I’m really enjoying your videos and the insight into what studying architecture is actually like so thank u for sharing. May i ask what the intro courses were like in 1st/2nd year? What classes did you do and what were your assignments like? Hope your week is all-nighter free!

Hi, thank you so much for watching! In my 1st and 2nd years, I took pre-requisites for the architecture major called 1. American Architecture and Urbanism (more of an overview, art historical class on types of buildings and movements in the US, this class had a paper ~10 pages and a final exam, with discussion sections and posts to respond to) 2. Intro to Architecture (basics of architectural theory, like who are the giants in the field and what aspects to care about like light, texture, etc. This class had a midterm assignment of designing a pavilion and a final project to design a lamp, or the option of writing a paper) 3. Scales of Design (first taste of a studio course with 4 projects over a semester, varying in scale from human figure to global scale. Projects included drawing, model making, etc. and presenting to a panel of critics for review) I hope this is helpful, please let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know!

@@carrielucky10 Thank you so much for taking the time to give such a detailed answer - it’s so helpful! If I could ask one more question? When you say drawing and model making, what kind of things do you mean? Thank you!

@@jessas6358 yes! for drawings, they could range from a quick sketch to more detailed perspectives to a section/plan/elevation of a building. Yale's program in general really emphasizes drawing as a way of thinking+seeing, so we do a lot of hand drawing. Some classmates chose to draw only by hand and some chose to work with computer software such as Rhino, AutoCAD, Illustrator, etc. It really depended on the project because they turn out to be quite individual. For models, they could be mini-versions of buildings made out of clay, wood, paper, etc. They can be hand-made or laser cut and assembled or plaster cast - this also depends on the individual and what they'd want to express in their model. Because Scales of Design is not ONLY a building-focused class, we also had to come up with a creative way to depict a globe (some people used foam, acrylic, paper, etc.) and a city (could depend on a social movement or particular message you're trying to send - I made my model in an umbrella as I was talking about the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong).

yale is my dream school and i also want to do architecture so this video is so cool! on a side note, did your admission essays for yale mention anything about architecture? all the essay advice videos on youtube and essay examples on application bee and admit yogi are from people with different majors...

hi!! thank you so much for watching. I did not really talk about architecture in my application as I was interested in studying linguistics at the time. I indicated I was interested in architecture as a major, but my essays were mainly about my interests in language.
