In the UK we call it Greyboard. Chipboard (also known as MDF board) is a heavier material which can only be cut by saw.

what paper did you use for the game board print out?
@pubmeeple
@pubmeeple 5 жыл бұрын
This was a thin paper printed at my local office max printing service. I can't remember the details but I asked for something 20 lbs or lighter using their laser printer. You don't want anything thick (like the 80 lbs cardstock). Copy paper quality works well for prototyping

I think that the only way to get smart is to try it. I'm as dumb as they come, and I was able to figure out how to help my English-as-a-Second-Language student write his Ph.D thesis on catalysis of some kind of fuel reagent because I sat down and worked really hard at understanding his topics. And hot dang is that stuff difficult to figure out.

I've tried this a few times and I just can't seem to get it to work. Every time I try to close the board and it doesn't close all the way. Also the middle of the backing paper bunches up badly when you try to close it. Is there something I'm missing?
@pubmeeple
@pubmeeple 5 жыл бұрын
So I've ran into this problem when the paper on the front of the board is too thick. I try to print on something thinner than a standard weight if possible (something cheap). I started using the method in our tri-fold video for most of my current projects though. It cuts the backside of the backing paper so you don't have to worry about the tension created by the paper springing it open. It also keeps the front folds nice and neat. More games are made this way today anyway so it's becoming more acceptable
@Beeromancer

@pubmeeple

Poster board is a thinner stock than the chip board shown here. But experimentation is always encouraged. Usually poster board is about as thick as cereal box material. What I'm using is about the thickness of a credit card or a penny

@Carey Hunt this is a great request. I assume you mean something like a dial or a rondel with an arm like in Ora et Labora. If we get to making more DIYs, I'll throw this at the top of the list. In the mean time I'll suggest something like our token/tile tutorial but with a plastic chicago screw to hold an arm/dial in place: www.amazon.com/8-inch-Plastic-Screw-Chicago-Screws/dp/B006W6TT94/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1544588380&sr=8-5&keywords=3%2F8+plastic+chicago+screw

A lot of resources for making home-brew board games can be found right here on KZbin. Without a more specific question, I'm not sure how to direct the answer. Once you get your prototype components together the game needs to be playtested and refined in detail by as many people as possible.

I typically go to an art-craft store. But you may also find something at a place that frames pictures. You can also save the back of tear-off note pads (the large lined paper pads) if you don't need anything larger than notebook size

I never want to tell someone they can't use some kind of material. I imagine using foam core will come out muck thicker and may not work as well with a folding board. Works really well with a non-folding board though. I've used foam core for large mat backgrounds

Sorry for a late reply. I've been trying to find a good translation but the products in town usually include spanish on the label and these don't. Butcher paper would work well, maybe even just a craft paper. The paper I used in this tutorial is the kind of paper a school teacher uses to cover a cork board in a classroom. Most of these cork board or bulletin paper does not fade over time

if your game board is printing on glossy photo paper would you still recommend creasing it? or would you cut it and apply to each side?
@pubmeeple
@pubmeeple 8 жыл бұрын
+Erik McArthur good question. In my experience thicker stock doesn't do as well with any kind of folding/creasing. And the glossy photo paper tends to crack even with scoring. If you are set in using photo paper would you be open to a modular-style board (the sections fit together like tiles)?

+Pub Meeple Thanks so much for the reply. I'll start by saying I just went for it and it looks beautiful! I put my image on one of those blank tri-fold game boards you can buy on amazon. but, after one night the board REALLY warped and I'm thinking it was maybe because of the thickness of the paper actually pulling the board. I'm hoping with time and some heavy weight it flatten back out.
@ReallyWemja
@ReallyWemja 8 жыл бұрын
I watched some of your tutorials and I must say that they are clear and easy to follow. One thing that I surprised me is that you use a glue stick for gluing the boards. something I remember from using it as a kid is that is does not really stick stuff together like you want it to.When I have glued paper/cardboard for projects I used D2 wood glue (fast curing PVA glue). It's still pretty easy to use, moisture proof and when it's dry the bond is stronger then the cohesion of the paper itself. Is there a reason you don't use it in combination with printed paper ?
@pubmeeple
@pubmeeple 8 жыл бұрын
+Wemja, thanks a bunch for your kind words. I do use a lot of glue sticks. It started by looking for an easy solution for 1) keeping the paper from wrinkling because of the glue and 2) using a glue that was forgiving with moving the paper around after it was applied and again without wrinkling. Spray glues also worked well but were less forgiving with application (and messy). I do like PVA glue and use it for a lot of plastics and model work. The dry time is right for it and the bond would be better. If You don't have any trouble with getting a smooth product then use it!
@ReallyWemja
@ReallyWemja 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the fast response, wrinkling paper has not been an issue for me with D2 wood glue since it has less solvent and/or water compared to Elmer's glue. This has as side effect that it is hard to move the paper around to make adjustments during the glue up. I will give it a try and see how it turns out.

@the_eminent_Joshua_E_Hrouda
@the_eminent_Joshua_E_Hrouda 8 жыл бұрын
Very similar to what I imagined it would look like, going together. I have a c.1981 game board, that is a bit warped, showing some brown stains, and doesn't hold the click-in runner properly, and there's some bubbling of the paper, so I'd like to make my own replacement. Your video gave me some confidence in doing it. But where should I go to get the top paper (main image) printed? And on what? Even a laser A3 printer won't print big enough, for the SQUARE printout I need. I got a quote from Kwik-Kopy today, for $25-30. Surely there's a cheaper way! The whole game, when you can find it, at a garage sale/fete, only costs $2!! But they are so rarely available! Here's the game I'd like to make a new board for: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3887/stock-market-game
@pubmeeple
@pubmeeple 8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Hrouda, you'll want to laser print anything you can as the finish doesn't smear or feel tacky like standard ink printing, thinner paper works better. There are some options to getting the cost down. One thing you might try is printing the board onto two separate pieces of paper and having the seam meet at the fold where it's less noticeable. Printing on anything larger than a local standard does get pricey.
@AndyStarrr
@AndyStarrr 9 жыл бұрын
In your next video it states that we can use this video to make a game board with 2 folds so there are 3 of the same size section. However, it doesn't state whether the gap between the first and second section, should be bigger then the gap between the second and third section as the first section will fold over the second and third section. Would the gap need to be the same size or twice the size?
@pubmeeple
@pubmeeple 9 жыл бұрын
Andrea Jones Great question. You will need a wider hinge between the second and third sections just like you're thinking. As far as the size of the gap you will need enough room to clear all your stock so twice the size is a good place to start. But before committing to putting it together I'd recommend testing the hinge every step of the way. I usually add 2 extra millimeters than I think I need as I'd rather have a hinge slightly too large than a hinge slightly too small.

Instead of taping the black and white strips to the board, would glue work ok?
@QrazyQuarian
@QrazyQuarian 5 жыл бұрын
Part of that is really to make it look nice, I think. The tape gives it borders that also protect the edges from frilling (is that even an applicable term for game boards?). Glue will keep it together, but I don't think that's the only aspect of it you have to worry about.

I've experimented some with this idea but not much as these projects are meant to be prototypes. I've tried lightly spraying with something like a clear coat or laquer. The finish wasn't that great afterward but it would seal the paper. I can't recommend it though
