How many times did you coat it also did you do it right away after the first coat ? And can you use chalk pens ?

Hi! I have 2 questions: Have you tried chalkboard marker? I'm curious to see how it would show. After several paint coats, does the surface feel smooth? Plywood is pretty rough. Was considering MDF.

Chalkboard markers showed really well on it! And yes, plywood is rough- I didn't mind it too much, but you could definitely sand it down a little bit before you paint, if you want it to be smoother!

That will be so cute!! How big are you making it? I've seen some signs like that just resting on easels at weddings... but if it's going to be big like for a backdrop, against a tree would be fine like you said or you could possibly drill two holes in the top corners and string some thick rope through it a hang it from a tree?

Hi! So we actually just nailed it to the wall. We tried using heavy duty command strips, but our wood was a little warped, so it didn't lie completely flat against the wall.

No I didn't- the chalk paint worked just fine without it, but I'm sure you could use a primer first if you wanted to! :) Thank you!!

Hi, do you remember which color you mixed the tintable chalkboard paint with? I went to Home Depot today and they said they can only mix the colors given on the paint can and the "moonstone" color listed was black in the picture. Is that what you mixed it with? Is the actual tint light or white in color so that when they mix it, it turns grey? Thank you.

Hi! If I remember correctly, the paint was white in color, but the workers at Home Depot let us pick any color we wanted to make the chalk paint... that is weird that when you went they wouldn't let you. They had us go to the wall with all the color strips and pick out a color. I could have chosen pink if I wanted to haha!

I know most hardware stores sell big sheets of white dry erase boards! So you can totally make one of those!

Lindsey, I also used plywood for my chalkboard diy but after applying the paint my board feels rough to the touch. Did yours feel the same? If so did it cause a problem when writing on the board with the chalk? Thank you in advance and love the video

Awh thanks so much! Yes, the board was a little rough in some areas, but it didn't really affect writing on it... if I could do it over, I probably would have lightly sanded the board before I painted it!

I think a frame is a great idea- and then on the back of the frame you can place pieces that will hold nails/screws and hang it that way!

I actually don’t have it anymore because we moved! But I actually used it quite a bit! I will say it didn’t erase as well as a real chalkboard, but I would just use a damp cloth and it worked well enough!

Lindsay Brooke yeah I figured it wouldn’t since it’s a composite material, I was planning on making one side of my room wall into a board like this but I might just combine a few pre made ones or even just make a big white board. I’m always erasing stuff and redoing it and combined with my laziness my wall would just turn into a big white blob in about a week. I believe the paint we got was around $10 from Home Depot- we had a ton leftover though, so you may be able to find a smaller container of it from a craft store for even cheaper!

Hmm I probably wouldn't! Unless you primed the wood to be weather resistant... but yeah, I would keep it inside!

Textured paint on a smooth surface, then clear coat to fill in the "holes" a bit and make them less rough. I have a chair on my porch that's metal and it's painted with multicolor textured paint. Randomly one day my kids drew on it with chalk and it was seriously better than any chalkboard, even expensive ones, that I've ever drawn on or erased. It erased perfectly, without seasoning. So I bought some and sprayed it on my metal board and let it dry. Then I wrote on it. The BOLDEST chalk line ever was left, but it wouldn't wipe off. So then I took another look at the chair and realized it was textured but much more smooth and realized it was clear coated and sealed, after being painted with textured paint. I am now in the process of finding out a way to make my metal board exactly like my outside chairs that are clearly painted with some kind of textured paint. Any time we draw on them it goes on perfect and erases without a trace left behind.

Yeah- we first tried with big command strips- which would probably work fine if the board wasn't so large and if it was completely flat... but our plywood had bent a little bit, so we just nailed it into the wall- we just put little nails in the corners and along the sides

So I got the paint from Home Depot, and there you can make the paint whatever color you want! I chose a dark grey- but you can choose whatever you want, which is really cool!
