I like how the inside layer seems to fit inside the opening and the outside layer seems to almost fit outside of it. It seems like that creates a good, relatively fool-proof seal.

I have an arched fireplace, which made it more difficult to cut the foam board to fit. Although it helps quite a bit, it is not an air tight seal, as cold air still leaks in around the edges, especially since each brick mortar joint is slightly indented, leaving more gap. I wish there were a way to seal it up air tight. Any ideas?

If have a open fire place best is to save up for a fire place insert that had metal and fire bricks to retain the heat that makes it like a wood stove. Don't get rid if it because wood heat is a good souce auxiliary heat or main heat if loose electricity or natural gas lighting in a storm.
