Thank you so much!! I plan to do another video soon and will take note of this! Every project always has its challenges and learnings so hopefully mine can be yours too! Next looking into our master bath… it’s going to be a bold look so we’re still working on the full design to ensure it comes out well!

I have been doing a similar project. It is taking me forever. I have made mistakes and learned from them. It’s reassuring that others run into problems and/or make mistakes. Your project ended up looking great. I hope mine does as well.
@BlakeCreate

I’m glad I didn’t edit those mistakes out then! This took me a good couple of months to get it together so it definitely does take more time doing it yourself and of course if it’s one the first like mine was mistakes will happen! I’ve just learned from doing a few of these now that everything can be fixed! If you really goof it which I thought several times I did… I always thought, “well… I’m going to have to pay someone to fix this” but if you take your time and just remain patient it’ll turn out good! Just research each step you’re unsure of until you get it and it’ll work out!! Thanks for watching and commenting!! I’ll have more in the future but a bit tight on cash to take on the next one!

I came to realize today that I should probably remove the B&B cause it’s in a full bathroom and it’s preprimed MDF. IDK though. I was planning to use semi-gloss paint bc I already have the paint from several years ago. One place I just read that it could be used in a bathroom if painting with semi-gloss paint. Thankfully I only used Brad nails to secure it to the walls and no adhesive bc if I have to remove it, it won’t pull off the drywall paper like the mirror did. If I do replace it, I can reuse it in the hall where there is less chance of moisture. More research to do. Trouble is I had to rent a miter saw so if I start over will either need to rent one again or buy one. More $$$. But, I don’t want to complete all the caulking, puttying and painting and have to redo it in a few years. Sigh. The tub/shower in that particular bathroom however, is seldom used so probably unlikely to see moisture. I also live in Utah where it’s a dry climate. Thanks again for admitting your mistakes.

Thanks for the great video. You did a wonderful job. I’d prefer less edits and cutaways for unrelated graphics. I like longer shots so I can absorb what I’m looking at. I hear a lot of people say the big box stores will cut 4x8 sheets down to smaller sizes but every time I ask they tell me “their saw is down” or there’s no one to operate it. It’s delaying a project because I’m trying to make sure I have all the large items figured out so I only have to pay for one $75 delivery charge. Again, thanks for this how-to video. You’re a good craftsman and the end result shows that. I bet visitors love the update. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for your comment and for watching! I appreciate the tip on the cut-aways vs longer clips. In an effort to keep people’s attention by moving through the work quickly… I agree I probably made the clips a bit too short! I’m working on another project right now and will keep that in mind! For the places cutting wood… we 100% ran into this multiple times for this project! I finally made a point to call ahead multiple Home Depot’s nearby to make sure they had a working saw and that someone would be there who could operate it! I feel your pain!! Thank you again for commenting and watching!!

Beautiful result! Are all the spaces between boards the same, or did you have to adjust for wall widths? Thanks!
@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate 4 ай бұрын
Thank you so much!! We’ve been really happy with it also! So on the first wall you see where I did the measurement I did my best to be as precise as possible to the measurement “spacing”. I tried to follow that same spacing all the way around the bathroom but taped up what it would look like first and made some small adjustments where I thought it looked “off” Does that help?

Im not done witht he video yet, but the one thing i would say to do different is to seal mdf before attaching it because it theres ever a leak for some reason and water gets to the mdf somehow, it will expand greatly.

Good point! For this bathroom we should be fine with the paint we used as it’s a paint that is moisture and water resistant paint! The only way would be from behind the wall which at that point I think we’re going to have bigger issues :P Appreciate you for watching!!

you should put a funky peel and stick paper on the top portion to take it to the next level. so its peel and stick if you dont like it just peel it off no problem. just make sure its vinyl. if you get paper peel and stick it behaves just like regular paste wallpaper.
@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate Жыл бұрын
Love the idea! We almost did this! The only thing that stopped us was when we read that the wall would need to not have texture for any wall paper to look good :( Haha I about died skim coating half the wall. In my next video (in progress) I used 1/16” hardboard so might go back one day and add some of the new age peel & stick!

Such an informative video! 🎉I just bought my first home and wanted to save $ and do these DIY projects myself. Board and batten seems “simple” but 😅 my worst fear is drilling through a water pipe. Any tips on how to avoid?
@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate Жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new home!! Yes! This was literally me before doing the board and batten of thinking it was simple! It really wasn’t too bad, especially if you can find the pre-made boards (I couldn’t). So happy you liked the video!! I’m actually in the process of making another one and trying to include as much as I can in it so it might be beneficial too (similar work). If you have pictures of your house being built that’s a plus for seeing where piping is. Use a stud locator to find your studs (they will usually be 16” apart), anything in-between is suspect. I’ve also seen people use a magnet to find the nails in the studs. And lastly, drill slow and don’t push hard so if you do hit one, you don’t drill through it. Slow and steady and check every once and awhile!

Don't use screws.. make sure u get the right size brad nails for ur nail gun so they don't go through the drywall much.. bam no concerns over hitting pipes

The black is a duration Sherwin Williams Paint is called Tricorn and we got the Matte finish! Thanks so much! Our walls above the board and batten I believe is a greyish color called whiskers by PPG (but that color came with our house!)

@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate Жыл бұрын
Hi Diana! I think autocorrect may have changed your wording but I believe you’re asking about the Skim-coating? We sanded it down and at first didn’t prime it… this on top of paint issues and some rough patches (see later parts of video) led us through some issues .. BUT.. we primered it with Sherwin Williams premium wall and wood primer interior latex primer and then painted with a new paint Sherwin Williams emerald interior acrylic latex and had no issues! We’re you able to fix the issues? Let me know! I’d be 100% down to give some thoughts if needed! If I did this again I would do (see in video where I mention this before skim coating) use Panel board “Hard board wall panel” vs skim coating. It’s thin, smooth and cheap and easily paintable!

For the corners of the room did you have to boards against eachother ?
@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate Жыл бұрын
Hopefully I do a good job of explaining this! For the corners … I cut a board for one wall, the width of the wall exactly, and it went into the corners. For the boards on the walls adjacent to that first one, I cut them to the width of the wall less the thickness of that first board mentioned. So one board goes to the corners while the adjacent ones don’t and just butt up against that first one. Let me know if this makes sense… trying to describe a picture in my mind with words 😅

Im planning on doing this, so I found you right in time. One thing I always look for is to see if the KZbinr put the item's in drop-down box and you did, so I immediately subscribed. Great job. 👏 👏 👏 Edit: can you share what color you used both bottom and top?
@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate Жыл бұрын
Awesome!! Working on the next project already! I’ll be sure to include materials and links for this next one! The paint is a PPG paint that came with the house I believe called whiskers. The paint we did for the board and batten is called: Tricorn Black and we did it in a matte finish.

What paint you use at first that’s you was having problems with so I can avoid it’s
@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate 5 ай бұрын
Hi! So the first paint we used may have just been a fluke and bad luck b/c we’ve used that before and it never gave any issues! It was Sherwin Williams and their Duration level paint with matte finish, when we had the issue they upgraded us to their “Emerald” level paint to make it right and gave us the premium primer which is their highest level (more money) but I will say you’d probably be 100% fine with Duration or even lower if doing Sherwin Williams! Odds of bad paint are probably extremely rare unless doing really cheap paint

Just a little tip, don't use mdf in a bathroom or anywhere it can get too moist or use it for a base/skirting board as it obsorbs water and will break down in time
@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate 9 ай бұрын
So, maybe for a bathroom bathroom But this is only a toilet and sink so there’s no moisture build up like a room with a shower. The primer we used is a water proof sealant and also the paint we ended up using is also made to seal the MDF

Why did you do minus 1? I keep trying to get my numbers to work, but they’re just not adding up or making sense My wall is 63.825” wide

And I’m looking at 5-6 battens
@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate Жыл бұрын
Hey! So sorry for taking a bit to get back! We’ve been out of town! So you do the -1 because if you automatically place two of your battens “vertical boards” on the outside edges, the space between them will always be less than the number of vertical boards by 1. For your wall as an example: 63.825”, let’s say you want to try out 5 battens “vertical boards” on your wall (if you want more or less just change the batten vertical board” number) *Total wall width is 63.825” *Battens you want: (using 5 as an example) *Batten width (the width of the vertical boards): mine were 2” so I’ll use that, but use whatever width your battens have for yours. 1.) 2” batten width X 5 battens = 10” total width of your battens (if you put all those battens side by side for a visual) 2.) Your total wall width is 63.825”. we’ll take this and subtract out the width of your battens (your taking away the space they’re going to take up with this step) so this is 53.825” (or the space that won’t have battens on your wall “space between all battens”… but this isn’t helpful.. b/c that doesn’t tell us how far each one should be from the next….) 3.) to get that spacing between each, we want to know how far apart to spread them… so.. we take that total space that won’t have battens 53.825”, (if using 5 battens that are 2” wide), and take the battens (5 in this example) and subtracting 1 is 4. 4.) so 53.825 (total space on the wall without battens) divided by 4 = 13.4562” … which isn’t usually a practical ruler measurement, so we’ll get close (the eye won’t be able to tell), try spacing them 13.5” (1 ft 1 and a half inches) apart and see how they look. As you change the width of the battens (if they’re not 2” wide or changing the number of battens you may get nicer measuring tape friendly numbers) At the end of the day, the math will get you close and I’d tape it with painters tape to see if you like the spacing! Please let me know if this helps or if you want more details!

@BlakeCreate
@BlakeCreate Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you so much!! We’re so happy it turned out so good also! My wife actually had the same concern since black does typically make rooms look smaller, but it surprisingly feels larger! I think doing half the wall like we did draws your eyes upwards from the design to the pictures to the ceiling making it feel like a really dynamic space. I wish I could describe better, but it 100% doesn’t feel smaller!
