This is a prototype for a 2 DOF racing simulator. Its purpose is to test feasibility and components. The next stage will be to replace the wooden frame with aluminium profile. I will then upgrade the entire sim to be 6 DOF.

The wooden frame is heavier than what the Ali profile will be. I'm repositioning the motors for more mechanical gain also. The motors aren't doing too much heavy lifting as all the weight rests on the u joint. The motors are really only tiltting the top platform. The movement is simulating gforces by cancelling out the motion in VR. This is NOT chassis movement. F1 cars have very stiff suspension with hardly any chassis pitch and roll. The only other high levels of movement will be due to track gradient

Nice piece of kit dude! But like all motion rig, to show... feel... a force, it must first move toward that position. like at 0:17, to achieve a braking force, the chair must pivot forward so the first thing you feel when you apply the brakes is an acceleration forward. All motion kit are a gimmicks. Well... there are exceptions... the MPI Robotic Motion Simulator is one of them but bring your own barf bag.

Thanks for your comment. This was a prototype that taught me all the basics. It had its problems, too heavy mainly and there wasn't enough mechanical leverage being utilised. If you look at the more recent videos on my channel you will see the latest design which performs much better. It's not 100% the same as in real life, but we do what we can with the tools available to mimic the feelings as much as we can. The brain is very easily fooled, especially in VR

Hey Mike, Impressive work here. I was just wondering, could you consider maybe a more affordable option since the rig is almost 3000 GBP? Mainly here, out of wood, or cheaper actuators, or reduced performance. An interesting idea would to sell a cheaper version where it uses different motors and actuators, and is cheaper, or uses cheaper materials. The catch is that you can buy "upgrade," sets so that you can increase the performance at a later time. For example I have no idea of the costs of componets or the major production cost factor but lets say if you use cheaper actuators and slightly cheaper materials, such as a less durable steel, it could reduce the cost by say 500 pounds. But when you buy a upgrade set and/or replacement parts the cost the same as production, but slightly upmarked than production cost with no free shipping, it would allow for people to slowly put together a better set. You would also profit more as it would be upmarked from production cost and they pay for shipping, but it also allows for people to buy parts when they are improved aswell. This is a concept that would probably be hard to implement, but as your company is unique, it could also have unique solutions aswell.@@mikeyearly

This is awesome work! I do have a question though, is the (and I don't know if I'm using the correct terminology) vertical pitch adjustable? The amount of positive and negative "travel" of the pitch. It seems to be too much for an F1 car, but might be just about perfect for a Rally car, as is. I know that you are "simulating" g-forces, so it needs to be exaggerated a little bit more than reality, but it does seem like it could be tuned a bit more for F1. My question is, could that be set through software and stored so you could just load "F1 car" or "Off Road Truck" while already in the rig, or would adjusting that amount of travel have to be done manually? It doesn't take away from the coolness in any way, it's just a thought that popped into my head when watching. Big time props! I love this work!
@mikeyearly
@mikeyearly 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, all motion can be set for specific cars. You can save presets to quickly change settings to suit the car you're driving. The motion is not mimicking the chassis movement of the car. It is solely simulating the g forces. The amount of travel/tilt is directly linked to the amount of g force you want to feel. If you're racing in a VW Golf you'd want a small amount of motion to simulate a low amount of g force. If you're in an F1 car you want as much motion as your rig will allow in order to simulate the higher G forces. If I dialed down the amount of travel I wouldn't get the g force effect that an F1 car would provide.
@mikeyearly
@mikeyearly 10 ай бұрын
Yeah I didn't explain that very well. Obviously it's not simulating the full extent of g's felt an F1 car, that's impossible. Say the sim can offer a max feeling of 1G, you want that max value to be with F1 cars. So when you accelerate in an F1 car it tilts all the way back. If you were driving a Golf, for example, it would tilt half way back. I was trying to explain that it's relative to the car you're driving.

How do you insert . . . yourself . . . into that? It seems that you could benefit from a bigger base, so the floor, or what could be called, the reality check, wouldn't . . . distract you, by smashing itself against your head. Cheers. P.S. Truly a stunning work, you did right there. As for the experience enhanced by the already super immersive HMD, I only can think of it as being, EXTRAORDINARY.

@mikeyearly
@mikeyearly 10 ай бұрын
The easiest method is to simply turn of head tracking in the quest settings. This disables positional tracking while still allowing the user to look around. I find positional tracking is not required for sim racing, so it's a very simple and effective solution. Disabling head tracking is also an option in the Pico 4 settings, which is the headset I currently use as the resolution, clarity and FOV is much better than the Q2

I've also spent the best part of a year dialing in the motion, to the point it's so accurate it actually helps with motion sickness in VR, as it provides the brain with the movement it expects to feel from what your eyes see.

I am thinking of using an 80/20 aluminum railing for the frame, but I am not sure what specifications I should choose for the motors. My main concern is that I want to upgrade from a Logitech setup to a direct drive wheel with load cell brakes in the future, so I want to make sure the motors I choose will be reliable and capable of handling all of the forces exerted with the added weight of the frame. Also, can't wait to see your update video! Looking forward to it.

@@mikeyearly Just checked it out, looks like a great resource! One additional question that I have is what made you decide to mount the u-joint beneath the seat and the motor arms near the pedals as opposed to the opposite configuration? I found some showcases of 2DOF motion rigs that had the motor arms beneath the seat and the u-joint near the pedals and wasn't sure what the advantages/disadvantages of each configuration were.
@mikeyearly
@mikeyearly 2 жыл бұрын
From a mechanical design point of view the u joint needs to be at the centre of gravity of the top frame with all peripherals mounted and the driver sat in the seat. This can be found by placing the frame on something cylindrical (a metal tube, broom handle, etc) and with someone assisting, move the frame back and fourth until you find the balancing point. That's where the u joint should be. This should naturally fall somewhere just under the seat, and this is where you want it for the most realistic feeling. You'll see in my upcoming update I have repositioned my motors to the rear of the SIM and they connect to the top frame behind the seat just behind my neck. Much more mechanical advantage.

Does your game compensate for your head tilting upwards while accelerating? Or is that not really an issue?

Cancelling the motion of the sim in game is fundamental to a good experience. I made a video about it kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoW6paRsm5eihcksi=O0fN8FTg2UE3MQlI

looks great, maybe its just my feeling, but it seems to me that there is a latency between the game and the seat movement - especially when turning ??

You're 100% correct. This was a very early prototype that I was still experimenting with. I have rebuilt this sim using metal frame and fine tuned the motion, check my channel for the latest vids

very nice work...but, it seems to have some delay...i.e at time 1.36 about, there is almost half second from steering wheel and the roll of the rig. It's only a my impression?
@mikeyearly
@mikeyearly Ай бұрын
Oh yeah lots of delay. I was still learning at this stage and the PID tuning was not good at all. I've come along way in those 3 years and learnt a lot - check out some of my latest videos on my channel of the current rig. It's very responsive

@@mikeyearly thanks...I found your video because I'm thinking on a 2dof rig too. So I'm very interested. I will see your other videos.

Nice........... Do you think this setup would be strong enough for DD Wheel and Loadcell Pedals?
@mikeyearly

Not sure about DD. It's pretty sturdy. This was a prototype I'm in the process of converting to Ali profile

@@mikeyearly using the same dimensions/measurements? I wonder which would weigh more between wood and ali? Hopefully Motion motors can handle extra weight.......... Maybe aluminium would be stronger for DD and Loadcell? Can't wait to see it
@mikeyearly

Wood is cheaper here in the UK, but much heavier. I will be releasing a new vid soon showing the change and the weight differences

I see in your later videos you moved the motors to the back on the rig. Were you not getting enough leverage where you are currently connected?
@mikeyearly
@mikeyearly 2 ай бұрын
Correct, moved for better mechanical leverage
@tsedore28
@tsedore28 Ай бұрын
@@mikeyearly Thanks for getting back. Do you think it would work the same if it was in the front with the higher leverage point? Since the back faces the room I would rather keep it clean.
@mikeyearly
@mikeyearly Ай бұрын
@@tsedore28 yes placement doesn't matter as long as you're maximising the mechanical leverage.
