Summer of 99' my father made us kids get up at 7AM and help him build his garage. I hated it. We were all exhausted at the end. I look back now and I'm couldn't be more proud that my family built it. We came together for a purpose and we get to set back and use enjoy. Family is important and it's important that we teach our children how to survive... Teach them how to create. Thanks for sharing the video. I'm a mom of two children. We are about to build an addition onto our home and I'll be the one this time that is rounding up the family (even my father). I hope my children will enjoy it.

No permits? Not good at all. If you get caught they will put a stop order on your job and a fine. They can hold you up after that for as long as they want. If you have a fire and you didn't get a permit the insurance will find out a way to get out of paying. If you have it built there inspector can make you tear it down. Ñ

For additions yes, get permits but stuff inside the house, like bathroom, basement, kitchen renovations you can get away with doing without permits.

I have a 14x40 shed I converted into a 1 bedroom home and I’m looking at adding 2 additional rooms and 1 bathroom to it so my daughter, her husband and their son can live with me as I am getting physically weak and older even at 46 yr old. But, I don’t want to cut the side of my building for a doorway because we would want our personal space. So it would more like a duplex setting. Eventually I will cut through the wall to add a door to make it accessible for both sides. The only thing is my building will set on 2 or 3 center blocks high foundation and the add on will be about 16 inches below my floor level. Then a wrap around porch added with the capabilities of steps and wheelchair accessible ramp on the porch in 2 locations. 1 for crossing among the porch from house to house and then the other for access to the yard. Then I want to build a tornado shelter just 50 feet away from the home with a concrete sidewalk for the wheelchair. But I want the shelter above ground with a dirt mound on top of it. This would be because of water collection and the fear of drowning if the shelter is completely underground. The shelter can also be used for canned food storage for emergencies. I have 5 years to get this all done. Then I want to build another 2 bed 1 bath for my son just in case later in life he will need it. I’m on 5.5 acres so I have plenty of room.

One mistake I saw you made was the orientation of the subfloor plywood sheets, the long axis should have been laid across the 2x framing joists and joints should have been staggered.

yeah, I made that mistake in my shop. You can tell when you walk on it. Overlapping joints helps with rigidity. I'll need to put a layer of ply over it to make it less flexible. Ill not make that mistake again.

Now I just signed the papers to purchase it and it can be built up to a two story on top of the kitchen area. It would add another 600 square feet. We'd add a full bathroom and a master bedroom. I came here mostly to see how you did the roof because mine slopes similar and the same direction.

Some simple math for a 14x14 addition on three 12" sonotube footings with no flares puts the load on the soil at around 3,300 psf, not including the concrete in the footings. That's high for a lot of states with loamy or silty soil. Did you get a soil test done that said 3,300 psf was ok? Just curious. We had to put the kybosh on a vacation home tear down because of poor soils.

I’m having a double wide with a custom extra large kitchen willed to me. In the meantime, they suggested I put an addition onto the home for my own separate living space. I need to add a bedroom and bathroom. I bought my childhood home about 2 years ago. The house is close to 100 years old and we only have 1 bathroom for 6 people so it gets tense sometimes😂but there’s no way to add on without having to walk through someone else’s bedroom. Might have to just turn the dining room into a bedroom but the 3rd bedroom is on the other side of the dining room so someone will have traffic through their room so the one can get to theirs🤦🏻‍♂️I guess we’ll have to compromise lol. I enjoyed watching your video. I was thinking of redoing some trim and smaller jobs around my house but I’m not a carpenter, but a steel worker, and came across your video in search of ideas. I will definitely subscribe as soon as I post this comment.

For anyone watching this, you don't need mono-tubes if your ground doesn't fall apart from being too sandy. You can just pour into the hole and mushroom it up top. It will actually be a stronger pier against frost. Mono-tubes create a slick wall and can be pushed up and down vs a rigid pier. However, like I said, if its sandy, then that's another story.
@senshockey88

sono-tube* is to protect against frost heave - the slickness keeps the ground from grabbing on to your concrete pier.

Thanks for the video. Great job, especially on the joining of the roofs. Loved seeing kids running around while their parents were building them a new playroom. What was the reason to build it on peers rather than concrete foundations like the rest of the house?

yes, i want to build an 8X16 additional bathroom/laundry/waterheater room. 2 bdr house has a 2 small bath...second bedroom needs its own bathroom with combo washer dryer and separate water heater(instant water heater to take less space)...I want electrikcheating through the floor. do I think I can do it? no. trying to learn. im in Birmingham, Alabama.

Great work! What was the insulation you used on your floors? Also, did you insulate below the subfloor as well? We live in four season climate and we are waiting to hear if they will let us use a deck style foundation vs a crawl space

Nice series, I only have this compilation. One question is there no insulation in the floor? And yes I think I can do it! This gives me confidence

I am totally amazed by how quickly and simply you can get a wooden house done. Question: how cold is it where this house stands (or any other wooden house)? Would they be any good for cooler climate?

In New hampshire we get cold snowy winters and as long as your insulation is good and your house doesn't leak like a broken faucet then you're all set. 😂

We are looking to build a roughly 21x25 addition to add two rooms and attach the house to the garage. Do you think the concrete posts you used would be a good idea for this project?

Question. So after time how are you going to keep the old home and the new from separating with the kind of footings you used. Wouldn't you want to do it how you would build a house?

I just want the ability to start a project like this and similar ones and to finish them. Id love to get training but living in ny, its hard 2 find training that dont cost and arm and a leg without wanting ur time but i have a full time job and no one works off hours anymore. Thats why i want to leave ny and try to learn the trades elsewhere
