As I started to use the lathe to create parts I needed, I realized that having massive aluminum cylinders can be very handy... On top of that I have quite some scrap aluminum that I started to save for this purpose...
So the next thing to build: a propane gas aluminum melting foundry based on stuff I had laying around and left-overs of previous projects...

I have built 2 furnaces the oldest is a little over 20 years old two layers (5 inches thick) insulating brick 2400 on the outside next to the shell and 2600's on the inside. the third furnace is for aluminum only and is only one layer. I just wanted a train and that needed allot of iron. I haven't made many videos but the ones i have are epic (at least in my tiny world) LOL, my medium furnace holds a #16 and the tilter holds a #50 crucible Silicon carbide of course. those numbers are for aluminum with iron they hold about 40 and 200 pounds

Think the front lid handle, might have been better suited to being located on the opposite back side and using the body to safely latch it open, rather than on the front , simply because your going to expose an awful lot of hand wrist and arm to a fiercely hot open foundry !

Luckily I try to always wear long sleeves and welding gloves when manipulating the lid, but you have a point!

Same build tighter brick cuts, and a coat of high heat cement works amazing

When I was cutting the bricks, it was "free hand". I would use some kind of a sawing template next time...

@@ExtremeDIYinBelgium man my first forge was just home made refractory cement and it burned out in a couple uses. Half the fun is the tinkering to resolve little things.

yes indeed... and the other half of the fun is to build it with stuff you actually have laying around... buying all the top notch material and/or CNC-cutting it all and just assembling it, is not that challenging... ;o)

@@ExtremeDIYinBelgium for sure. As it is though do you know the temperature you're getting?

To be honest, I can only guess as I did not measure it: as the aluminum is actually melting and I can pour it, it is naturally at or more than 660 degrees Celsius or 1220 degrees Fahrenheit.
