Off-Grid Air Heater using a cast iron dutch oven, a 'camp stove heating over' (the cylinder) and some sand. powered with liquid fuel. looks cool. lots of heat. easy diy. the sand holds (and radiates) the heat for hours. 3 fuels tested. note: the top 'doubles' as a stove burner (boils water in only 3 mins). for indoor or outdoor use.
note: the main part of the video goes to the 5:35 mark. then from 5:35 onward i show the "progression" of the project (including how it all started, and several early models of the unit).

Fascinating! I've encountered all of the Parts for this heater but would never have thought to combine them. This why I've watched and taken notes of Years. Fan compatible ? THANK YOU AGAIN.

I know you are an expert and I will never doubt your skills and engineering but please be careful bro. That methanol can get out of control in a blink. All that being said, this heater I'm actually going to build. This one seems super efficient. Thanks brother for helping us fight what's coming.

What an excellent video format. I'm usually F-FWDing to just get to the point..thinking, "just let me see everything you used, I can figure it out myself". You immediately showed every component you used and how, without a bunch of over-explanation of the obvious.. so much better than a 20 minute, camera all over the place video, showing 5 minutes of actually meaningful info. Well done. Everything u need to see and hear, with results - no waste. SO appreciated 😎👍

yes, since the base of the flame is super hot, it heats the sauce cup and sand very fast. (the temp test i did was after just 15 minutes). if you run it an hour the sand temp can double and even triple.

Very cool. Make sire that you only use fuels that do not leave soot on the metal. If it is leaving soot on the metal then it is also polluting the air you’re breathing. For another project idea, try modifying an oil lamp. You can have the sand thermal mass around the clear glass tube. The flame would also be adjustable. Make sure you only use compatible fuels though so you don’t overheat the glass or have a flame in the fuel basin below the wick

Very interesting and useful inventive development. I've heard the best stone for thermal mass is soapstone from Pennsylvania but I don't know if it can be obtained as sand and it probably doesn't matter even if it can.

I think a copper band going over the flame and underneath the sand would help heat the sand faster

Thanks for sharing your creations. Question. Roughly how much alcohol for how much run time? You said about 2/3 full. But the size of sauce cups vary. And later you made a reference to burning at 25 minutes. But it appeared that was mid burn. Can you give an idea of length of burn vs quantity of fuel? Thanks.

you can also take and preheat it on induction burner give the sand head start on heat retention it may last all night (the heat radiation that is)

Have you tried this using canned heat/sterno fuel? I'm wondering if this would provide the same results. If you put a flat cast iron griddle on top you could cook on it or put a wood stove fan on it to circulate the heat as well.

hi. i'd say the bio-ethanol is the cleanest. only puts off a little carbon dioxide and water vapor when it's burned. (but no smoke, odor or fumes though and the carbon dioxide output is very small - only about the same as having one extra person in the room). to find that fuel just search for 'indoor ventless fireplace fuel'.

Where would I find the slotted cylinder? Is there a link?
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 5 ай бұрын
hi yes, you can find that along with the 2 quart dutch oven on amazon. the dutch oven is an 'amazon basics' 2 quart one and the 'cylinder' (the camp stove heating cover) is a 'bulletshaker' camp stove heating cover. (amazon has other brands of those too). here's a link to the 'bulletshaker' www.amazon.com/Camping-Heater-Warming-Heating-AdvancedShop/dp/B0768H9BJQ/ref=sr_1_2?crid=EVIO0D3NWJ9Y&keywords=bulletshaker&qid=1704568806&sprefix=bulletshake%2Caps%2C371&sr=8-2
