* This video should be entitled " how to fit the shooter to his gun ". This fellow brings the gun to his shoulder and then brings his face down onto the comb of the stock in order to acquire his sight picture. He definitely is a clay target shooter. If a gun truly fits the shooter, when that stock is brought to the shoulder the comb of the stock should also be making contact with the shooters cheek, and the shooter should be seeing a correct sight picture. Try closing both eyes and shouldering the firearm, then open your eyes and see what type of relationship actually exist between what should be a correct sight picture and what you actually see. Using a straw should not be necessary, especially if the gun has a mid rib bead. Just keep in mind that the higher the eye is positioned over the barrel the higher the shot charge will print. A lot of trap shooters like to see a figure 8 made with their front bead on top of their mid rib bead. That way they can float that small clay target above their front bead. Since the target is rising the shot charge will be thrown high, at the known distance, leaving only the forward allowance to be figured out. Fitting a shotgun to a shooter takes in numerous physical measurements, it is not just throwing a gun to the shoulder, and then scrunching the face onto the comb of the stock in order to acquire the proper sight picture.

Hi Charles, you are correct, I am a trap shooter. All the points you mentioned apply. On the pattern plate my gun shoots 60/40 aprox and with a raising target I have the clay just above the end bead. Yes there is more to fitting a gun an I do mention this to get a professional gun fit. These are just starting points and simple aids and what works for some doesn't work for others. Taking clays to the next level means getting lessons and advice as well.

I have found out at the comb the the of a few tenths thicker like my gold letter citori makes all the difference in raising my line of sight down the ribbon. ON my pumps and semis have thinner combs and all I see is the back off the receiver I shoot almost twice as good. I had a see 36 years ago I tried everything with shimms it would not hit anything and the thee people I knew had it sold it for the same reason. It also wouldn't shoot aa or equivalent I sent it back to urbano Italy. I use my gti for everything I don't need the third sheel.

* I hope you see more than the back of the receiver. You should be able to see, at least, the front bead. Browning shotguns have an awful lot thickness at the comb, although the Citori comb is usually thinner. A wood rasp and some sand paper can do wonders to thin , and if necessary lower the comb area. Of course, a gunsmith can do the same, but I like to do it myself because then I can check the progress as I whittle away the excess wood. Fixing a comb that's to high or to thick is a fairly easy fix, just don't overdo it.
