A man after my own heart. I really enjoyed your "workings out" with this. I'm just about to buy my first TD5 engined vehicle after a lifelong bad habit of RV8's and a career as a Restoration engineer (prewar cars and classic motorcycles). Looks like you have a new subscriber. Thanks for the video

Brilliant vid, just bought another disco td5,(even though I hated the last one due to its issues!) and had a lack of power and a misfire, had a few things in pieces today and had the dreaded oil in ecu plug prob but the last owner had a new ecu fitted so just cleaned it up and decided to give up for today, then came across this video and thought I’d just try linking the waste gate control valve out and what a difference! Time to order a new one. Thank you

On the waste gate modulator, check the wiring on the plug. Mine had fused together and was causing problems. It gets damaged by the power steering pipes.

Great video and looks like I can get more out of my TD5. Will look in to it/

Epic thanks for this. Just picked up a disco and its pretty gutless. Given me a starting point, thanks man
@vintagesteelgarage2 жыл бұрын
Could also be the waste gate stuck slightly open. They have a habit of sticking. Bit of wd40 and manually excerise should do the trick. Disconnect the linkage off the actuator first.

@@vintagesteelgarage I most certainly will. The car has been standing outside most of its life, with long periods not driving so could easily have corroded

Thanks for the video, I’ve been experiencing the same symptoms for the last few months so I’m hoping a new valve boost control unit will solve the problem.

Thanks for your video. I noticed my 1998 TD5 Disco had this modulator taken out of line. The turbo has a pipe direct to the one you showed at the bottom part of the engine and I always wondered why? It seems to run fine, apart from getting wastegate modulator errors on the Hawkeye, so I have just left it was it was because I wasn't too sure why it had been routed without the modulator in line or even what the modulator did. It seems that the turbo runs ok, no popping and occasionally you can hear the slight whistle from it in the lanes / single track road and it always seems to have plenty of poke (for a TD5 lump lol)…. I think after seeing your explanation and also that this is a common way for older set ups, I'll just leave it without the modulator and ignore the Hawkeye error message. My theory is, if its not connected to the modulator anyhow, the Hawkeye will always show up a error. I don't seem to get any problems and she still averages about 22mph (which is book standard) around town and a small amount of A road driving, but seeing your video has reassured me, in a way, the modulator is just something extra in line to go wrong if that makes sense. Thanks again, top video.

nice explanation, do you know where i could get the small pipe that comes out of the actuator (inlet pipe i think its called) my one seems to be melted on from over the years. 😅

I would imagine ebay, search for turbo actuator vac hose

Awesome video, I’ve got my TD5 and not sure if it’s been hosted slightly I think it might’ve but I’m wanting more boost and don’t have a gauge or anything like that what could I safely do adjusting the wastewater without wanting to blow something on the motor or is it probably gonna be fine just something to look out for?
@vintagesteelgarage3 жыл бұрын
I think max boost td5 will take without mods is about 21psi

hi great video ,i have same trouble, can i ask what size pipe/Length i need to do the bypass to the wastegate cheers
@vintagesteelgarage3 жыл бұрын
To be honest I can't remember. Think it was 3mm internal bore. It's probably sold in 1 m lengths which should be ample
@tombeach85624 жыл бұрын
Do you still need to adjust the wastegate after bypassing or is it purely the air pressure overcoming the spring?
@vintagesteelgarage4 жыл бұрын
Just air pressure overcoming spring. But best to ensure wastegate working properly. Most are seized due to hot exhaust gases and carboned up
@tombeach85624 жыл бұрын
Vintage Steel Garage thankfully mine is totally free, going to just bypass the modulator and leave it that way I think, seems to go better that way 😂

So just to clarify mate to bypass the modulator you take the pipe from the Inter cooler onto the waste gate actuator?

Great video. I run both of my td5s at18psi as any thing over 19psi ecu will make it misfire time protect the engine. A bit better boost will Make a massive amount of different to power and fuel economy

This video was epic. Have a really good feeling this is the issue with my disco 2. Only taken me two years to realise… I do have one question though, what is the point of the waste gate modulator, like what does it actually do if the waste gate already modulates the pressure. Also how can the modulator fail, perhaps get clogged with sut from the exhaust manifold/turbo?
@vintagesteelgarage2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for great feedback . This website has a good explanation of modulator function. www.discotd5.com/td5-tuning/wastegate-modulator-operation

i have a td5 and my turbo doesnt seem to kick in untill 2000/2500 would the modulator cause this ?

Could be. You can simply bypass it to test.

Needle on boost gauge bouncing cos your tapped in to the exhaust side... should be on intake side also you wont get true boost pressure on exhaust side... i run mine at 22psi and no probs at all in last 2 years and done 30k miles...
