This is absolutely not a backhoe. Backhoes barely have 180° swing at best. And they are mounted on the back of another tractor. This is barely an excavator. It does not have motorized tracks or wheels under it. But it is a nice homemade project for very small jobs.

Given that a sedan wheelbearing is working, an upgrade to a GM/chevy 2500/3500 front unit bearing would be great and solve your passthrough dilemma. It's WAY stronger - they use them on 6000lb/2700kg Ultra4 trucks with 40"/1meter tall tires at the King of the Hammers competition, has a 35mm pass through on the 33 spline version (the most common one), and are less than $100 new. I think it would be best to make the passthrough lines steel to fit as many as possible, or maybe just have 1 high pressure and 1 return, using control rods to actuate the valves. That would be very achievable through the 35mm hole, and being rods they can do both push and pull on 2 way valves.

@councilhousecreations8035

hey man yeah log splitter valves should work ok on a tractor so long as you can put the spool in constant pump on the tractor end it should work ok. so long as each valve is is connected in series so to speak. also the tractor has a pressure relief valve thats paired to the pump so all you'll need is metal, rams, hoses, valves, and cunning! if your gunna mount it on the 3 point linkage might be an idea to brace it to the pick up hitch and do away with the top link like they do on the hedge trimmers. iv braced a couple of hedge trimmers to the hitch in the past and they reach right out then till the rear tyre lifts! any questions fire away buddy cheers

This is great! A fellow engineer I was an apprentice with showed me this video after I started describing the excavator I'm planning to make. We built a hovercraft from scratch in our apprentice school for our final project, and it worked lol. Well, like I was saying, when I started describing my plans for an excavator, he laughed and pulled up your vid, then asked me "oh, you mean like this one? Looks like someone beat you to it buddy. Lol!" I was admittedly a bit speechless, a bit frustrated, and most importantly, a double bit motivated. I was surprised how you went about it pretty much the same way I had planned, honestly you and I probably both think it wouldn't make sense any other way. So, I guess the situation is now I got to get one up on you Brother. I'm a tiny bit overwhelmed with other projects currently, but I'm determined to make it happen. Cheers Brother, thanks for the motivation and very good job!

Question? I'm in the process of building a mini tow behind excavator/backhoe.. My project is going to be a tow behind and it isn't going to rotate 360 degrees... Just a basic and small tow behind backhoe with a boom that is about 6-7 ft in length and a bucket that is about 12"x7" inches... Something to dig water lines and ditches with. I purchased a 4 spool 11gpm valve control manifold and also a new 6.5HP Horizontal engine... I'm looking at a hydraulic pump from a log splitter. Which is 2 stage.. 2gpm on the first stage and 9gpm on stage 2 when bearing a load... I'm wondering if this pump is to big for my 6.5hp engine? If so, what would be a more correct size? Also, I'm looking at hydraulic pistons that are 1.5" bore.. 1" inch rod.. and 300psi working pressure... In your opinion, Are all of these items compatible for what i'm making? If no, Could you please give me some info on what size pistons and pump that I need to purchase for my project. Thanks.
@councilhousecreations8035
@councilhousecreations8035 3 жыл бұрын
Hey bud! The control valves are good you'll just have to make sure they are open circuit. As in oil will flow though them and back to the tank when the levers are in neutral position. For the pump i would go with a single stage gear pump for simplicity. To be honest bud i dont know what size pump to go for i just used what i had its about 4''x4''x4'' externally but if your not getting enough flow you could change the pulley size. I would use rams with a slightly bigger bore between 2'' to 2 1/2'' that'll make them a bit more powerful! Good luck man!!

I'll bet with as light as the entire unit is, you could just install a teflon swash plate for a fifth wheel trailer and a center pin? Then you could just drill a hole for a grease gun fitting to refresh the swash plate. Not to mention if it ever wears out, teflon swash plates are cheap.

I have another question that I'm hoping that you can help me with. I finally finished my mini excavator. The engine that I'm using is a 6.5hp with a 2 stage log splitter pump that is 11gpm.. It puts out 2gpm and when a load of great pressure is present, then the second stage kicks in and it puts out 9gpm. The reason that I chose this pump is because it was the only pump that I could find that would work with the low horsepower engine, or I was told. Anyways, My machine functions fine, but my cylinders are super fast. They are so fast that it makes it almost impossible to operate. What can I do to slow the speed of my cylinders? I've been looking at a "Hydraulic adjustable control valve". Similar to the one on your machine. Will this correct my problem? Any help is appreciated.. Thanks.
@oelle5698
@oelle5698 3 жыл бұрын
I had never really thought about log splitters before. But when I read your question I thought "What a nice idea. The log splitter runs fast until the cutting edge reaches the wood (second stage: high displacement, low pressure) and then works slowly with a lot of pressure for maximum force (first stage: low displacement, high pressure)". Of course, you only need first stage for the excavator. I think the simplest solution would be to install a throttle valve directly behind the pressure relief valve. If you close the throttle valve slowly, it will limit the flow, increase the pressure at the output of the pump and at a certain point switches it to first stage. When you have found the point, close it a little more for security reasons. Second solution: look here(www.jbj.co.uk/high-low-gear-pumps.html) and here(kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZWcc2uCeaZgg6c). This is your pump from the inside and how it works. If you remove the spring from the unloading valve, that should also have the desired effect. Both solutions involve a residual risk because the fast pump always runs. In the worst case scenario, the excavator could move unexpectedly fast and kill someone! Tanks for your question. It was interesting for me to learn something about log splitters, hydraulics and english language.
@councilhousecreations8035
@councilhousecreations8035 3 жыл бұрын
Well done mate that sounds awsome! Like matey said you could restrict the flow and force it into the second stage although that can be a bit dicey if a hose blows. Or you could try bigger bore rams or lower the rotational speed of the pump

As I understand, all weight and deforming forces from lever arms are projected through Ford mondeo single wheel bearing? Is it enough? How long you are using this machine? The arm will be easily around 500 kg and earthload also + 50 kg.

Nice unit the flywheel looks like it’s off an automatic trans has it held out ? If it’s a bit flimsy perhaps using a manual flywheel they heavier and thicker which might rectify things , other then that this looks like a professionally built unit , great job mate

Thanks bud seems to be holding out ok to be fair. Might add sum rollers to support the central bearing a bit but apart from that it seems ok. Dug out a 6x4x1 meter swiming pool with it!

Actually your slewing system is much like the big machinery companies do it but they set everything on a ring and the gear teeth are on the inside of the ring. By adding the system you talked about it would provide more rigidity to the digger and the more rollers the better or just have 2 rings with a high density polymer sheet 1 to 2 cm thick between them with a way to grease it from time to time.
