I saw this video about 2 years ago and right away bought Jolen, but I didn’t use it until yesterday. The Jolen product had an expiration date of 2021, so it has been 2 years expired and I still went ahead and used it. Instead of using a butter knife, I used a watercolor brush… the skinniest one, just like the watercolor brush that came with that coloring set that we used during our elementary education. Anyway, I cut the bristles of the brush in half to make it more manageable… and it was much easier to handle. And the result was better than the boxed set. FYI, I have black brown hair and the highlights were honey in color… light but soft. I am so pleased. Thank you so much for your video. Oh, I waited for an hour before I rinsed my hair because my hair is coarse and thick 😊

I did a patch test and loved the result so I did my ash blonde roots...but just the top hair...not underneath. Trying to get out of the all-over bleaching jobs at the salon...tired of them. Just wanted to soften my top roots so they don’t look so stark. This stuff works fabulously. Who knew! I absolutely love the result! No orange whatsoever! Just a lovely golden blonde color...very natural looking. Only needed to leave it on for 10 minutes! I’m done with expensive and inconvenient salon appointments for good!!!! Done with walking around with long stark roots in between salon sessions too. Wow! THANK YOU so much Skip2mylou! You’re the best to share this wonderful solution, with us ladies. ♥️

I tried this last night with a regular old highlighting kit that comes with a cap. Parted my hair and even did the sides around my face. Used a mirror to do the back. The knife works better than a toothbrush, fork, the brushes that come with the kits, etc. It came out gorgeous. I look like a sun goddess.(okay, an ugly sun goddess) Brilliant idea! This is crazy. It's cheap, takes only 20 min & looks better than the expensive, time-consuming foil highlights my hairdresser does. My hair is brownish so it looks diff. on me, but it's gorgeous, not brassy at all. It costs around $8 on Amazon. The only thing I changed was using a plastic knife :)) Thank you for posting. Good video ! Great place to start for those who wanna give it a go at home (and fall in love with having some control over thier hair and wallet) I always lift/color my hair at home - although I grew up in a salon and then worked in one as a young adult I have had plenty trial and error. I am sure that you're not a fool and you know your hair. However, to my knowledge you should never use anything metal while bleaching/coloring your hair. It can have a bad reaction- and, well - that's no fun. PSA Experiment with paint brushes, small sponge brushes or fun shaped and angled salon style color brushes. Depending on the amount of time I have, supplies, patience, regrowth, and desired result I freehand/balyage or cap highlight or put in a few foils in the face framing and crown area. You can freehand paint bleach but consider the following things below : Bleach expands (think foamy) overtime after you mix it. Watch out for any bleeding or transfer of the bleach onto unwanted areas. Otherwise you could end up looking like a spotted leopard and not a cute one either. Wella has a great clay consistency balyage bleach - but I do not recommend it if you need more than 4 levels of lift. There are a few bleach tubs/packs by l'oreal that lift well and two by Ion, all at Sally's. . FYI. If your bleach dries out - it stops lifting. So depending upon your bleach brand, use 2 units of developer to 1 unit of bleach. You could go a bit over 2. Lift a bit more than you think you need, without surpassing the time recommended by the manufacturer. You can always tone it later. But, keep it as far away as possible from your scalp since your scalp gives off heat and this is what helps cause "hot roots" or abnormal lighter color spot just at the root area closest to the scalp. If this happens, tap your root area with a color a shade lighter or same as your natural or background color. Then tone. Do not do it opposite as you run the list of lifting your hot roots even further. If you are toning, obviously use the opposite color base to counteract orange/yellow. If you want your hair and highlights a bit brighter go with a 10-20 volume developer (but beware on your darker hair as it will lighten it a bit and it can bring out a bit of brass in darker shades since blonde toners (ex. Wella T18) actually do not have the right amount of violet or blue or green tones for darker hair that has pulled Brass. You will then be stuck with super ashy light highlights and brassy base undertones. If you want to try and avoid that situation and are okay with simply zapping the Brass in your highlights use a deposit only developer (wella also makes one, used for semi permanent color charm line) but keep an eye on it depending on the toner. I prefer to tone my root area with a semi permanent level 7-8 with ash or cool undertones then apply a T18 wella blonde toner or a semi permanent 10-11 with ash/cool tones. Hope this ridiculously long comment helps someone !

OMG thanks for posting this video tip. I did my hair this morning with my regular Garnier Nutrisse Multi-Lights Highlighting Kit because it's very thick no cap needed, and it worked great!!!!! It took me a couple tries to figure out how to get the knife blade coated correctly. After that it was a breeze. And my hair came out looking great. NO MORE chunky streaks. Thank you so much for your video. Jolen costs so much less than other kits and works at least as well. I used a dollar store toothbrush, the tail end of it to touch up roots, and ten minutes later the brush end of it to pull the cream from the roots to the ends to create brighter highlights. It worked perfect. I never would have thought to try this if I hadn't seen your video. Thanks again.

This fine. I am a master colorist and I thought I should leave a quick Warning: This is Not something that will work on just any shade of hair. This would only lift one-two shades at best and a natural blonde color, if your lucky maybe some with darker blonde. Still, the color would lean to a more gold or brassy tone. Definitely not what you want to use when trying to achieve more of a bright platinum or creamy beige tone. Anyone with med- darker hair would definitely find themselves with more a red, orange, yellow/gold or brassy tone.

I now have a pixie cut and I just tried on a part of my head which could be hidden if it did not turn out for some reason....WELL, IT DID WORK for me and looks great. My hair is golden blonde with highlights, and this worked really well. I will let my hair get a bit dirty again and do the rest of my head. I used a plastic knife, even though you had no problems, Lou, I noticed that the little stirring paddle is plastic...so I went with plastic and left it on for about 15 minutes--then washed my hair in the shower. This could not have been easier and I keep going back to my mirror to check it out. This is great and the color is soft and my hair shines so it did not burn it. Many thanks for a great tip. Jolen cost me $5.69 in CVS today and with a $3.00 off coupon--$2.69! My hair dresser wanted to charge me $80.00 to highlight a pixie :-(.

Thank you so much for you video. I have added these highlights using the facial bleach. It is so non damaging and economical. Used to streak my hair with a cap with a lot stronger bleach, or pay a lot for foils at a hairdresser. Not using dark dyes anymore for the silvers coming through due to reports of dangers of that, will just use this for highlights all over now. Beauty of it is you can redo highlights in various stages to lift them to the required level, over a period of time, and section hair to do underl ayers and sides if you do you your hair up.

It definitely worked well around my face on the little baby hairs:).

@@jennyluna632 Hi, how coarse is your hair and what colour you use usually? I am asking because that timing m ight be suitable for mid-coarse hair and/or dark blond or light brown hair (same as my hair).

Oh my gosh! I love you! Lol! You are so funny! I already color my own roots but I have not gotten up the courage to do my own highlights. The way you do your videos, well at least the 2 I just saw anyway, makes it so enjoyable to watch how to do your own hair. Thank you for sharing. I subscribed just because I wanted to keep watching more of your videos. Have a blessed day!😊

Agreed! My sis in law paid £60 last summer and still had half inch roots! (She's a bit timid so me an another sis had to drag her back to complain) ok, fair do- the salon fixed it for free, but hell! This aint bad at all!!!

I saw your updated version of dying your hair it's so funny I do it the same way but I use just for men beard and mustache color. When you streak it's perfectly your hair tends to look like a tigers stripes, if you do it sporadically throughout your roots it actually looks a little more natural. Love you Lou

*If you haven't seen the video of The Traveling Willburys singing Last Night...you gotta. Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, etc. All I could visualize was Petty saying "and she pulled out a knife" and he pulls out a butter knife. Lou, you had me laughing so hard, I forgot that my hair needing to be done, was suppose to be the point of watching the video. I watched some of your others, and I must say, you don't disappoint. Loved it.*

This is 40 years old, started in France I think. Instead of using a knife, I was taught to use a wide tooth comb, squeeze out the bleach/color on the comb "exclamation points" (start at the tip of the twine of the comb with a large amount, then taper off to a smaller amount on the twine), then drag the comb through the roots. Only worked for dark blonde hair as it's not precise enough and darker hair will show the imprecision. I like this because you can be more precise but it's still a fast way of doing it. Lifting up each strand and "painting" is very time consuming!

so the bowl, brush and developer you threw over your shoulder is the EXACT SAME THING THAT CAME IN YOUR DOLLAR STORE BLEACH KIT, ONLY SMALLER.what a dope.you don't have to apply with a brush, its there for mixing. you can apply with your freakin finger if you want. EXCELLENT tutorial for those who want the orange stripes in your hair like this guru has. good luck !
