I ordered a really expensive 1-1/4" pull up, chin up bar. But, it took too long to ship to my house. I was quickly losing fitness due to the horrible Coronavirus and the quarantine. Therefore, I went rogue, ran to home depot, spent $27, and built my own homemade cheap pullup bar in the basement, mounting the support for the bar using 2x6s. I stress tested it using the only means I knew necessary. This application would work in a garage, outside, or anywhere! I also go a few steps further making sure the pull up bar is truly next-level.
I made an outdoor pull up bar in my yard after this one, here is the link to that video:

Thanks for the tutorial. Am definitely going to build and install one to your "specs." The only suggestions I have is that I would have first GLUED and screwed the wood components together, and the spacer would have been much easier (and stronger) to add if it had been made from plywood. - the Tomster

I like it. Although, I used 4-5" bolts to secure the supports to the joists. A lot higher tensile strength than 2 1/2'" wood screws.

So well done. Please avoid self telescoping chin up bars like the plague, people. I almost killed myself on one as it collapsed while I was doing leg raises. This is the way to go .

Hi Mario! Here is the bar used: www.homedepot.com/p/Southland-1-in-x-48-in-Black-Steel-Pipe-585-480HC/100141320 Here are the threaded ends: www.homedepot.com/p/1-in-Black-Malleable-Iron-Threaded-Floor-Flange-521-605HN/100179931 These are commonly used in gas systems!

You sure like helmets.... j/k, cool idea. I am debating putting my pullup bar on my homemade power rack or putting it somewhere on it's own. I'm worried that I won't be able to get the thing level on my rack because I have to drill 4 big ass 1 1/4" holes in line to stick it through, and I have one of those speedbore max bits that self threads and tends to jerk the drill around really badly.. I managed to put together an entire home gym since this crap hit. Luckily I got on it like 3 days after the stay at home order in my state shut all the gyms down and I was able to get 800# of plates, oly bar and ez bar, adjustable dumbells and a bench press setup for like 500$ before the insane price gouging started. Everything else I have built myself like the power rack and platform, flat bench and a dip station. Only thing now is a stupid pullup bar lol. There are just not a lot of great places to mount the damn thing..
@EnigmaEngineering
@EnigmaEngineering 4 жыл бұрын
What are you trying to say??! Lol. Thanks for the comment Jay! If you measured the power rack a bunch of times and then used a sharp, heavy duty punch, followed by a pilot hole, do you think it would help you get better alignment on the 1-1/4" speedbore bit? Perhaps you could make a template that could help you too. I travel a lot, so I was already doing a lot of bodyweight stuff anyways when it hit, otherwise the whole lack of heavy weights would be killing me. Sounds like you have a solid home setup. I would love a dip station right about now. Let me know what your pull up solution is!

You tend to use lag bolts in floor/ ceiling joists. Wood screws under live load (ie bouncing) will tear at the wood fibre, where-as a bolt cinches Please don't use a circular saw to rip a board down like that. Kick back would have torn off your nuts - you're damned lucky. Kerf cut to desired depth then hammer and chisel out waste Like your stuff. Please don't ruin your life with some easily avoidable accident
@EnigmaEngineering
@EnigmaEngineering 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Check out our truss video - we got much more technical in terms of hardware + wood, to the point of calculating shear strength in bolts and friction created in the wooden joints as a function of bolt torque and bolt #. I should have used actual bolts with lock nuts, washers, etc., for the pullup bar - but I wanted to keep it simple. And yes, retaining nuts is always good - I should probably learn how to use a saw!

Why not just through bolt the flanges and put flat washers to fill the gap? I need to make one. People bought all the gym equipment
@EnigmaEngineering
@EnigmaEngineering 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I would do that if I were you, and use some nylon lock nuts. I would have done something similar, I just did not want to explain the length of bolts, specific size of drill bit, grades of steel, zinc vs galv vs stainless, etc.That is a good idea though!

You can save more by just drilling though the lumber instead of the fricking flanges. I don’t get why those are so expensive
@rmohindra84
@rmohindra84 2 жыл бұрын
Good idea. How would you secure the rod so it doesn't move or slide out?
@DominicVictoria
@DominicVictoria 2 жыл бұрын
You can use the wood as a flange too. Get another piece(as big as possible) of wood and drill through it. Then you screw/glue it on your hangers. Just put the direction of the grain horizontal so it doesn’t crack open and send you to the ground.
