When dividing supermarket hebs, wash the roots by swishing them back and forward in a bucket of water, gently does it! You can seperate the whole pot up without breaking a single root, just takes a few minutes and a bit of care...Steve...😃

When I start my beds, I always add a bunch of cut up sticks and branches too. After that I add straw, and horse poop. Then my layer of good dirt. The break down is slow, but boy o' boy, do I get the earthworms! And my garden always goes crazy! I sure love your videos!

It still amazes me that i can grow "western" herbs here, in a huge coastal tropical city. Thyme, rosemary oregano and mints are thriving here, with the right treatment. They grow easily on higher altitude, but for coastal regions you need to avoid them from direct sunshine. So i put them under the tree or next to a wall. By the way i just found your channel and love it, thank you so much Ben.

Thanks for the suggestion Holly. Perennial herbs, that grow year after year - rosemary, lavender, thyme, sage, marjoram, mint, chives - can be planted at any time of year and don't require any special care to overwinter. Then fleshier herbs like basil, cilantro/coriander are sown during the growing season for that season.

Bought compost is a big expense and it's also just fun to make use of every last bit from the garden. 💚

Rosemary, Thyme, Basil, Oregano, Coriander, Sage, Parsley - all of these are welcome to grow anywhere in my garden, and I particularly propogate and plant Rosemary (small bushy variety), Thyme as a ground cover, and Basil to attract bees (I have some kind of perennial one that grows long flowers). Herbs are great to grow and use fresh, and considering the prine you have to pay for them at the shops, I think everyone should have some growing

I must say I've been binge watching and just soaking up all the knowledge and tips Ben! Thank you for all you and (Rosie) put into your channel and to your family for allowing us to spend so much time with you. :) I recently planted some herbs along the sides of my tomato bed. I chose several and I must say the Lemon Thyme, and the peppermint are a couple strong favorites right now. I haven't even eaten any yet but the scent is simply intoxicating. I also purchased some Monarda, chives, another type of Thyme, and some spearmint and even Lavender. Oddly enough I've never cared for the scent of lavender, but it was such a lovely plant, I couldn't resist and the scent is supposed to help keep the "baddies" at bay. I live in Central (NW Florida) and am very enthusiastic about gardening (both veg and flower). Thank you, thank you, thank you again. I am still working out who is my favorite gardener on your channel though, you or Rosie... :). P.S. I also plan to get your garden planner so I can "Crack on with it " in a bit more organized way. God bless you and yours Ben and happy gardening!

This has some very good ideas. In the US zone 6, parsley and basil are considered annuals and we have to replant every year. but I have found if I let parsley go to seed they come back. I planted parsley 5 years ago and still harvesting parsley, but they get about 3-4 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide so there is not enough space in this herb bed between parsley. I also got volunteer lemon basil this year and looks like volunteer Thai basil as well. I find that oregano will spread just like mint and pot it into bottomless pot like mint. you mentioned lemon balm which is lovely in tea but it spreads just like mint, so it also is in bottomless pot in herb bed. I love these videos and almost always learn something new. I grow borage from seed and find that it resows like mad.

You are apparently lucky enough to live in an area without gophers, moles, etc. I built my first raised beds, only to have subterranean creatures move in from below. They did not like potatoes, so much so that they shoved them to the surface to get rid of them. I had to empty the beds and add hardware clothe (wire mesh) at the bottom, which is much easier to do before you place the bed rather than later. You should always advise people about gopher-proofing your raised beds. Other than that, thanks for your videos, very helpful.

Wish I could grow rosemary and thyme throughout the year. It freezes outside and inside I can't keep it going. Just a note about oregano; it can be invasive similar to mint. It is one hardy herb and it keeps appearing in the flower bed. Also chives, have the garlic chives all over the asparagus. I like the winter interest of the flower heads, but think I will need to trim them. What variety of oregano has a pungent flavor? Great video, have to start one of these beds.

You could certainly start now, planting hardy, more resinous herbs such as rosemary (and thyme and sage), as well as mint. You could also look to sow coriander, which may just grow before winter, but I suspect it may be a touch too late now (outside at least). Basil would need to be started off in spring.

Hi Ben do these herbs need any protection to get them through the winter? What about herbs grown in plastic planters? Thanks
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg Жыл бұрын
Most of the herbs are hardy, including all the perennial herbs such as rosemary, lavender, sage, thyme, marjoram and chives. Non-hardy herbs include basil. Coriander should overwinter in mild areas. If you are growing herbs in plastic I would move them closer to the house, or somewhere somewhat protected, so the roots don't freeze solid too often.

Hi Graham. Epsom salts have magnesium, which may help. But I suspect this is just a natural reaction to a general shortage of nutrients. I'd be more inclined to apply a general-purpose feed, perhaps using something like a liquid seaweed feed to give plants an immediate boost.

I sourced mine through Facebook local/marketplace. I guess you could try sites like Gumtree or Craigslist too. The pallet collars are usually heat treated, simply to remove any lurking bugs/pests. This involves no chemicals so no risk of any leaching. You could treat the wood with a non-toxic preservative before using, but they should last at least three to four years as they are.

Any tips on lessening the damage from Leafhoppers for herbs? I live in Leeds and they're everywhere! They're always turning my luscious green herb leaves into a yellow/brown mottled mess. Most info on them suggests that they are most prevalent in the US but they are definitely present here in the UK.

I think they are about in the UK. This article seems to offer a few useful suggestions. It seems yet more fleece/insect mesh is one answer. Hopefully they won't make a reappearance this year. www.thespruce.com/getting-rid-of-leafhoppers-5213564

Thank you, much appreciated! I'll try and encourage as many predators as possible then, and try the sticky traps also, but not leave them out, just brush the leaves to try and get them to jump onto it. Fingers crossed I'll keep them down this year, but they seem very fond of my newly formed Loganberry too so it's a constant battle!

It's not just the mint that can be invasive parsley is too and I have a huge bed of marjoram, DOH! horseradish is the worst offender I would only grow it in a double pot with the outer pot without a drainage hole, when we moved in the previous owner grew it in a standard pot that I couldn't lift because it had massively rooted through, it took three years to get rid of it all. Ben could you post up a list of invasive and non invasive herbs?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting - I didn't realise that about horseradish and will proceed with caution! Mint seems to be the very obvious invasive herb - almost all the others may gradually creep along but can be kept in check relatively easily.

@@GrowVeg I think it depends a little on where the invasive are Growing. Mints and square stemmed herbs tend to be invasive. For me I found that oregano planted by former owner had created a really tough mat over the years. I ripped it up 2 years ago and it still persists by root bits. Seen it up this spring waving at me--Grrrr!

They are usually tantalised, but an treatment with something like Croma of Tiger Kit, will lengthen the life span, but must be non toxic.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 жыл бұрын
Almost all pallets and pallet collars are now heat treated - look for the HT symbol on the pallet stamp. Further treatment with a non-toxic treatment would be advisable, but the collars should still last at least three or four years used as they are.

@@GrowVeg Tantalised is OK as long as it's UC4 spec, that's eco friendly won't harm pets or leach into food crops or water ways, I also use Tiger Kit for extra protection. Ben in the West country you would be lucky to get 2-3 years from collars as they are much thinner than scaffolding boards, we have a warm but damp climate.

@@GrowVeg Many thanks for your reply, very helpful. Perhaps you could do a video sometime on fertilizing/preparing Roses in spring. I have a small number in the ground and some in containers and around this time every year, apart from pruning them, and putting some fresh compost over them I'm not sure what else I should do (if anything) I was thinking of additionally adding organic chicken manure pellets this year. When you say grocery store, are you referring to garden center herb pots as well? Should all herb containers purchased be handled in the same manner?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sandy. I'm referring specifically to grocery store herbs only. They are often sold as clusters of seedlings. Just look at the bottom of the herb/s - if there are lots of stems then you can carefully divide the pot to give several new plants/clusters of plants.

I love "regrowing" things from the grocery store!...potatoes, garlic, celery, spring onions to name a few. Oh, ginger is a fun one. As for that oregano you dug up & separated, been there, done that. This can be done with any member of the mint family, so: any type of mint, oregano, thyme, lemon balm, etc. It's literally impossible to kill the stuff, lol. All of these can be invasive, with sprawling root systems that go down & pop up elsewhere, so I recommend growing these in pots or containers. Definitely grow your culinary herbs near the house(or even indoors) so you won't forget about them when it's time to cook, and so you won't have to go too far to harvest them in a pinch.
@GrowVeg

I have great difficulty growing rosemary although I grow it in a well drained soil with enough sunlight. They always die. I'm willing to have one more go at it and will certainly appreciate if you can assist me.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 жыл бұрын
Rosemary likes full sun and a very well-draining soil. The biggest killer is wet, sodden soil in the winter. It hates having its roots that in wet. So improve your soil or grow it in pots. You say that your soil is well-draining though, so I'm not sure what else could be the problem. Keep the area weed-free and avoid plants being overcrowded. Hopefully they'll come good this time round.
