Today we're using dry ice to make delicious soda slushies! You already know what happens when you drop dry ice into water, but what happens when you drop soda into dry ice? And what would happen if someone tried to drink it? Have you ever seen dry ice soda drinks before?
We’ve seen experiments where you can make homemade soda pop, but we wanted to know if it was possible at home, if it’s easy, and if it tastes good. We’ve performed some cool dry ice experiments in the past and in this video, we're just experimenting if it is possible to make great tasting carbonated slushie drinks on our own. We dive into the chemistry of dry ice.
This interesting homemade dry ice experiment is perfect for those wanting to try some cool experiments with this cool element: dry ice drinks, dry ice food, cool things to do with dry ice, DIY dry ice experiments, carbonated slushie drinks, DIY soda slushies, DIY slurpees, dry ice desserts, how to make carbonated ice, homemade carbonated drinks that taste good, how to make dry ice, carbonated ice cream, how to make soda, dry ice experiments, DIY soda, DIY soft drinks, and at home experiments.
If you want to test something creative and entertaining or do an activity such as: science experiment, STEM project, STEM science experiment, science fair project, science fair experiment, or a fun weekend project...watch the video to learn more.

Mixing dry ice with soda doesn’t mean you’ll turn it fizzy. For that, you need to pressurize the co2 so it can dissolve in the soda, otherwise it’s just gonna evaporate in the air...
@Mezmorizorz
@Mezmorizorz 6 жыл бұрын
Yep. What you're doing here is bubbling a lot of gas through the soda, and when you do that you're getting to the equilibrium CO2 content. Fizz is CO2 leaving solution, and CO2 won't leave solution rapidly at or near equilibrium. And thinking about it more, I'm not entirely sure that solids can really dissolve CO2 well enough to do this. Trapping it is easy enough, but that's not the same thing. If they can, your best bet is doing it in a pressure chamber filled with CO2.

I think you're doing it wrong! Liquids can't be carbonated under normal pressure at that temperature. You need to find a way to pressurize it while mixing it together. I suggest to put a mixing drone in a bowl, all of them inside a pressure chamber. First, mix in regular soda and some powdered dry ice. Next, find a way to mix it without your hands! Then, put it all in a pressure chamber and crank up the pressure. What I'm thinking is to use that lab equipment with the magnetic stirer, I forgot its name (the one you put a magnet pill inside a conical flask, then out that on the base since the base itself have magnets that will make the pill stir). But I'm not sure if there's a non-metal pressure chamber out there...

Is it even possible to carbonate basically ice??
@danbodine7754
@danbodine7754 6 жыл бұрын
Um, you can't dissolve CO2 into a solid. Even with water a close to freezing CO2 is not very soluble. If you increased the pressure to manage to get some dissolved, it would just fizz out once you released the pressure.

I had a chemistry professor tell us that co2 (and other gassses in general) dissolve a lot better the colder it gets. So the reason there is no fuzz could be because the co2 was cold enough to dissolve all of the co2 to the point where it wasn’t escaping the slush.
@Zahaqiel
@Zahaqiel 6 жыл бұрын
You should probably try blending the dry ice with the soda together (although you'd need the hole in the blender cup to be higher so that there's no liquid leakage). The semi-pressurised state inside the cup may result in higher levels of carbonation in the final slushie. Plus you're more likely to get even boiling off of the dry ice powder.

I have 4 ideas that I think are going to be pretty cool! :) Please try them! 1. Grind up some sparklers and make homemade thermite 2. Put some lithium in a divot in a block of dry ice with some water and see if it will burn 3. Run a ridiculously large amount of electric current through some light bulbs in a series circuit and make them simultaneously pop 4. Put a stun gun or some electric current near a metal spinning fan blade

Well, cool idea, but the problem is, the fizz you usually have in sodas is carbonic acid that is bound in the liquid while dry ice is just frozen carbondioxide, so you won't be able to get any fizz off of that sadly, but you could try to keep as much fizz from the soda itself by pouring it in very gently. I guess that's also why the last try had more fizz since you added the soda directly into the dry ice instead of pouring it into a cup first and then into the dry ice. But a cool idea to make an instant-slush and it will definitely come in handy during the summer. :)

So there is one simple principle that keeps you from having any carbonation in the slush. There is a graph called a solubility table, and (for water) nothing can dissolve at 0 degrees C or 100 degrees C. When you froze the jarritos, the CO_2 precipitates out, because again, nothing dissolves in frozen water. The only "fizz" left is just gas trapped in the molecular structure of frozen water.

When you shake/stir the soda, the fizz escapes the soda and your left with little to no fizz. This also can happen from a chemical reaction, causing the soda to bubble rapidly, leading to the carbon dioxide escaping from the soda. Try a way that won’t aggravate the soda itself.

Eh, English probably isn’t the native language based on the name, and how would you guess to spell those words if you didn’t know. If it was an English speaking adult, then it’d probably be worth mentioning.

You should use a small electric coffee grinder for the dry ice and reduce it to a fine powder. Then add 3 or more sodas to that until you reach slushy consistency. The rapid freezing combined with the amount of soda might give you the result you are looking for.

Perhaps the reason that you weren’t able to fully carbonate the drink may be because there was not enough pressure to to infuse much carbon dioxide into the it. Next time, you could put dry ice directly into the drink and seal it off (With the risk of a dangerous explosion).

I think the best way to get a slushie, is to get a metal bowl and place some dry ice underneath it. That why the soda never comes in contact with dry ice and you can take the bowl off and on , if it's getting to cold.

easy way to keep the fizziness.. step1: get two bowls (both metal) 2:put liquid nitro in one 3:put other bowl with soda above it and stir as the frosty bottom of the second bowl slushifies the soda.

You should have made a liquid nitrogen slushie then add dry ice in it and see if it gets fizzy because that what was I was thinking you were going to do

I think the stirring is what removed the carbonation from the soda. Maybe if you found a method of distributing the temperature WITHOUT stirring. That is the common factor with both dry ice and liquid nitrogen soda experiments.

To make the soda fizzy with dry ice you have to dissolve it under pressure. Put it in a (very strong!) glass jar or bottle with the soda and screw the lid on, and then let it completely dissolve

@Splinter48708

The dry ice is much hotter than the liquid nitrogen. Therefore, you would have nitrogen gas building pressure up and eventually, the sealed container would rupture causing either rapid decompression if you're lucky, or explosive decompression where the container is converted into potentially deadly shrapnel.

If you want to keep the "fizz" in the soda you need to freeze it to a slush while still under pressure. This can be done by repeated dipping or spraying LiN on the outside of a soda bottle and then breaking the ice away from the interior of the bottle by hitting it on a surface. (The only real limiter being it needs to be a plastic bottled soda)

I have an idea. Mix some concrete in a mould and put it in the vacuum chamber for 1 day at least. Compare it's compressive strength with normally casted one.
