Rev Limiter Mishap! What Did We Break?

After taking our 63 Falcon Futura Hardtop to it's first grand champion autocross race and competing in the top 3 for most of the event I pushed it a little too hard on the rev limiter on the final day during the 3S challenge and hurt our 5.0 engine. The time has come to tear in to it and see what damage we did and see if we can fix it. We are also going to upgrade to stiffer valve springs for more rpm capability, install a 7 speed delay modern wiper motor kit from ‪@SummitRacing‬ and a new blower motor. Then take her out for a drive to test out her rpm limit and do a burnout!

This video had some great comedic moments featuring everyone, from Wa’s the headband’s keeping my ears warm, Ralphie’s deadpan delivery while Josh is pulling out the heater box, Squeeze’s check in with a here and showing off the latest painting, to you and Marge dropping that piece only for it never to be seen again. Great rebuild on this motor and it was a smart idea to shut’er down before you really hurt the motor Josh, have to say she sounded really nice once you got it back together. And think this was the first time in a long time that Squeeze opted for a sausage, engine heating it was a smart idea. And think granny may be going a little blind as well as deaf, she’s sniffing out family members a little more with each video and her rubbing up against Josh was another hilarious moment. Can’t wait to see more done on that Galaxie Wagon and of course the rest of the fleet

I love that Falcon. Nicely done man! When I’m over the road and sitting for long periods at a time in the winter, I usually lay canned food on my turbo. Works perfectly and keeps you from having to dirty up clean dishes unnecessarily.

Back in the 80's there was very few aluminum heads available and the ones that were would cost about $2000 bucks, and of course that was a lot of money back then. So we would take and grind our cast iron heads and intake to match so there was no interruptions in the air flow. It was called port matching and that would give us a good amount of extra hp at redline. With new technology today it's all built into the manufacturer's specs. Love your show Sleeperdude!

When installing the valve collets, I used to use a flat blade screwdriver with grease on the end as I'm too clumsy to hold the little bits. Always worked well for me 👍

My Falcon had a vacuum drive wiper motor with a fuel pump with vacuum assist. I don’t remember the model year. I have never seen,before or after, a fuel pump with vacuum assist. You guys rock. Happy New Year 🎉

Tech tip~ Always grease your keepers so they're sticky. Vaseline works. Sticks keeper to screwdriver head, sticks to valve stem, makes it harder to drop, easier to fit.

Wawa's really good on the piano. I love seeing that. Look on her face when she and Ralphie went along for the test run and you got on it - she is definitely a car girl. Also - the wiper bezel must be '64-66 from what I saw online, those appear to be how the new switch is supposed to work. Same as early Mustang.

Hey sleeper dude! Love your show! Noticed you having back problems! I’m a 63 yr old dude and I would recommend you get what I have been using for over 15 years! I have an inversion table? It actually teeter hang up! And has helped me in many occasions some days it only takes 5 minutes some days 20 to 30! But it really helps!! Just a thought!!!!

Josh to help center my intake gasket and the intake I used some treaded rod and cut it to 2 1/2 inches and placed them at each corner. This keeps the gasket in placed and guides the intake manifold into proper position. Put in two bolts in on each side of the intake then unscrew the treaded rods. Works every time.

Another is the soft rope method. Put the piston at the bottom and feed a soft nylon rope down the spark plug hole. Put a breaker bar on the crank and hold tension with a bungee cord. It works when you are in a pinch. I've done it many times.

That's why I always use bearing grease a little dab on the keepers when I do the valve springs it helps to keep her stick to your fingers and the valve stem I know you know this already but I thought I'd throw it out there

I am a big fan of Falcons, Darts, and Novas. This first-generation Falcon is a true race car now. It would be nice to see it on a road course on a practice day. Changing the differential gear ratios can be good for autocross. Once a month you need to clean up the shop and organize all the hand tools.

Man, it's so good to see that thing up and running again (even better than before)! That idle chop sounds sooo good, and it just loves to rev now. The working wipers and a working heater is a BIG improvement in itself.😉The next major improvement for performance, and likely better fuel mileage, would be a Holley 4 bbl. EFI setup! That falcon from the factory probably had a two speed vacuum operated wiper. A useless thing when accelerating as the vacuum would go away and the wipers would stop. I remember those horrible things.
