If you want to be the coolest house on the Halloween block, you'll want to watch this video. We often got asked, "Where did you get that HUGE spider?! It looks so real?!" People were shocked when we said that we made it ourselves. Now you can make it too!
With this video we are revealing our decorating secrets so you too can enjoy the fun! It features the products we used to create the giant spider, some very interesting non-traditional webs, and the lighting we used to accentuate it all. How'd we do it? Watch & see!
Check out how the decorations held up after using them for another year!

I have been binge watching giant spider tutorials, and I have to say that yours is the most awesome spider I have seen yet. Very creepy looking. Thanks for sharing. Any chance we could get a complete tutorial on how to make the spider?? Unfortunately we don’t have a complete tutorial. The video was made after the fact; us not anticipating making it when we created the spider. There is more information in the description. There have also been several questions over the years with answers in the comments (things like the number of 45° and 90° joints). Thank you for your interest and we are glad that you love how the spider turned out. 🕷️

Did you weatherize the spider at all or was it ok with what you did?
@thelavenderlemon7509
@thelavenderlemon7509 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! We didn’t but used materials that withstand water anyway (trash bags, plastic eyes, PVC pipe etc.). Biggest challenge was wind and a few pieces of hair came off but that was all. We used spray glue & hot glue for all adhesive. We ended up tying a bit of the webbing material to the legs after a strong wind storm to anchor it a bit more but that was it.

My pool noodles don't go all the way around the legs. Do you fill the gap with foam or just turn the gap to the back where it isn't seen? I couldn't tell from the video.
@thelavenderlemon7509

Great observation! Ours didn’t either. We used black duck tape on the back to hold the noodle onto the pipe, but the pantyhose creates a skin as well as the hair disguises it.

@thelavenderlemon7509
@thelavenderlemon7509 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The materials naturally were water resistant (PVC pipe, trash bags, swim noodles etc.) so no worries there. Wind is more tricky...we did use a bit of the ground webbing and tied it to legs as an anchor. In years past when we’ve made spiders we pounded a wooden dowel into the grass and then threaded the PVC leg onto that as somewhat of a tent peg. That also helped. Didn’t need to do that this time though because of the webbing.

@thelavenderlemon7509
@thelavenderlemon7509 3 жыл бұрын
22” was the longest segment we did. We did set the body on an upside down storage bin to assemble it. You could also use a 5 gallon bucket. It helps for balance as you attach the legs then can drill the pieces for reuse while it’s being supported. We did glue the “knee & ankle” segments together with PVC glue, just not the hip joints so they could detach.

cdub99 Great!! We bought bundles of the PVC pipe that were cut into 5 foot segments from Lowe’s for easy transportation. The cut segments varied at each joint. Depends on how big you want the spider to be. You can vary them just be consistent with what you decide per segment (18”-22”). We did longest closest to the body, then shortest in the middle, then medium length for the end. Course the back legs we only did a solid pipe for the middle and end segments. It’s important for stabilization.

We also had to figure it out as we went along and many store runs so it took us longer than if we had the recipe if that makes sense.

We bought most of the spider supplies from the dollar store & hardware store. The webs were around $40 for a 10lb roll. All together decorations were around $300.

Wow!! Absolutely amazing 🙌🏼 I love how it turned out. I definitely want to try this. The lighting choices are both great but I feel the purple lighting is best. 🎃👻

Does anyone know the measurements of the pipes?
@thelavenderlemon7509
@thelavenderlemon7509 4 жыл бұрын
yeyoswflrr the legs varied from 18-22” per segment; 3 segments for each of the 8 legs...It doesn’t matter as much about which length you pick as long as you stay consistent for balance. We’ve made them before with all the same length for each of the 3 segments and we’ve also varied them (longest closest to the body, then shortest, then medium length). Just depends on how big and tall you wanna make your spider and if you want to add any variety.

That's awesome I love your creepy gigantic spider for Halloween 🎃 I absolutely love the purple 💜 lightening makes your spider 🕷 even more creeper for Halloween. Your gigantic spider almost reminds me of the creepy spider from Harry Potter. I bet your house was the most loved place to go trick or treating on Halloween night and everyone had to stop and check out your hard work. Always better to make your own decorations than buying them from the store plus they look 100 times better also they are one of a kind.

What’s the dimensions of the legs and base ?
@thelavenderlemon7509
@thelavenderlemon7509 4 жыл бұрын
We just eyeballed the dimensions of the base to what we thought looked good for size. Just consistent on the space in between the bars that extend to the hip joint. The leg sections themselves varied from 18 to 22 inches. That also doesn’t matter much on length as long as you’re consistent with each segment. We did longest first, then shortest, then medium length.

How exactly did you "feed" the abdomen onto the frame? Did you stick it through the bag only or is it threaded through the plastic-wrapped hula hoop base? Just feel like it wouldn't be secured with just a plastic bag holding it together...
@thelavenderlemon7509
@thelavenderlemon7509 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! We did just poke holes through the plastic and used the pvc poles to do it. We made sure that the hula hoops of the abdomen sat on the PVC frame so it would support the weight.
