Hey, guys! In this video I share the basics of how to chalk paint furniture in a rustic, farmhouse style. This gives you the perfect opportunity to thrift furniture with solid bones and make is fit the esthetic of your home. I LOVE the show fixer upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines and have been really gravitating toward farmhouse and distressed home decor. Whether you are painting a dresser, coffee table, chairs, stools, cabinets and more--this is SUCH an easy project. If you haven't worked with chalk paint before, here is exactly how to apply chalk paint with an easy to follow tutorial. My favorite part? You can do it in ONE day and NO standing required. Even on previously stained or finished wood. I hope you enjoy!
SUPPLIES IN THIS VIDEO:
❤️Chalk Paint: I used Valspar color "Kid Gloves" from Lowes. You can also use Annie Sloan and Plaid in the colors of your choice. All great! Here's the Parisian Grey color: amzn.to/2wRxlD1
❤️Chalk Paint Brushes: amzn.to/2wc3x6M
❤️Sand Paper: amzn.to/2vF0Xox
❤️Water-Based Polyurethane Finish (also know as polycrylic): amzn.to/2w3uMjP
Note: you'll notice the Poly linked above is not the can you see in the video, it's only because I was using up what I already had from another project but it's the same thing--Rust-o-leum's Varnathane. It's the finish you want with chalk paint! Especially if your piece is ivory or white, it won't yellow. Amazing staying power on high traffic pieces!

I hope you enjoyed the video! Just want to make sure for those who try the project that you get a Water-Based Clear Polyurethane when you do the top coat. This is also known as a Polycrylic. I call it Polyurethane in the video because it says that on most cans. This polycrylic really stands up well to wear and won't yellow your pieces. I linked it below since in the video I was using an older, unmarked can from another project. Two coats (3 for cabinets) should be good!

Actually, Polyacrylic will give your piece a yellowish tint & change the color slightly. But it is ALWAYS the preferred over Polyurethane, never use Polyurethane with color. Should you paint your piece white, your final coat coverage should be thin, as to limit any yellowing, too much in one area will be noticeable. I have painted & sold 100's of pieces (including my couch) 🤔 so I have a little bit of experience to add a comment. Meanwhile, go for it! Don't be afraid, & if you hate it...who cares...do it again. If not, put your furniture on the street, & I will be happy to scoop it up! :) Great job on the table!!! 👏🤗👍

MONIQUE RAMIREZ So would you recommend not using the wax they they sell by the chalk paint? I actually just started painting my kitchen table today but I haven't got to the waxing part yet.
@moniqueramirez3202
@moniqueramirez3202 7 жыл бұрын
Christina Morris ~ I never 🚫 use any wax. Commerical waxes are mostly cancerous (read the disclosures in small print on their labels). A friend of mine also paints for profit..she uses wax (clear & dark) with a waxing brush. Don't ever wax with your hands unless you have gloves, otherwise its in your skin. Just bcuz it's clear in color, doesn't mean it's healthy for you. Plus who wants to wax every 6-12 months? Not me or my customers, which is why I use Lowe's Valspar Signature Clear Protector (located by the Primers & Cabinet paint). Looks like Nonfat milk in can, but dries clear. If your wanting an antique look, instead of the dark wax, use Lowe's Valspar Antiquing Glaze, my customers love these details for those corners and embellishments, apply straight or watered down (play with it, until your happy). Hope that helps.😉

so glad to see a "quicker" non=wax way to use this stuff. i had no idea what it took to use chalk paint but have a friend who LOVES it... thanks for making this simple to understand and making the video short in length. it's annoying to watch other's paint their pieces at length...THANKS!

I love this piece! I normally don't like the distressed furniture tutorials that I have hunted up in the past because people don't seal the pieces. Usually they paint and sand then say they are done. I love the fact that you actually seal it. I like a smooth gloss finish to the touch with the weathered antique look. But I wasn't sure what to use. Thank you for making a tutorial that I have wanted to see for literally years. Chip and Joanna are so great! My brothers live near them and have seen their work first hand. They take literal trash houses and make treasured homes out of them. What's not to love?! lol. God bless ya'll!

Like the haircut and love the tutorial! I have done an old hope chest that was my grandmother's in chalk paint. Now, moving to a new house next month with a totally different vibe and color scheme. So all my oak bookshelves and china hutch will totally not go! I have been going back and forth between staining some pieces vs. chalk painting. I know I will chalk paint an entryway piece and my hutch! Getting excited and overwhelmed by all the upcoming work!

Kathryn Thanks so much for the tutorial,It turned out SO awesome! Oh and btw I went to my Restore yesterday and they have LITERALLY gone INSANE! Not only was the furniture selection nothing like yours , but the prices were HORRIBLE! They wanted $65.00 for a 30 yr old dollhouse with a broken balcony- yeah...Good luck selling that LOLOL! On the flip side I did end up scoring 4 amazing knobs for a DIY for only .50 cents each and a greeting card for a quarter.

Love it. Like you, I'm a huge fan of Fixer Upper and I love the look of distressed wood so I decided a while ago that I want to paint my 25 year old coffee table, by dining table and china cabinet. I originally was going to use some other brand (more expensive) but after seeing your video I will use the the paint and polyurethane you used. I'm excited to get it started so maybe this weekend I will get the supplies. I have already create my shopping list in my cell phone. You have inspired me. Thanks.

Good morning Kathryn. A cheap way to make chalk paint (or as we call it here Chic paint); mix well 1/2 cup water to 1/4 cup of plaster of paris (with a coupon, it is a steal) then mix into an 8 oz sample of latex paint. My mom and I have been doing this for alittle over a year and it turns out beautifully. It's definitely worth a try! Also, thank you very much for the tip on the Polyurethane Finish because we were using wax and yes, it is a chore. God Bless.
