Love all you do. I prefer the double boiler method, to avoid the stirring till it cools I just put the mixing pan in a bowl of ice water and stir for a short time and scrape the sides of the pan. 5 min max. Only cleanup if the mixing pan which is easy. Start to finish 15 min including cleanup. I like DE.

I attempted to mix my own batch once before with fair results. However, the mini crock pot didn't really get things got enough, anyway, the other day I mixed a small amount with some Minwax paste wax. And the results were very good. And I started with a CA finish and used the polish to shine it up to see what happens, you can see yourself in the finish. Maybe I will try again one day.

Hey Kim. I just made my first batch using the double boiler method. I mixed in the double bouler until clear. Next I poured in the DE then moved my (metal) bowl to a bowl filled with ice water. And stirred. I had to remove the bowl from the ice water a couple times to mix in hardened lumps scraped from the sides with the whisk. Within 5 minutes I had cake icing consistency. The big thing was constantly scraping the sides and bottom with the whisk. Since I don't have a blender that will so the job, I thought i would give it a try.

Hi, I used the mineral oil, carnauba wax that I got on Amazon and some bees wax from a friend that has honey bees, the abrasive i used was baking soda and orange oil. It came out good gives a decent shine, and doesn’t darken the wood, and it’s all natural seeing as it can all be consumed.

To clean the inside of the blender, use Dawn dish detergent and salt. Coat the inside with detergent, and sprinkle salt into the detergent,, the salt acts as an abrasive. Same for pan used for home made pop corn on stove, the salt will wash away the cooking oil used to pop the corn kernels.

Thank you for sharing this recipe & method. For those of us that use the metric system, here are the ingredients converted; round figures used as amounts are not chemistry critical. Mineral oil=950 ml, Beeswax = 225 gm, DE (diatoms) 225 gm. I note that USA imperial measurements are a little different to UK imperial. Metric is universal. 👍🤗🇦🇺 ‘Down Under’ just round up, 1000 ml, 250 gm, 250 gm.

Even faster, and less mess, use microwave and straight sided canning jar. Heat oil and wax (one minute increments) until wax melts into oil when stirred. Add D.E. and stir. Place jar in bowl of ice water while doing remaining blending. Wipe sides and add plastic lid when wax solidifies. Much easier and less clean up. And no blender cleaning or risk of partner disapproval.

Great idea on using the blender. I have thought of making some since Daniel Vilarino's video came out a few years back but your method is easier (safer?). I have already splashed my kitchen with a hot bees wax mixture a few years ago. For those who may not know diatomaceous earth is also called Rotten Stone and Tripoli. The Yorkshire version has pumice and tripoli; it could be the Yorkshire microfine has the pumice left out. I am not sure about Ack's. For a large batch such as yours I think I would use pumice (4F grit) for half and tripoli for the other half. The pumice also breaks down but starts much more aggressive if you start after 220 sanding.

It should say on the bag "food grade" . I wouldn't trust it if it didn't clearly state that. Tractor supply now has the large 50lb bags of food grade DE for around $30. It is worth buying that amount especially if you have multiple uses for it. Garden, pest control, wormer and so on. :)

Hi Kim! Just subscribed to your channel, thank you for putting my link in the description. You have there abrasive paste to last you for quite a while, lol! I really like that formula and have been using it for many years. I used EEE before, but I did not like the odor and I think they used some sort of petroleum distillate in their formula. The addition of the lavender (or lemon grass) essential oil seems like a nice touch, it certainly will make your bowls smell nice. Keep up with the wood work! Cheers! Daniel

Great, informative video, Kim! I just finished making my own batch of abrasive paste, but did not order supplies from Amazon or go to Wally Martinez (Walmart). Instead, I got my DE from Lowe’s (4# for $9), mineral oil from the drug store next door to Lowe’s and beeswax from Hobby Lobby just up the street. Yeah, I paid a lot more. But I got all my supplies in about an hours time and did not have to wait for Amazon to ship and saved on shipping costs; which probably evens things out since I don’t use Amazon Prime. I am not a fan of Amazon since I like supporting local businesses and feel my money needs to stay local instead of making Bezos richer. How big is to big? But that’s another story and left alone here. Anyway, the abrasive paste works great and smells good too.

@@fullsavage2743 Okay, here's some useful "intel" on your exact position, having purchased my first lathe on Amazon about 18 months ago. With the caveat of having had years of work with someone else's lathe some 35 years ago. 🤔 I chose a foxshop W1758 for about $750, and I saw it there today for $999! Almost everybody has a better lathe than I have, being much heavier and having a much better RPM range, even reverse if you can believe it. The W1758 really needs to be bolted to the ground, and only 6 gears with the bottom RPM being 640. Other than that,it has taken my abuse pretty well.

I love recipes like that since they are always cheaper and you know what is in them. I would get a separate blender for mixing this so it wont touch food. Still need the cleaning to do. But it could also then be set up in the wood working shed instead of the kitchen. That would be the safest way. I would fill the mix into the jar while it is still liquid and let it cool in the jar. That way no air bubbles will get into the batch and oxidise the lavender oil. Or let it got rancid. The background noise sounds like your son was playing with the dog. A lot of clickediclack from dogs paws like him jumping or running around. It always sounds like that when our dog plays.

I have heard of it. It is used in everything from cosmetics to electrical conductors. It's hardness rate is just under diamonds. From what I read it can take some heat. Commonly used in ceramics. It is used in commercial polishes, plastics, glass and many other products. Probably available in different grain sizes, but I have never looked into it so I am not sure. I have never used the raw material to make my own polish so I would have no clue what ratio to use. I am sure someone has made it and shared how. Be careful breathing it. It is a very fine dust.

Its chalk. Like the chalk children use on blackboards. No precautions needed. The DE is calcium carbonate, not silica.
@jerrygortmaker8777
@jerrygortmaker8777 4 жыл бұрын
@@pondartinc4002 I disagree. From Wikipedia: Chalk is a soft, white, porous, sedimentary carbonate rock, a form of limestone composed of the mineral calcite. Calcite is an ionic salt called calcium carbonate or CaCO3. It forms under reasonably deep marine conditions from the gradual accumulation of minute calcite shells (coccoliths) shed from micro-organisms called coccolithophores. Flint (a type of chert) is very common as bands parallel to the bedding or as nodules embedded in chalk. It is probably derived from sponge spicules or other siliceous organisms as water is expelled upwards during compaction. Flint is often deposited around larger fossils such as Echinoidea which may be silicified (i.e. replaced molecule by molecule by flint). Chalk, as seen in Cretaceous deposits of Western Europe, is unusual among sedimentary limestones in the thickness of the beds. Most cliffs of chalk have very few obvious bedding planes unlike most thick sequences of limestone such as the Carboniferous Limestone or the Jurassic oolitic limestones. This may indicate very stable conditions over tens of millions of years.

Extracted from Wikipedia Diatomaceous earth ( /ˌdaɪ.ətəˌmeɪʃəs ˈɜːrθ/, DE), diatomite or kieselgur/kieselguhr is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that is easily crumbled into a fine white to off-white powder. It has a particle size ranging from less than 3 μm to more than 1 mm, but typically 10 to 200 μm. Depending on the granularity, this powder can have an abrasive feel, similar to pumice powder, and has a low density as a result of its high porosity. The typical chemical composition of oven-dried diatomaceous earth is 80-90% silica, with 2-4% alumina (attributed mostly to clay minerals) and 0.5-2% iron oxide.[1] Diatomaceous earth consists of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled protist. It is used as a filtration aid, mild abrasive in products including metal polishes and toothpaste, mechanical insecticide, absorbent for liquids, matting agent for coatings, reinforcing filler in plastics and rubber, anti-block in plastic films, porous support for chemical catalysts, cat litter, activator in blood clotting studies, a stabilizing component of dynamite, a thermal insulator, and a soil for potted plants and trees like bonsai. I've been using it for years in my pond filter. My warning in my previous post was based on the warning on the side of the box the DE comes in. It is not chalk. More from Wiki: Inhalation of crystalline silica is harmful to the lungs, causing silicosis. Amorphous silica is considered to have low toxicity, but prolonged inhalation causes changes to the lungs.[33] Diatomaceous earth is mostly amorphous silica, but contains some crystalline silica, especially in the saltwater forms.[34] In a study of workers, those exposed to natural D.E. for over 5 years had no significant lung changes, while 40% of those exposed to the calcined form had developed pneumoconiosis.[35]Today's common D.E. formulations are safer to use as they are predominantly made up of amorphous silica and contain little or no crystalline silica

The best way to avoid the "YOU USED MY MIXER FOR WHAT!!!" Argument entirely is to buy 1 that will be used for making Abrasive Paste only (saves on cleaning effort as well since you don't need to get ALL the residue out)...

Thank you for sharing with us. Can you tell me the difference in application of O. B Shine Juice and your polishing paste?
@KimTippin
@KimTippin 5 жыл бұрын
The OB shine juice is very similar to the French polish except OB has Boiled Linseed oil and French polish does not. It is a friction polish. My process is after sanding I apply a sanding sealer, then abrasive paste, get all remaining paste off then apply OB. I hope that answered your question. If not, please let me know. 😁🤗

Another way to easily clean blender style mixers is add some water and dish soap, put the lid on TIGHT and turn it on (set to With EXTREME Prejudice)... The Blades then thoroughly clean both themselves AND all the little nooks & crannies in the bottom...Sponge/scrubbie the top half, rinse and your done... I clean my NINJA Smoothie Mixer after making the Cheese Sauce for Mac & Cheese this way all the time and it's quick and very easy... Replacing the soap with DE powder in your paste mixer should do the same thing...

The friction causes the heat. But it doesn't have to get hot. The blender breaks down the wax. So no worried with getting burnt from hot oil :)

Have you ever made pens and used your abrasive paste on pens? I just ordered some Yorkshire Grit, but after watching your video, it looked like something I could do. I was just thinking maybe acrylic pens might be a good way to test the difference. You could use your paste on the top and YG on the bottom end. I may have to give that a try because YG is pricey.

I have never made a pen... I want to. I have used this on wood / resin and it works good on it. You can also add ground pumice stone for abrasion. Amazon sells it.
