This may be one of the BEST woodworking videos on the net. As I was low on funds, I used recycled pallete wood and a flat piece of laminated MDF I found thrown out by one of my nieghbours. I used old window sashs that were laying around and old hinges from an old door. My only purchases were 4 x 75mm / 3" locking swivel casters (4) and 4 x 12.5cm / 5" strap hinges (4) and proper wood screws. The only thing I had to keep an eye on was the twist on some of the pallete wood, but it's the most useful bench ever! I use it ALL THE TIME under my car port as I don't have a garage. I also added a removable four point power board to the side which hooks on to two screws on the side. THANKS SO MUCH for making this video. I LOVE MY PORTABLE WORK BENCH! - Aussie Ed.

I've made several of these smaller, as stands in my shop. I need space-saving and flexible. Nice job using the sash locks! I may replace a couple of them on the ones I built. Also Iiked the reinforced top. To attach my top I used 2-4 countersunk carriage bolts and a thru star knob to secure each one underneath. Another way to make it more stable: I made a bottom shelf that fits on the bottom ledge. I don't secure it, it stays solid, helps keep everything square and you can put whatever tools and materials you are using for your project down there. Easy to remove and mine can store in the folded workbench, but that would depend on the dimensions of your bench/stand.

That's genius! I was just thinking how nice it would be to have a lower shelf. I may need to make one now. Thanks!

Just completed building the mobile workbench using the plans I purchased from you. I was unsure of my ability to transfer the measurements for the dowel placement so I cheated. I turned the top over and drilled a half inch deep hole equidistant from each corner and glued a half inch x 11/4 in dowel in the holes. Each dowel had a center sharp "pin" made from a cut off finishing nail. I turned the top over and put it in place. The sharp pin marked the exact correct spot for me to drill the receptacle hole and the top fit perfectly. As I mentioned before the next project is the folding saw horses. Thanks again for your great ideas.

Great Build. I made this for my husband for his birthday and the only issue that I ran into was the butt hinges. I got the 3 inch but you didn't specify on the list that they were narrow ones so I guess I got the regular ones and it took me a minute to figure out that the hinges were the wrong ones. Other than that the build came out amazing!!! Not bad for my first wood work build!!! Thanks a bunch! The hubby loved it!!

I'm in the middle of my build and BAM!! the same thing. I bought the 3"x3" hinges and they do not work. I looked up on Home Depot site and saw that there are 3" narrow hinges. I'm leaving now to exchange them. Good thing I live 5 minutes from there.

Just found your DIY Folding Mobile Workbench video. I like your design. It is an interesting comparison to the Worx brand "Pegasus Folding Table & Sawhorse". Both designs collapse for convenient storage, but they do so differently. Yours has wheels, the Pegasus does not. The Pegasus comes pre-assembled and includes two clamps. Yours is a DIY project, and whoever completes the project can take pride in their work. I like that you demonstrate techniques to construct projects that can be used by people who don't already have a workshop or can be used in a "field expedient" environment. A couple of years ago, I purchased a set of Pegasus Sawhorses (with clamps) and a Pegasus Folding Table & Sawhorse (with clamps), which have met my needs for portable workbench surfaces (for now, at least). With a couple of two-by-fours and a sheet of 2'x4' plywood, the sawhorses compete with your Folding Mobile Workbench in function, if not elegance of design. I like learning of the solutions people have created to solve the problems of small or temporary workspaces that still yearn for a full suite of capabilities. Thank you for sharing your video, "Pneumatic Addict".

I like this. I'm making mine similar with one design change to add stability. Make the top first and set the dimensions of the legs. Then make the folding cross-pieces a little bigger. When they are unfolded, they should be under tension and "snap" open. They can still be latched to lock them in place. Great stuff.

Hi Elisha. I got the plans last year and built the workbench. I love it! The only thing I did not keep in mind was your 4x2's differ a bit in size than what I could get here in South Africa so it does not close completely. I could cut off some of the folding panels but I don't want to lose the length of the table as I made a bigger table top so I left it as is. I have a bench that it is not in the way but is there when I need it. My dad has a solid workbench and if I asked to use I could only get to use maybe 40cm x 60cm of 200cm x 60cm, which was super frustrating and I rarely made something due to this limited space I could use. This bench is just perfect and I could finally begin to get to do more woodworking. Thanks for sharing this great idea!

This is brilliant! I have no space at all because my garage is a portrait studio, so I can't do wood working in there - NO sawdust allowed. Now I can roll this outside and go to work! Thank you.

Hey there, if you use wood glue along with screws, you'll make even stronger furnitures. The way your work bench opens up is pretty slick.
@joecocuzzo55563 жыл бұрын
I just finished this. I used Rocker bench castors that flip up and let the legs rest on the ground instead of the swivel castors. I made the legs 31" long vs 27 because of the loss of the 4" castor height. The bench is surprisingly sturdy when opened and the top is installed. I mortised the 1x3 in the spots where the sash lock needed room to nest so the structure would collapse more fully. A set of dowel centers made locating the 4 dowels for the top a lot easier than measuring, just pick the 4 spots in the base and then use the dowel centers to mark the corresponding spots to drill in the bench top. I only had 2 1/2" centers, so I did two, installed the dowels, then marked the next pair with the top on the first pair. Self centering hinge bit also was nice to have to drill the pilot holes for the hinges.

Great project, I love folding and collapsing stuff! I'm planning on a shop overhaul this summer and I'm thinking about some folding carts as part of that, this gave me some great ideas. I forget who I picked it up from, but if you have a bunch of hardware to do some double sided tape or CA glue an activator is awesome for getting it lined up and holding it in place while you pre-drill and screw. Probably one of my favorite tips I've picked up.

Ok, to be honest the fact that your a woman and you simplified something that most of use or will use everyday come as no surprise. Simple, study and doable. I have seen 20 or 30 videos on here some simple and cost effective others were created by wood working pros, which I respect but, for those of use that do not have a shop, this is something that I did in 30 min. i'm a comp tech & DIY'er, but love simplicity. Beautiful job. Also I attached a jig opennig and table saw plate. 2min attachment saved a world of time and space.

This workbench will pull double duty. It will serve as a workbench, and the other function will be an extra table top surface for BBQs. I'll make two separate tops. I just purchased the plans. And just so you know my wife said your the only pretty woman that, I have permission to watch for 10 minutes or longer ; if you keep on producing these genius projects and plans that is LOL! Wow. Awesome. The sashe window lock idea is really good. I'd have used a gate style twist latch. But the sashe locks should have less slop in them. I would imagine 4 locating pegs in the worktop should be enough to keep it square.

I want to use a similar concept to make a dining room table that can be folded up and moved out of the way for more space when we’re not having a meal or playing games at the table. By the way we have 11 children at home plus my wife and I and we often have friends over so we need a lot of extra seating capacity. After this my next project will be chairs that are also collapsible/storable when not in use.

I was thinking about making a top that could convert into a router table & table saw, but setting it on a couple of saw horses didn't seem like it would be stable enough. With this, I can make interchanging tops and still save on space. We are working in a medium garden shed with very little space.

Couldn't get mine to completely collapse flush. Theres maybe 1/2 inch of wood sticking out by the hinges of the support arms. Not sure what went wrong. You made it look so easy. Lol. It was my first major project. Im still satisfied with it. 2 drills is better than one. Having to switch bits every time was tedious and my hands started cramping. I used 1 ryobi drill and 5 1/2 inch circular saw. The battery didnt last had to charge 3 times. Gonna need a spare or upgrade my arsenal. Was a fun but exhausting project in this Texas Heat. Thank you so much for your videos. Keep it up. Subbed.

Interesting! I made a very similar 'layout' table from a set of plans purportedly from a 1958 popular mechanics issue (I never saw the magazine, a friend gave me the plan). Just finished my bench this afternoon. I'll have to say it turned out awesome. It's been mentioned in the comments that the hinges are 3" narrow utility type. They are in a 2 pack. I bought the wrong ones. Someone else mentioned it not folding together completely. In mine this was due to the sash locks hitting the sides. I'm very happy with the bench. Thanks for sharing this.

I also made this workbench. Only thing i did different is that i made those boards underneath the worktop a bit bigger. I placed them behind the upper crossbar. Now i do not need a lock on it because the board underneath acts as the lock. This also made it unnecessary to put those dowels in the sides. Also left out the bottom crossbar, since i would always kick it.
