Thanks Scott...altho I do have to be honest and say this hack wasn't from me 🤷♂️ It is a neat trick, especially for when you are starting out. I can remember I had a bucket of forms I had made using battens notched out at various thicknesses.....long time ago now 👴

That's a great idea. Would it work better if you used a baton that was 3 or 4mm shallower than the tiles, so that you always had a bed fractionally higher than the underside of the tile? Then it wouldn't matter if you lost the top bit of muck when you are scraping it level, and when you tap the tile down to get good contact with the muck you'd squeeze that tiny extra bit of muck out the sides.

Rather than use a bit of 20 mm tile as your scrape, use a bit of 10 mm timber as your scrape and your bed will be 10 mm above the last stone so you have 10 mm of sink bedding so you don't have to keep topping up after scraping the bed.

Only last week or so I was thinking it would be good to make something like this out of a bit of 20 by 40mm box section about 4ft long, and attaching a bit of 2ft flatbar on one side that could be adjusted up or down with wongnuts or finger screws depending on the depth of the slab being laid, bymy count it wouldn't cost much

Great tip thanks. How would you approach a section which is 2420mm long with 595mm tiles? It’s an L shape so the 2420mm section has to continue to a much wider section. Wondering whether to cut the last two runs into a 500 and a 120 effectively? Awkward to fill a 20mm gap?
