This is a great video: clear, quick, and to the point! Thanks so much. But I can't help but think about how this multi-step change is considered an easy plug change today. I long for the days, thirty or forty years ago, when you didn't have to remove anything but the plug boots themselves to change a set of spark plugs. I'm getting old.
@4DIYers6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I totally agree... I have an 84 car where I can access the plugs extremely easily, then my daily driver needs the boost pipe removed (which is tricky on it's own), you need to manoeuvre a couple covers out, and remove the coil packs.

The early 00's Chevy ls v8's are still just a boot on the plug and those suckers are a nightmare. Constantly end up tearing the lead and having to buy another set. At least with the coil packs I've never had one "stuck" to the spark plug.

can you tell me which type of spark plug you recommend for a 2007 dodge Dakota Laramie V8 4x4 with 48,000 miles? thanks!
@4DIYers7 жыл бұрын
For this particular truck, OEM replacement was copper (can't remember the brand). But as a generalized standpoint I've always ran platinum plugs in everything I've owned, specifically Bosch multi ground electrodes. Platinum still has good performance, but not better than copper, although they do last longer and the multi ground electrodes give more than one path for least resistance during a spark. Bosch is just a personal preference, I've been happy with their products.
@teakertown7 жыл бұрын
4DIYers ..oh thanks for your reply. my brother in law has been helping me and he helped me replace them the other night...he recommended the OEM which is champion copper so that's what we put in. I was so proud of myself because I've never done that before and I know close to nothing about cars. I am going to learn as much as I can now because I was told I needed my catalytic converter replaced becuz of the code but I think it was just the spark plugs (they were worn down up to 0.055 inches)...and I have to rely on my own accumulated knowledge now. why can't the specialists figure it out?
@4DIYers7 жыл бұрын
No problem :) Awesome to hear, we've all started somewhere and once you build up those skill it's definitely well worth it! Worn plugs will definitely cause poor performance and if too excessive will not fully burn a mixture. Catalytic converter codes are not usually good, they can be quite costly to replace. But if it was a poor mixture issue, then that code may have been more specific to an O2 sensor. So the ECU wasn't able to lean out the mixture enough and the exhaust gases were too rich.
@teakertown7 жыл бұрын
4DIYers ...I don't understand all of that but I will try to get my brother in law to interpret that for me..lol.....I also just put in a can of Seafoam fuel system cleaner into the gas tank for the first time. do you think I Shud also use a catalytic 🐈 cleaner in the gas tank soon? thanks
@4DIYers7 жыл бұрын
Spark from the spark plug needs to be strong enough to ignition the air and fuel mixture in the combustion chamber to create an explosion. If it's too weak, the explosion will not become hot enough to fully burn that mixture. Therefore on the exhaust stroke, those fumes will contain excessive fuel which passes by the O2 sensor. The O2 sensor will read that as a rich mixture (too much fuel) and throw an error (check engine light). An injector cleaner is a good idea. However there is nothing that will clean a catalytic converter as it's at the end of the system and is there to burn off fuel exiting into the exhaust. People have removed them and cleaned them, soaking them in a solvent. But I wouldn't think it's needed in your situation.

I followed this verbatim. Dakota ran great and MPG boosted but the next day it stalled at a red light. It seems to stall randomly now & Rpm looks like it’s struggling. Anyone have any ideas what I f’d up?
@4DIYers3 жыл бұрын
Almost sounds like a misfire, first place I'd start is with the coils. An electrical connector may not be seated correctly. Or you could even have a bad plug. If a cel is present, scan the codes too.

How many coils would I need for a 4.7 if I want to change all of them?
@4DIYers6 жыл бұрын
8, one per cylinder. Typically these coil packs last for a very long time, so you may just have failing instead of all. They can usually be tested with a multimeter doing a resistance test while off the vehicle. I believe these may also have boot replacements, so if the coil is good, just replace the boot instead.
