An individual brought me some old pillows and a purchased curtain of a heavy duck fabric. When I removed the old cover, it was not a formed or covered pillow, but rather filled with stuffing. I thought this may solve my concern of "luminess" in the pillow. I was trying to preserve it by using an old pillow case but it was difficult to stuff it into the pillow case without falling apart in the process. Thank you. Subscribing!!

Genius! I just sewed 6 pillows and stuffed them all with that evil poly stuffing. I sewed zippers in mine so I can just unzip and put in the batting. I was just starting 2 large bed decorative pillows for my sister for Christmas. This is great. Now if I could just stop all the prickly lint that comes off the stuffing. I itch so bad after all the work I have to take a shower.

Hi guys! Great video. I watched it before I ordered poly batting for a large floor pillow, and watched it again just now to make sure there's not a top and down to poly batting that I need to get right. On re-watching I had a question, though. I know about steam-a-seam and use it sometimes. But I didn't see you use it in this video; you sewed the insert fabric. Did I miss it?

@@ucsolutionsgivingmore It's funny because you say at the beginning of the video that viewers can do the project without sewing a stitch, and show the steam-a-seam; and then you sew the pillow entirely with the sewing machine. OK, good to know I didn't just miss it!

Hi, can you please create a video for creating cotton filled pillow as well. I particularly want to know some easy ways to fluff the cotton before filling it in
@ucsolutionsgivingmore
@ucsolutionsgivingmore 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Divya, unfortunately we have had to put the videos on hold for a little while. The foam business takes up most of our time. The cotton we use comes in rolls about an inch thick divided by a piece of paper for upholstery. When it comes to filling it with a pillow or a cushion we just use the layers of it, we don’t fluff it up. Cotton can get into a big ball sometimes and become a mess. I hope this address is your concerns. In short the cotton we use you don’t fluff up you keep it flat in layers. Cheers, Paul

My big throw pillows that came with the exact same fabric as the sectional are flattening and they don’t have a zipper, I should have checked before ordering it. There is rolled trim too. I’m worried that where I cut it will fray into a hole. I know how to hand sew well. I thought if I sew around really close over lapping the thread might work? I’m just not sure. Could you sew the batting to the liner??
@dawnaskey4975
@dawnaskey4975 3 жыл бұрын
It can be done but it can put a lot of fine fibers inside the sewing machine. It would be better to baste it by hand. The best option would be to use an appropriate spray adhesive- you would need to research that. All of those things are unnecessary. If you don't want it to shift ( which I am guessing is your goal, you can use the sewing version of clothespins to hold it together. (Wooden clothespins work only in some situations. I bought mine on Amazon to get a generic one including a generic price!)

Could we sew the batting and muslin together? I worry about the edges of the batting rolling up over time. I'm making a floor pillow for sitting so it will likely get more use than a regular tossing pillow.
@ucsolutionsgivingmore

Hi Amy, Excellent question! Yes, though, I would sandwich the batting between two muslin layers since you will not be able to see the batting directly to one layer of muslin. The reason being is the batting has a very loose weave and will snag on the feed-dog or the foot of the sewing machine. I hope this helps! Sounds like a really cool project you’re taking on.

When you 're cutting the fabric for the insert you said to cut it larger than the intended size. Do you mean the intended size of the insert?
@ucsolutionsgivingmore
@ucsolutionsgivingmore 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, Thanks for watching! Great question, yes you would want to cut out the inserts a half-inch bigger on all sides for seam allowance. Also, if you are making an insert for an 18” sq throw pillow you would want to make the insert 20” sq so that it fills out the throw pillow properly. I hope this helps!

you said "sew up the tab" to what though? you didn't really explain or show what you were doing when it came to the tab.. you showed where to see for the side seams which is pretty self explanatory, but this tab thing has me baffled!

Hi Mary, thanks for watching our video! Sorry for the confusion, the tab is referring to the extra fabric that we left to sew up the insert once it is filled.

@@ucsolutionsgivingmore , I think I must be an idiot, bc I still don't understand what the need for the "tab" was for. I'm making sweater pillows for my nieces out of a passed loved one's sweater. And they are custom shaped so I can't just go buy inserts. Hopefully the lightbulb will go off when I am sewing then up lol. If not they will forgive me since they know I can barely sew a button on and that knitting is my thing, lol Thank you for trying and your time! Our video was great, it's just me, truly.. I can cook you anything you want, put a power tool in my hand were good to go, and give a set of knitting needles in my hands and I can knitting you anything under the sun.. But sewing...completely above my head..i try, lol. Tc, stay safe, stay well!

@@ucsolutionsgivingmore thank you so much!!! that really helps out my mind at ease. Because of the situation our world is in, I've had to start making my own face masks.. smh..God is trying to punish me for not paying attention in home ec ( I know I'm showing my age I know! ). But I managed to find a beautiful lady who goes through each step showing how to make each stitch by hand. I have learned so much from her and am feeling much more confident, that I will be able to make at least a very functional insert if not a very nice looking one. The pillow itself I wasn't to concerned about as I an going to knit the front/back together and that is well within my comfort zone.

Thanks so much for this! I've been having a hard time sourcing polyfill. I can only find sponge chips and while it's nice and springy, it's quite lumpy. The batting would definitely smooth that all out. Great video. I like to see you guys working together. Looking forward to the next one. Stay well. Blessings...

+AfroTee Thanks for commenting to let us know. The shredded foam will always have that trouble. I love it because it's a great use of the pieces of left over foam from cushions. So yes the batting will help. It would be best to sew or staple the batting together so the foam does not work its way out. Fill it and close up the bottom, if you didn't already think of that yourself. Love that term sponge chips never heard of it, I want to remember that. Again thanks for watching and telling us. God bless. Cheers, Paul

Hi Velda, Great question! No, make the insert 1 -2 " larger then the fabric cover. I find 1.5" larger fits best not too much not too little. Thank you very much for your comment. If you haven't already please subscribe and share the videos,it helps us when you do. All the best, Paul

So, the insert is actually larger than the cover? I am doing this today so I want to make sure this isn't a typo. I would've thought that the insert would need to be smaller, ( but that's why I am turning to the professionals). So if I want a 16 inch square pillow, the covering fabric is an 18 inch square and the insert is 19 1/2 inches? Is that correct?
@ucsolutionsgivingmore
@ucsolutionsgivingmore 5 жыл бұрын
Hi There, Thanks for the question and for watching. Please share the videos it helps us a great deal. Now to the question. I will use FINISHED measurements okay. A 16 x16" throw pillow I would make this way. First the pillow cover (fabric) 16 x 16" (add 1" all around for seam allowance cut 17" SQ). The insert you are making I find making the insert 1 1/2" LARGER it makes for a fuller feel and look, with polyfill. Feather inserts I like 2" larger. I hope this addresses your question. All the best, Paul

Hello Crafty, YES! You can do just that, it will hold just fine. It can be a challenge to hold the tabs under the sewing foot. So use the iron on adhesive if you are having trouble holding under the sewing foot, what ever keeps it closed. Thank you for taking the time out to comment, please share the video, it does help us a lot when you do. Please comment again looking forward to it. All the best, Paul

Hello Crafty, YES! That should work just fine, however any of the poly fill or poly batting pushing through will melt on the iron. Sorry for the late reply, you most likely have moved on if so I sure it looks great. Thank you for your comment. Cheers, Paul
