In this video i fix my bent driveline with a $19 piece of 2" .120 wall DOM tube. I also beef it up by sleeving the tube and install a new U-joint to freshen it up. Getting ready for my trip to King of The Hammers next week.

I’m glad you talked about the driveline being offroad only. Even the best builds needs to balanced for high speed use.

To be honest I normally cringe at the idea of people building or re-tubing their own drive shafts. Mostly because I know how difficult it is to get everything right even with the proper equipment and experience. You did a good job though, well done. And thank you for mentioning the part about it being off road only and the fact that you can disengage your hubs, that is an important detail. Welding your own drive shaft is not for every application but when it is applicable, this is an excellent demonstration of how to do it. Great video all around. PS that's a nice looking drive shaft you started with ;) Subscribed.

Ha, thanks. It took me 5 year to bend it, so I am impressed with it only being .120 wall. The only other thing I forgot to mention in the video which I added a post to the community section of my page was about phasing the yokes.

I have done hundreds of them. If you use a couple of "V" blocks, roll that DOM in them and use your dial indicator, you an figger out where to take them to get them really straight ;) Rock On!

It’s usually a good idea to have the yoke on on end and mark a straight line from the center of the cap to the other end to make sure it is in phases. In your application it probably won’t matter if it’s a half a spline off. But if everything else is true enough to take it to get balanced it’ll be worth doing

Awesome, I extended my front shaft when I did aw4 swap because it was too short(trans was longer) I ended up buying an extra female end and fused it with the old one to make it a few inches longer. it held up till i sold that axle/shaft

Since the slip side is short and down by rocks you could've but welded that inner tube to the end of spline part then slipped it into big tube. But then your locked in on straightness Also a old drive shaft guy use to those a big hand full of dirt in his shafts so they will self balance as it vibration flings out the dirt moves to balance it out

The measurements you took with your calipers @3:37 must've been all over the place. With the body of the driveshaft on two v-blocks on a thick piece of glass you could start to really to get some more precise measurements going. All in all, good job considering this was all done with handtools in the garage. I'm also guessing that at crawling speeds the phasing might not be so crucial. One of the spline's clocking will surely be close enough for it not to be the end of the world. You might put more intermittent load into the u-joints themselves, time will tell how they fare. Keep us updated, KOH will be a good worst case situation test, I hope it holds!

Thanks, unfortunately I forgot to mention that in the video. I was able to pull the slip yoke off the splines and put it back on “in phase” since it is not balanced.

It looks like it’s out of phase which would be a problem even for a trail Jeep. Hopefully it was just the camera angle.

I couldn't tell, and it is worth mentioning, did you phase the yokes? The first driveshaft that I built was out of phase and it was terrible.

Good luck with that... the company's that build drive shafts go beyond making sure they are straight they also make sure they are balanced. I bet you will have a major vibration to the point it will me tough to drive.

On my rear shaft I just cut off a 1310 yoke, shortened 2 inches and replaced with a 1350 yoke, installed the driveshaft into my WJ and used the Transfer case and rear axle as a makeshift lathe. Mounted my magnetic dial indicator and took some time to dial in the runout, tack welded it and took it off to final weld. zero vibrations up to 75 or so on a WJ with superduty axles.
