Definitely going to try this, even though my horses have a natural shine to them but since it is used for like moisturizing and to have a better smooth coat and to kinda heal scabs bug bites; my horses have tons of cuts and scabs so this is perfect because I have searches high and low for one product that benefits both coat conditioning and prevents bug bites and I haven't found a very good one. I have used the show sheen, not that good as you say lauren. Love you lauren, I hope for some more DIYs, I have tried all of yours that you did on myequineaddiction, love them all!!!!

Just be careful with baby oil because if it gets on their pink skin it can make their skin more susceptible to sunburn. :) Everything else in this I love!

I don't think I would add the glycerin, which is the main ingredient of saddle soap and is known to leave a waxy substance on the surface of whatever it's applied to, but I liked the rest of the recipe! Nice video!

I would choose coconut oil instead of baby oil since it's healthier (baby oils is just mineral oil) and because of its small molecular structure it actually absorbs well and doesn't just sit on top. Also, aloe Vera juice is great, as well as lavender oil. The scent of lavender was proofed to be mentally and physically relaxing on most mammals, horses and humans included, so adding some into horse products is great for the horse's mood and hair health and generally it just smells great

This has been a 'to do' for a while.. I have all ingredients and have wanted to save it for summer in a couple of months time when his coat is shorter.. Just a quick question, I had watch the how to make a flyspray on the MyEquineAddiction and was wondering if I added a few of those ingredients in this mix if it would add a fly spray effect? If not I will pop some citronella oil and see how that goes :) Thank you for the video!

This is such a good recipe, I love how natural the whole thing is with such organic and chemical free ingredients. Just also wondering that if this was digested in a small amount by a horse would it have any affect? Is it toxic or poisonous? Obviously it wouldn't be good to like drink, but i mean if it was sprayed on a horse and another horse licked it or bit the horse. Defiantly going to try this anyways, it seems way better than buying something from a shop which has been pumped with chemicals and additives :)

@laurenmckinnon2421

Anna Equestrian The coconut oil is for sure edible, but the rest most definitely shouldn't be consumed in large amounts. I don't think it would be deadly though if another horse tasted it!
@chelseaclaire13
@chelseaclaire13 9 жыл бұрын
There's no such thing as chemical free. A chemical is the makeup of all things both natural and man made. Water is a chemical, coconut oil is a chemical, tea tree oil is a chemical. Chemical is not a bad word and most chemicals are not harmful but necessary for life to exist. (think Oxygen, very important ;) ) I think the appropriate term you are looking for is "toxicant" or "toxin" or a chemical that is known to be harmful or caustic to the skin or body.
@chelseaclaire13
@chelseaclaire13 9 жыл бұрын
I should also add that most "additives" used in both human and equine products are so that the ingredients used mix well together and don't result in any unwanted chemical reactions that could cause irritation. I agree that show sheen isn't great, but they go through great lengths and research to create a product that won't harm your horse! Their entire company relies on the safety of their products, otherwise law suits would be a major issue and they wouldn't be in business.

Be careful with the ratio of oils, especially if you know it's going to be really sunny out, like tanning oil, a high concentration of oils in a coat spray can cause skin burns if in direct sunlight :) great mix though, I can imagine it smelled great!

just one comment all of your ingredients are excellent except the baby oil baby oil is mineral oil and it actually over the long-term will dry your horses coat out so I would find something else to substitute for that I was a hairdresser for 30 years I know.

+Dida Kingston We use it on eight horses daily not a single one has ever had burns. My trainer got this tip from multiple big name pros in the hunter world like Kelley Farmer and Amanda Steege and they wouldn't recommend it if it did their horses damage. In fact the only thing it has done for our horses is make their skin and coat shinier and healthier. Please don't try to tell me incorrect information if you can not even spell correctly. thank you and have a nice day! :)

just a heads up, coconut oil doesn't moisturize. and despite popular belief that the beauty community has unfortunately spread, it's not good for skin or hair either. it might make it soft but it isn't actually doing anything. it sits on the hair shaft. it doesn't soak in. and it blocks moisture from getting in because of that.

Brookette Bryant I usually spray it on after our rides so the next day it's all soaked in. If you're spraying it on before a ride I would just avoid spraying on the saddle area directly because it has so many oils in it. Better to be safe than sorry :)

you can probably skip an ingredient to fit your horses needs if you want. and the coconut oil probably needs to be liquid so that it will stir in better. you can always melt it in the microwave if it's in solid form. hope this helped!
