rapid swinging moving style. Homeowner's insurance may decline a claim for coverage on a non permitted deck over 3 ft in height. Otherwise great entertaining video.

Keep up the good work. One question - since they are on blocks and not in the ground what prevents the beams from moving sideways i.e. falling over completely to one side or the other? Limestone screenings under pressure actually resist erosion. as a safeguard we actually encased the piles with cement for added protection. And with any pier construction it is important to have access under the structure in case there is future need to shore up or re level any of the build.

No it is really a 2x6 it is just good to know that dimensional lumber has gotten a little smaller over the years .
@mlgfelix89795 жыл бұрын
Do not do this , the weight of the deck relies primarily on the bolts! Yes bolts are strong but put 10 people on that deck that’s easily over a 1000 pounds be safe .
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
Hi, we used 22 structural bolts on that deck. rated for 5000 lbs each. that is more than 220 lbs of shear / sq ft. no worries.
@Ken_Kollection6 жыл бұрын
Did i see what i think i saw. Did you guys really just screw the deck to the posts. At least you could have used lag bolts. You are relying ENTIRELY on the shear strength of a couple of small screws. You should have notched out the posts so that the weight of the deck is actually on the posts instead of the screws. One small party on that deck, an you're getting sued. Sorry. It does look very pretty, but its going to collapse soon.

di you fall asleep during the video Ken. That deck has over 20 carriage bolts in it to carry over 100,000lbs.
@brettweishalla36815 жыл бұрын
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY He did not fall asleep during the video. Go look at the video, or to save time just look 15 seconds before the end. You will clearly see both ends of two beams with no sign of a carriage bolt. Maybe you added them eventually, but it wasn't in the video that he just asked about.

Sandwich the 4x4 with the beams and screws are so unsafe and your not worried bout structure you should be worried bout being sued and what you are teaching your help the incorrect way it does not matter whete your located that's unsafe and wrong

Thanks Dean however we used bolts as well. Our inspectors passed the build so I will choose to trust them over you, Cheers! Perhaps things are different where you are!

just came across this video, love your teaching style. your son is a lucky young man to have you as teacher, at some point in his life he will fully appreciate this time he spent with you, even if he doesn't become a carpenter. "big dick" is just that...... poor guy.

Box beam outlawed in most states. Resders your house worthless

Actually if you add hurricane straps then an engineer can stamp the build.

After all the comments you would think that you would take this video down . Bolts through the posts is the dumbest thing you could possibly tell people to do . 5000 lbs shear strength bolts in lumber . The lumber splits very easily along the length . So your 5000 lbs shear strength is down to nothing when the load splits the wood . Admit this is wrong and take this down . If a inspector passed this he should be fired. What other excuse for your mistake are you going to come up with? No frost footings,no proper beam supports ,no joist hangers,no beam . Ridiculous unsafe deck
@jonathanchristian96966 жыл бұрын
Beams are wrong, should sit on top of posts. Enjoy the dangerous unsafe deck!

Most codes don't allow deck construction like this anymore. The supporting lumber needs to rest on the beam not bolted to it like they did a decade or more ago.

Really you probably shouldn't notch either if you are putting the joists on top of the post. It will create a void to trap water in the center of the post which will rot it over time, probably won't last as long as the bolt method even. If you are placing the joists on top of the post you can run a plate up the side of the post and joist and secure it that way.

He said, "in the winter time the whole deck will lift together. In the spring, the whole deck will settle together." That sounds really stupid. He built a deck that moves around every six months. He seems to expect nature to occur uniformly and linearly. The video is very entertaining, but I would not build a structure like that. It's nit going to work.

I have not finished watching and at about 8+ minutes in. Nor have a read single comment yet. But I am shaking my head and thinking you actually put this video up as "instructional"? First a box beam? No not in my area in Maine. Now I am at the part where you are connecting the beam to the post and can not believe the fasteners you are using. Are those phillips head and not even posi-drive? I do not believe they are even structural fasteners. The shear strength of those screws are not acceptable in my opinion and I am only a home owner/non professional carpenter. This connection WILL fail! Maybe not tomorrow but when the homeowner least expects it and maybe has a cookout with guests on it, that is when it will fail. I may be wrong and talking out my ass for lack of knowledge but in 2019 as I watch this can not be code or even acceptable for a do-it-yourselfer. Going to complete the video and then read comments and I hope others agree. I do appreciate you taking the time to make this video however.
@61spindrift5 жыл бұрын
finished the video and caught where you say your also beam to post...so spoke to soon. Still believe this could be not to code in most area's especially the beam design. Again thanks for taking the time to make this video.
