DIY Faux Wood Garage Door

Real Wood Garage Doors can be extremely expensive, but if you have some patience and are not afraid to do a bit of #DIY work, you can achieve the look for a fraction of the cost. We were inspired by / 2052970995015519 and followed a similar procedure but used a different technique to achieve the look we were looking for. What do you think of the finish look?
Supplies used:
- Annie Sloan #ChalkPaint in Cocoa
- Modern Masters Master Clear Supreme - Satin Finish
- Old Masters Gel Stain in Spanish Oak and Dark Walnut
- A couple of Chip Brushes
- Cheesecloth and Sponge
- Latex or Nitrile Gloves
- 4" Roller

Would this work on an actual wood garage door? Its really old wood and I doubt its in great condition. Its been painted multiple times with red being the most recent and Im ready to get rid of the red.

how did you paint the edges of the door that are hidden behind the frame or weather stripping, when your door is opening you'll see the unpainted edges?

latashaslife thank you! This project was completed in September of 2018. The door looks exactly the same as it did when finished. There’s no peeling or bubbling. As long as it’s sealed properly there shouldn’t be any problems with the durability.

What’s the difference in chalk paint and regular paint?

Chalk paint adheres to most surfaces without the need for priming and only a “scuff” sand. The minerals and pore space present in chalk paints allow it to grip more slippery surfaces. All in all its easier to get a properly adhered finish with chalk style paints. Regular Latex/Acrylic paint often requires more sanding and priming for proper adhesion. When the proper prep is not given on your piece prior to painting, you can end up with peeling paint. It's really a preference, chalk paint is excellent to refinishing wood furniture and for distressing.

This is very close to Clopay's Ultra-Grain Slate Garage Door. I was told the colors were Charcoal, Khaki and Black. Does the Spanish oak gel have an orange or taupe beige? does it combined with this cocoa color do that? Thanks this is very close to what I want. How long did it take? Did you brush everything?

The Spanish Oak is a very dark brown, almost black, there's no orange or taupe on it. We used it to give the doors more depth and dimension on the recess areas of the panels. We did this project over a weekend. The chalk paint was rolled in and the gel stains were brushed. We used a roller for the sealer coats. It still looks great and it's been well over a year. We've done it multiple times on some of our clients garage doors and the outcome has always been the same. Just confirming that I can sand and scuff my already cocoa-colored aluminum door in lieu of chalk paint. Then just gel stain and top coat.

9-5 Channel We got everything except the chalk paint in a local painting supply store but you can find everything on amazon. The chalk paint we got at a local craft store that stocks Annie Sloan. Did you need to add any floetrol or similar to the gel stains?

Nothing additional products were used. After sealing the chalk paint, we applied the gel stain directly on top with a brush.

How come the Cocoa paint looks brown at first, but then it looks much brighter, creme, later on? Did you switch up paints?

Called to check on stock for the chalk paint, She didn't recommend it for "outdoors" also said I would need to sand my garage door...? This true

You can use chalk paint for both indoor and outdoor applications. You just need to seal it with an exterior protective coat such as the Modern Masters Clear Coat we used for this project. There’s no need to sand the garage door, when using chalk paint the only prep work needed to be done is to thoroughly clean and remove any dirt, dust particles and oil residues from the surface and it will adhere properly. If the surface is not clean and oil free, then there might be some peeling or bubbling of the paint.

@@MDCfineliving What about sanding? Does the alum garage door have to be sanded? Or can i just pressure wash and scrub?

James Bahr you don’t have to sand the garage door. Chalk paint will adhere without having to sand or prime as long as you properly clean it before starting. You can pressure wash or use some soap and water to scrub away the dirt which is what we did. Best of luck with this project.
