I prefer the double boiler method, to avoid the stirring till it cools I just put the mixing pan in a bowl of ice water and stir for a short time and scrape the sides of the pan. 5 min max. Only cleanup if the mixing pan which is easy. Start to finish 15 min including cleanup. I like DE.

Hey Kim. I just made my first batch using the double boiler method. I mixed in the double bouler until clear. Next I poured in the DE then moved my (metal) bowl to a bowl filled with ice water. And stirred. I had to remove the bowl from the ice water a couple times to mix in hardened lumps scraped from the sides with the whisk. Within 5 minutes I had cake icing consistency. The big thing was constantly scraping the sides and bottom with the whisk. Since I don't have a blender that will so the job, I thought i would give it a try.

To clean the inside of the blender, use Dawn dish detergent and salt. Coat the inside with detergent, and sprinkle salt into the detergent,, the salt acts as an abrasive. Same for pan used for home made pop corn on stove, the salt will wash away the cooking oil used to pop the corn kernels.

Even faster, and less mess, use microwave and straight sided canning jar. Heat oil and wax (one minute increments) until wax melts into oil when stirred. Add D.E. and stir. Place jar in bowl of ice water while doing remaining blending. Wipe sides and add plastic lid when wax solidifies. Much easier and less clean up. And no blender cleaning or risk of partner disapproval.

Great idea on using the blender. I have thought of making some since Daniel Vilarino's video came out a few years back but your method is easier (safer?). I have already splashed my kitchen with a hot bees wax mixture a few years ago. For those who may not know diatomaceous earth is also called Rotten Stone and Tripoli. The Yorkshire version has pumice and tripoli; it could be the Yorkshire microfine has the pumice left out. I am not sure about Ack's. For a large batch such as yours I think I would use pumice (4F grit) for half and tripoli for the other half. The pumice also breaks down but starts much more aggressive if you start after 220 sanding.

Great, informative video, Kim! I just finished making my own batch of abrasive paste, but did not order supplies from Amazon or go to Wally Martinez (Walmart). Instead, I got my DE from Lowe’s (4# for $9), mineral oil from the drug store next door to Lowe’s and beeswax from Hobby Lobby just up the street. Yeah, I paid a lot more. But I got all my supplies in about an hours time and did not have to wait for Amazon to ship and saved on shipping costs; which probably evens things out since I don’t use Amazon Prime. I am not a fan of Amazon since I like supporting local businesses and feel my money needs to stay local instead of making Bezos richer. How big is to big? But that’s another story and left alone here. Anyway, the abrasive paste works great and smells good too.

I love recipes like that since they are always cheaper and you know what is in them. I would get a separate blender for mixing this so it wont touch food. Still need the cleaning to do. But it could also then be set up in the wood working shed instead of the kitchen. That would be the safest way. I would fill the mix into the jar while it is still liquid and let it cool in the jar. That way no air bubbles will get into the batch and oxidise the lavender oil. Or let it got rancid. The background noise sounds like your son was playing with the dog. A lot of clickediclack from dogs paws like him jumping or running around. It always sounds like that when our dog plays.

I have heard of it. It is used in everything from cosmetics to electrical conductors. It's hardness rate is just under diamonds. From what I read it can take some heat. Commonly used in ceramics. It is used in commercial polishes, plastics, glass and many other products. Probably available in different grain sizes, but I have never looked into it so I am not sure. I have never used the raw material to make my own polish so I would have no clue what ratio to use. I am sure someone has made it and shared how. Be careful breathing it. It is a very fine dust.

@pondartinc40024 жыл бұрын
Its chalk. Like the chalk children use on blackboards. No precautions needed. The DE is calcium carbonate, not silica.
@jerrygortmaker87774 жыл бұрын
@@pondartinc4002 I disagree. From Wikipedia: Chalk is a soft, white, porous, sedimentary carbonate rock, a form of limestone composed of the mineral calcite. Calcite is an ionic salt called calcium carbonate or CaCO3. It forms under reasonably deep marine conditions from the gradual accumulation of minute calcite shells (coccoliths) shed from micro-organisms called coccolithophores. Flint (a type of chert) is very common as bands parallel to the bedding or as nodules embedded in chalk. It is probably derived from sponge spicules or other siliceous organisms as water is expelled upwards during compaction. Flint is often deposited around larger fossils such as Echinoidea which may be silicified (i.e. replaced molecule by molecule by flint). Chalk, as seen in Cretaceous deposits of Western Europe, is unusual among sedimentary limestones in the thickness of the beds. Most cliffs of chalk have very few obvious bedding planes unlike most thick sequences of limestone such as the Carboniferous Limestone or the Jurassic oolitic limestones. This may indicate very stable conditions over tens of millions of years.

Extracted from Wikipedia Diatomaceous earth ( /ˌdaɪ.ətəˌmeɪʃəs ˈɜːrθ/, DE), diatomite or kieselgur/kieselguhr is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that is easily crumbled into a fine white to off-white powder. It has a particle size ranging from less than 3 μm to more than 1 mm, but typically 10 to 200 μm. Depending on the granularity, this powder can have an abrasive feel, similar to pumice powder, and has a low density as a result of its high porosity. The typical chemical composition of oven-dried diatomaceous earth is 80-90% silica, with 2-4% alumina (attributed mostly to clay minerals) and 0.5-2% iron oxide.[1] Diatomaceous earth consists of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled protist. It is used as a filtration aid, mild abrasive in products including metal polishes and toothpaste, mechanical insecticide, absorbent for liquids, matting agent for coatings, reinforcing filler in plastics and rubber, anti-block in plastic films, porous support for chemical catalysts, cat litter, activator in blood clotting studies, a stabilizing component of dynamite, a thermal insulator, and a soil for potted plants and trees like bonsai. I've been using it for years in my pond filter. My warning in my previous post was based on the warning on the side of the box the DE comes in. It is not chalk. More from Wiki: Inhalation of crystalline silica is harmful to the lungs, causing silicosis. Amorphous silica is considered to have low toxicity, but prolonged inhalation causes changes to the lungs.[33] Diatomaceous earth is mostly amorphous silica, but contains some crystalline silica, especially in the saltwater forms.[34] In a study of workers, those exposed to natural D.E. for over 5 years had no significant lung changes, while 40% of those exposed to the calcined form had developed pneumoconiosis.[35]Today's common D.E. formulations are safer to use as they are predominantly made up of amorphous silica and contain little or no crystalline silica

how do you heat the beeswax & mineral oil if your don't use the double boiler approach? Great video, , ,THANK YOU
@valeriehenschel15905 жыл бұрын
Vitamix blenders have heaters in them.
@KimTippin5 жыл бұрын
The friction causes the heat. But it doesn't have to get hot. The blender breaks down the wax. So no worried with getting burnt from hot oil :)

Can i use boiled linseed oil instead of mineral oil?
@KimTippin2 жыл бұрын
I am sure it could be, but Boiled Linseed Oil is NOT food safe.
@HappilyHomicidalHooligan5 жыл бұрын
Does your blender have a heater in it or is the heat generated by the friction of the blade spinning in the mineral oil?

Just curious as to why you mixed the DE in the bowl as opposed to mixing it in the blender 🤔
@KimTippin5 жыл бұрын
Because it is fine powder that will fly everywhere... don't ask me how I found that out... lol My blender has two speeds...fast as lighting and warp speed... lol so there is no slowly adding powder. It just goes....everwhere. 😂

the paste comes out quite dark. will that stain lighter woods ?
@KimTippin4 жыл бұрын
I have used it on light maple and it has not stained it. The color is from the type of stone used.

Do you have to use Beeswax or can you substitute Paraffin Wax?

Found out the hard way...if you have colitis...you need gloves when working with mineral oil...because it is a lubricant laxative.

You wouldn't know what the grit equivalent would be?
@KimTippin5 жыл бұрын
To be honest I am not 100% sure. This recipe only has the DE powder and not the pumice. If anyone knows what the grit is of their commercial brand, could you please comment so we have some idea of the approximate Grit. Thank you!
@WoodnMetalShoppe5 жыл бұрын
@@KimTippin I think the commercial stuff is around 2000 to 3000 grit. You can also get pumice for rock tumblers that will be about 2000 grit too.

Have you ever made pens and used your abrasive paste on pens? I just ordered some Yorkshire Grit, but after watching your video, it looked like something I could do. I was just thinking maybe acrylic pens might be a good way to test the difference. You could use your paste on the top and YG on the bottom end. I may have to give that a try because YG is pricey.
@KimTippin5 жыл бұрын
I have never made a pen... I want to. I have used this on wood / resin and it works good on it. You can also add ground pumice stone for abrasion. Amazon sells it.

I use it on everything including pens. It works great!

@@KimTippin dollar Tree here doesn't have mineral oil.. wow Walmart must of come down on the price. It's been years since I looked there because Dollar General was way cheaper then. Mineral oil then was 4 dollars a pint at Walmart back then.
