Don't use cornstarch! Gesso is supposed to keep the paint from rotting through your canvas, especially when you paint with oil. A lot of bacteria will eat through the oil and sooner or later the fibers of the canvas. Using cornstarch means the bacteria will simply consume that as well.. and in a few years your paintings need to be send for restoration. You want to use gypsum, because its absorben, but doesn't get eaten by the bacteria and fungi that will eat through oil and such. Sure you can get away with talcum powder (Baby Powder is usually just talcum with added perfume), but gypsum is used for a reason. The PVA will not protect the canvas if you use cornstarch. Maybe for Acrylic painting you can use cornstarch, but i would advise against that! If you do oil or water colors.
@slippersmomma Жыл бұрын
Where can you get gypsum? I live near white sand dunes that are made up of gypsum sand. Very clean. Can that be used?
@IshanDeston Жыл бұрын
@@slippersmomma You can get gypsum in any hardware store where its called Plaster of Paris. Gypsum is also sold as hardening agent for Portlant Cement, so your local hardware store should definitely have gypsum in some form or another. Just ask one of the clerks, they should be able to point you to it. Drywall compound should also work, as Drywall is usually made from Gypsum Boards. Gypsum is formed in marine environments where water evaporates, so it is possible your sand would work, but i never tried that and i don't know if additional processing steps would be needed. I would imagine that it would still need to be ground down? I dunno, about that. Oh and any Art store probably can also hook you up with gypsum.

@yolandagofigure Жыл бұрын
What about adding salt to it??
@IshanDeston Жыл бұрын
@@yolandagofigure Never tried that. Talcum is readily available via Baby Powder and or from the Hardware store. Don't see the reason to risk it with salt. But you would have to really dissolve it in the liquid. which is probably problematic.

Nice recipe. I don't do art painting, but I will give this a go for finishing objects of porous materials. I think I would be a little hesitant to use corn starch just because it's organic and could increase the likelihood of microorganisms breaking down the material over time. Starch is chemically one step away from being sugar, so with moisture it's going to be potential food for a lot of stuff. If the powder is mainly to dial in the consistency then might I suggest chalk? Maybe it's not a common household item, but it's cheap and has been used in paints throughout history for it's pigment and good adhesion properties, so I imagine it would fit in well in this composition.

what is the difference between Gesso and Mod Podge.? Thanks for all your awesome advice!!!!
@OurUpcycledLife2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Mod Podge Vs Gesso: Differences and Similarities One of the main differences between gesso and Mod Podge is the fact that one is a primer intended to be used as a layer of smoothness and strength for a surface, while the other is an adhesive that also doubles as a sealer for your craft projects.
