I use beeswax and coconut oil. I just put my 1l saucepan inside my 2l saucepan eith the water in the 2l ssucepan not quite touching the 1l saucepan. I use 3T beeswax granules to 1/2 cup of coconut oil. I use it on my hands, my lips, my feet, my face - everything.

Does the coconut oil go rancid at all or have a shelf life?

Great video. I will definitely try making some abrasive wax. Thanks!

Flaxseed Oil and Walnut Oil are food safe as well as Mineral Oil. Mineral Oil is used as a laxative.

I wasn’t familiar with flaxseed but my wife just said she puts it in her smoothies sometimes. I know a lot of people like walnut oil. I just had sticker $ shock when I looked at it years ago.

@@woodworkingmcdanielstyle I use walnut oil, but I've read it could be a problem for people with nut allergies. I've definitely had a problem with the dark stuff getting trapped in end grain.

Yeah I’m not a fan of the dark abrasive for that reason. I just didn’t know when I bought the dark rotten stone.

@slownsteady100 the Walnut Oil I use is made by Doctor's Woodshop. It is clear, and said that it is foodsafe. I also have the same brand in Microcrystal Wax Bowl Finish. It's made with Walnut Oil and wax. It also says that they don't use solvents, and it is foodsafe as well.

Is this similar to the Howards Feed and Wax? I'm still experimenting with finishes and have found that different wood requires different finishes. It's really quite bewildering.

I’ve never used Howard’s but looks similar. They say it contains oils and beeswax and carnuba wax. Also some orange oil (probably makes it smell great). I still experiment with finishes also. I use shine juice on some spindle turnings but have found that it gets soaked into end grain pores too much when used on many bowls. I’ve tried shellac, poly, and lacquer. I’ve kinda settled on this wood butter finish because it is so easy and easy to reapply. But if someone wants a shine that lasts, this is not the best for that. Good luck and let me know if you find something you love.

I'm kinda down the "Amazon rabbit hole" here when it comes to the products you've described. Maybe an idea would be to put some info in the description. Otherwise, great info. Thanks. And, on a side note, I had completely forgot about "rotten stone". Hadn't used it in years. It's kind of an "old timey" product, but I remember it in a stick form, and you'd charge a buffing wheel or a strop. Unless I "mis-remembered", which is also possible. Carry on!

Thanks for the feedback Bob! I’ll try to add some links by tomorrow morning. I am new to this KZbin creation thing so your feedback is very helpful.

Ok I think I got all the links for this video added. I see some of the exact products are not available right now. Maybe supply chain issues still? Anyway I found another option for Tripoli that isn’t dark grey. I have a link for the wax pellets and other abrasives. I also posted a link to the two most popular pre-made abrasive pastes. You are correct about the abrasives in the stick form. I use the Beall buffing system and a Tripoli compound bar/stick comes with it to charge the wheel.

How much 4F did you add to the 8 ounce container? Did this volume replace the amount of mineral oil needed? Thanks

It’s really a preference thing. I would say 1-2 tablespoons of abrasive powder for 8 ounces of wood butter. More mineral oil to wax the thinner the mix, but adding the abrasive will thicken it some. A thin mix will let you stir in the abrasive with a pop sickle stick after the mix cools. So you can slowly add until you like it. Too much wax to mineral oil will make it more difficult to stir in and also more difficult to apply to your applicator pad when turning. Long winded answer but I prefer a final mix that is the texture of toothpaste. You may like yours thicker or thinner. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
