Primer. Over substrate. Surfacer fill and build surface and fill porosity to be blocked down. Then preferably sealed over before painting. There are some hybrids bit compromise is made with them. So it is actually a primer sealer. But not a primer surfacer.

very nice to see sanding done by hand. no d.a. worse yet when you see someone use a grinder to strip a cars paint off which heats the metal up & slightly distorts it.

If you use a poly strip disc the right way you won't have that issue. You have to move around and do every area in stages. I did my 63 impala this way and didn't warp anything. No different than holding a media blaster in one area for a long time. I think its even safer then blasting when done right and way cleaner.

I strip to the bare metal starting with 320 grit then finer as I go removing any waves & dings. I spent over 80 hours on a Lincoln town car. I use enormous coats. are you aware solid colors appear richer & deeper with more coats? remember what Fred said. "haste makes waste"

If I’m doing a restoration. The process would be. Bare metal, epoxy primer, scuff epoxy for filler, body filler, get flat, urethane primer, base, clear?

I'm having a difficult time nailing down that process as well...then at the end he throws in "polyester primer"...

Polyester primer is not necessary unless your doing the whole car that has a lot of body work done

Pete. If I have a classic car and it has surface rust and some Lil pitting ...I don't understand procedure...I didn't wanna soda blast car and it needs Lil sheet metal work. Not to bad but can I sand whole car down then use v/w method clean metal then apoxy primer whole car or do it in parts....I'm doing whole car and wanna do it myself....any help would be very elpfull to me. Thanks man. Joe

I like to use the Nason select primer it take a bit of time to fully dry but it's its a decent price

if i sandblast or strip something ... i always epoxy 2 light coats . Black or white ..... Then 2k prime 2-4 coats ... 80/180 grit And if u see white or black its time to stop sanding and add filler. Restorations only .... this does not apply to scratch and dent repair.

When you epoxy primer do you scuff it and so with what grit? Before throwing the 2k primer? I've had bad luck of how I had my Oldsmobile primered with the regular down to metal then body filler then primer I've had the paint bubble on it on random spots 2x already in the past 10yrs and I'm trying to figure out how I can better avoid it it's like it had moisture trapped both times both times happened like within 5-10yrs of painting it car stays outside yr around too so trying to see how I can better seal it for next time im thinking im going this epoxy primer route next just thought id ask thanks

@@diyautoschool we used nothing but ppg and ever coat ppg primers all the expensive stuff but i feel it may have been that it was done outdoors under the sun and was worked on for about a month outside until it got painted all the blocking and everything was done under the sun during summer possible condescension? Not sure not doing it outdoors again if I can't help it and it was done by people who do it for a living but it's annoying that I had same results on some small areas both times

The guy who did it said oh its because you leave it outside and I'm like b.s. should last I'm missing something here just trying to figure out how to avoid it next time around by being better quality control by whoever I have do it next that's all

VP2050 , some of the best in the business use it as a standalone primer , it’s a one stop shop

I like Speis Hecker Epoxy primer and their brand of Polyester,then I like Dupont/Exalta Urethane over that,just what I've good results with.

I once pretty much stripped a 1976 Lincoln town with 320 wet/dry with a block. the car that had about 6 coats of diamond flare blue down to the metal making it perfectly straight. put about 4 gallons of centari basecoat Clear coat with hardener on it. microfinished it to a mirror finish. when I was a beginner I asked Fred how do I know it is completely his response was you will know. haste makes waste. it took me over 80 hours of sanding it.

Epoxy sealer balls up on your sand paper. VB2050 is a gallon of PPG that is epoxy, sealer, primer and $957 per can. Stir sticks not included unless you ask nice.

If you have to sand your sealer don't use water use wax and grease remover that will eliminate your sandpaper from balling up

Sealer is the last step before you paint you shouldn't have to touch it even with a tack rag

@@timmowatt3028 Dude, it's ok to 300-600 dry, blow, tack & dry. See "Stout Engineering" to complete. Use 3M or Maxtrix depending what is in your area. Cool. Contract Ryan Evans at Kount Counts as well. Pete will use 3M EV every time! Best of luck an add 10% reducer for correct temp to lay smooth. DK, Omaha.
