Diy disc sander using broken garden water pump. - Making adapter to use angle grinder pads -

Idea in this video, is to show how to make an adapter that allows one to use angle grinder backings with diy disc sander. This makes possible to change backing harder, smaller or softer if needed. Sander runs at 2800-3000rpm speed. There's a typing mistake on the video, 5000 supposed to be 3000.

And that's exactly what you didn't show properly maybe due to lower light levels. Another thing I'm thinking is whether 3000rpm is high enough for sanding. Doesn't the motor slow down when workpiece applied with some pressure. Making adapter is useful knowledge since I also have a 2850rpm water pump motor. Thx anyway.

Good recycling , I have similar motor and fitted it with m14 stub to hold sander disk or wire brush from grinder pump motors very are very handy also used one for simple belt grinder Keep up the good work

Nice idea indeed, I just bough one of those Bosch bench drills. It sounds terrible on the video!! Is it just the sound recording? I am worried now they are not a good machine now hearing that terrible noise!!

I think my microphone is set too sensitive, and speeding up video makes it sound much worse. It makes noise, but its not so bad at all.

Thanks buddy. I think it will be mostly used for tidying parts after cutting. I can place it next to me when making cuts with angle grinder, and then clean edges without need to change wheel to grinder.

Yep. I keep it little loose and usually spin it just to get it to go straight. In this case, i made a 20mm deep hole, and only 7mm needed to be threaded, so risk of breaking a tap was minimal.

moi tuomas! you know i always pick something from your videos and lately i´m working late and later and it seems everything makes more noise, or i´m just getting old (both :)) the induction motor makes almost no noise compared to a universal one, i did not knew pumps were so high rpm i´ll try to find one and make a grinder for my tungstens (yup i´m dipping now... told you was getting old). paper trick is a w e s o m e too. thanks for sharing. peter ps: is moi moi for good bye or i just heard wrong from the tv?

Thanks Peter. Yep its actually funny that Finns use same words to say hello and goodbye. Similar word with "moi" is "terve", it can be used to say hello or goodbye too. Personally i use words " Moro ", " Moikka " or " Heippa"

Cool trick with the tap in the DP! @¿@ Tapping a grade 8 SHCS is no easy feet...been there done that Kinda, with many "Binks" ;-P Think the spiral taps make a big difference. Great repurpose of the pump and novel disc approach. Would think the sponge pad would get too hot with the metal though...but cheap enough for light work. Amazing fabrication of the table supports and flat surface! Thanks for the idea, been wanting to build a 10" stand alone! Hat Tip, ~PJ

Thanks buddy. That's not a sponge pad. Its "semi flexiple" with rubber body. About 3mm thick from the surface is soft, otherwise its hard. Those are intented for sanding mildly curved metal surfaces before electro polishing. Of course one can get those over heated, but i have managed to melt ones only when sanding down welds that are still hot.

Btw. Now i noticed. There's a sponge pad at the beginning, ( red 125mm ) but the one that's been installed is different. ( Yellow 150mm ) I just used one that's near my hand, for demonstration, and that was a sponge pad. 🙂

The TÜV in me sagt nein. I am worried by 1) the rest being mounted in drilled plastic 2) strong forces being done on that drilled-through nut, especially when grinding towards the edge

Of course you are. 😄

But, seriously. Axle goes 25mm inside the adapter made from M14 bolt, Axle leans against sides of the bolt from that whole distance. There is now stress against the M8 thread. Adapter is as strong as is the original axle. And with this kind of sander, using high pressure would be stupid, also unnecessary. It just ruins the sanding papers. There is many different grade of plastic. Used in boats, cars, motorcycles, tools. Angle grinder, or hand drill body is made from plastic...
