this fluffy teddy bear is super cute and customizable, and they’re not too difficult to make! They make for great gifts or just something nice for yourself :)
Written instructions:
For each teddy bear, you’ll need:
- A paper pattern of your teddy bear
- 2 rectangles of fabric that can contain your teddy bear pattern
- A marker
- A sewing machine and/or needle and thread
- Stuffed animal filling (I used Polyester Packing Fiber Fill and leftover fabric scraps)
(optionally) ribbon or buttons for eyes or decoration
1. For creating a pattern piece, you can get creative! I iterated through a couple shapes before I got to my final teddy bear shape. I left about a ¼-½ inch extra around the perimeter of my shape for seam allowance.
2. Cut 2 rectangles of fabric that will fit your pattern piece (my rectangles were about 12 inches by 7.5 inches)
3. Put your rectangles of fabric right sides together (so wrong sides facing out) and trace your teddy bear pattern.
4. Clearly mark on your pattern and fabric a gap to leave open once you start sewing. This will be the hole we use to turn the bear inside out
5. Pin the 2 rectangles together so the fabric is stable while you sew
6. Sew along the edge, making sure you’re leaving about ¼ inch extra for seam allowance. Remember to also leave a sizable gap along the edge so we can turn the bear inside out!
7. When you’re done sewing, you can unpin your temporary pins and cut the excess fabric around the bear
8. Flip the bear inside out, using the hole that you’ve left on the side
9. Stuff the bear with your filling of choice. I ended up using Polyester Packing Fiber Fill and leftover fabric scraps from trimming the bear). I recommend cutting up your leftover fabric scraps before stuffing the bear because it’s easier for smaller pieces to conform to your bear shell.
10. When you’re done stuffing, close the hole with an invisible stitch. (I love this tutorial by OnlineFabriceStore: • How to Hand Sew an Inv... )
11. You’re done! Feel free to add embellishments as you wish, I tied a black ribbon around the neck of this one. I’ve made others with button eyes, a tie around its neck, or buttons down the center - the decorations are up to you!
